prom dress

My DD would like a prom dress similar to the one in the pictures, but I really don't want to spend £300...

I've looked online at places like quiz, which have similar things, but she's a size 4 and they don't have anything in that size that's prom dress/ evening dress like.

I'd rather not order from shein or equivalent. Lots of the reviews for some of those online shops are bad if you want to return anything, and she's between a 2 and a 4 really, so I could see us having to send things back.

Any amazing ideas for places to look that sell evening dresses for smaller sizes?

She wants a laced up back (hoping that that means we can pull it in tight enough!) and likes the cowl front as that hides the fact that she's fairly flat chested.

Navy is her colour of choice or a dark purple or possibly a dark green (the champagne coloured photo is a photo of the back of the dress she likes).

I saw some people recommended Fonthill Road in London, so we may well explore there if all else fails.

Thanks for any help. I'm going round in circles trying to find her something she'd like that would fit.

Has she looked on Vinted and eBay?

Has she looked on Vinted and eBay?

We have started looking on there. Thank you.

It's tricky to find the colour, style and size that she'd like but I will keep looking as there’s more coming on each day.

Thanks again.

Have you looked at Club L? They don't have exactly that style, but they do a UK4 https://clubllondon.com/collections/prom-dresses?size=uk-4

sweetpickle2 · 17/02/2025 17:46

This is only in a 6, but has the lace up back so might be able to be pulled in? https://www.ever-pretty.co.uk/products/high-slit-cowl-neck-sequin-sleeveless-evening-dress-ees0043

In our area there are several charities that have prom dress events at this time if year, I would look there first. They're usually 2nd hand, or donated from shop stock.

Oooh! I'd not found them in my searches, but they look like they might have something.
Thank you!

We went to a sale showroom on Saturday and they were great prices, but unfortunately nothing that she liked in her size.

I'd not thought of looking for charity events, so I'm off to google that now.
Thank you!

OP my dd is also a size 4 & got her prom dress Oh Polly & it's v similar in style to the blue one in your photo

CrochetMadRosie · 17/02/2025 18:30

Thank you for taking the time to look for me.
That second one is a good shout and as you say, we could always get it altered to fit if we got something at a reasonable price.
I'd budgeted about £150 so that would cover an ebay/ vinted dress and alterations hopefully.
Thanks again.

I'd seen them on Amazon.
Was she pleased with the dress? There weren't a lot either reviews and some reviews weren't great so I wasn't sure... but as you say, easy to return with Amazon.
Thank you.

Thank you- I'm sure your daughter looked gorgeous in that!
Unfortunately, I don't think my daughter has the bust for that style,
but thank you.

@CrochetMadRosie look at the local secondary schools/colleges aswell as charity places. They sometimes organise prom sales too.

Yes, annoyingly we were away the weekend that her school had their prom sale...
That's a good idea though. Thank you!

Also have a look on Princess Polly too

BreakfastClub80 · 17/02/2025 19:28

Peppermayo is good value. I think it’s Australian so give a bit of time for delivery but DD had a dress from them and it was lined etc.

BrieHugger · 17/02/2025 19:33

JJ’s House will send you 4 dresses of your choice to try on for £18, so you can check sizes and styles, plus free fabric samples.

You’ll then get a discount code if you order from them, prices about £90 to £130 for the style you’re looking for. Great quality and service. Oh and it’s free for made to measure dresses (though you can’t return them).

rosyvalentine · 17/02/2025 19:50

My daughter likes Oh Polly for party dresses. I'm sure I saw some laced-up back ones there while browsing the site with her recently.

CrochetMadRosie · 17/02/2025 19:58

@HereComesEverybody Thank you. We'll have a look there.

@BreakfastClub80 I've not heard of that one so thank you. We'll have a look.

@BrieHugger DD found one on there that she liked. Good to know that you've had a good experience with them. We'd seen the offer to try them on. That seems like a really good idea. Thank you.

@rosyvalentine Thank you. Someone else recommended that site,
so good to have a few recommendations!

Lots of kids at my school get them from Boohoo or ASOS.
