white shirt/top to wear with skirt - not tucked in

Any recommendations? I've got a fairly high waist, and carry weight around my middle, so in the past I've gone for baggy everything. But a baggy shirt doesn't look right with a knee-length skirt - I've got corduroy skirts from White Stuff, Seasalt etc that I need tops to go with, when it gets too warm for jumpers and/or to wear with or without cardigans/jumpers for the in-between times maybe. I thought white might go with several of them.

I'm looking for something that isn't too short so that it shows any flesh if I lift my arms up, but not so long it covers half the skirt. Somewhat structured/fitted perhaps, so that it doesn't look like a shirt that was meant to be tucked in. And not really like a uniform shirt either! I had a white shirt/blouse from Seasalt that was OK but too big now that I've lost a little weight. I have a jersey shirt from White Stuff, but the fabric is quite thin and a bit see through/clingy, and always looks a bit limp/tired, so hoping for something that looks a little nicer. I also had a sleeveless top from White Stuff that was kind of gathered around the waist a bit, which disguised my middle slightly, but not warm enough for the winter.

any suggestions? I'm probably around a 14, could be anywhere from 12-16 though. thanks

This is good from Uniqlo:

Thank you, I'd forgotten about uniqlo. I don't live in London but might be visiting soon and have time to do some shopping, so will have a look and see about trying on. That looks like the right length for a skirt I think; the rayon maybe seems a bit uniform like but it's always hard to tell just online and so could be worth looking in person.

Pricey but might be what you're looking for (scroll down for the white ones)

Thank you! the Muji one is about the only one I might be able to afford, nice as the other ones are, so I'll add that to my London shopping plan...

The short Oxford shirt in Zara come in white as well as blue stripe. It's not meant for tucking in

Thank you. I think it may be exactly what OP ,and me, are looking for.

yes thanks, that could be great. We do have Zara here so I'll check how long it is, and what the revealing-flesh-situation is if I lift my arms!!

I need a white shirt and I like that Zara one, but how does anyone ever buy off the Zara site? I can't see it on a model.

ZaZathecat · 14/02/2025 08:34

On models here

Lentilweaver · 14/02/2025 09:01

thank you @ZaZathecat. Looks perfect. But it's not 100% cotton. Damn.

I have the same cord skirts from Seasalt @HoarFrostedWorldand have exactly your problem!

Waist-length shirts and tops should work in theory, but they tend to have a boxy, contemporary shape, which for me doesn't work with a classic skirt and makes me look a solid column. I need something that ends just below the waist, so you see the curve of it, which makes me look longer-waisted. Some kind of jersey-knit shirt perhaps. Still looking!

HoarFrostedWorld · 14/02/2025 09:11

Yes, that's exactly it, something slightly fitted, but not too long, and not too short!!

White stuff did a jersey knit shirt that would be kind of the right shape, but their fabric is so thin and looks tatty very quickly.

The Zara one looks too short now that I see it on the model, sadly.

Will keep looking!

Get a white camisole / vest to wear under your shirt. Extra warmth and no peepshow tummy when you have to put your arms up.

'zactly ! If it's cotton/linen, jersey soon loses its shape. If it's a double fronted/stretchy type jersey, it's too clingy (and sizing up doesn't work cos it alters the fit on the shoulders etc).

I'm toying with a waisted shirt, or waistcoat/top combo...

HoarFrostedWorld · 14/02/2025 18:08

thank you - the wrap style looks promising, especially as you can create a bit of a waist by wrapping more tightly

I have two Uniqlo ones and they are very flattering to someone like me with a middle aged belly

HoarFrostedWorld · 14/02/2025 18:24

that's good to know; do you know specifically which ones? from this season?

I have some wrap front ones from Hobbs but a few seasons ago (like 2019! Cornelia or Cordelia). I looked for an image online but couldn't find one. However, keep an eye out for this style as it is amazingly flattering- i bought several

Maybe search wrap shirts on vinted?

HoarFrostedWorld · 14/02/2025 20:37

thanks, that's a good idea

Or an M&S Cool Comfort slip. Loads of different colours and lengths and stop that gap between your top and skirt. I swear by them and they don't add bulk.

What about a fine knit something like this? www.marksandspencer.com/flared-sleeve-jumper/p/clp22597299?intid=mobile_app_pdp_share
