What in earth do you wear to horse racing? Help!

DH and I have been invited to a race meet with some older retired racing -type friends of his. I’ve absolutely no idea what to wear and am hoping there’s some more experienced MNetters out there. Summer racing I’ve done in a shallow and lightweight way! But this is hard core

what should I wear to fit in and be warm? Thank you!

What kind of racing is it? Flat, jump, point to point?

For jump or P2P:
Skinny pale jeans (white or pastel) with brown knee high boots, a jumper or shirt and tweed jacket.

Fairfax & Favor will give you some great ideas.

If it's flat racing then probably a nice winter dress with boots and a long coat

A big coat.

Warm clothes. Are you having a meal? Carvery restaurant or. A la carte? We go a lot and tend to be trackside and also at the show rings throughout the meet. So I wear a nice top, warm trousers, boots and a really big coat.

Where are you going? There’s a big difference between attending the Cheltenham Festival and a Friday night at Kempton!

You need to be warm and prepared for the weather as you will inevitably be outside most of the time.

It’s flat racing at Wincanton. Our hosts have a box!

I’ve got a nice long wool coat. But only suede work boots lol -

Images of Wincanton suggest a big coat (anorak) and scarf.
Looks not to be posh
Sadly it looks like jumps so you may have to look away

Wincanton is a jumps track, no Flat racing there!

If you have access to a box you’ll be able to duck in there if the weather is bleak, but I’d get your suede boots sprayed with waterproofing in advance!

If you’re going on 15th Feb it’s their big meeting of the year - Kingwell Hurdle Day - so expect to see some people dressing up a bit. Looking at the website it’s also their “dog friendly” fixture with some classes for dogs being staged, so be on the watch for muddy paws!

Wincanton is going to see a huge mix of attire, it really doesn't matter. I'd say go for smart/casual and warm. You likely won't be removing your coat unless you have hospitality booked. Wear layers!
