Help me find a coat?

I'm looking for a coat similar to this. I can't stand the shapeless boxy styles that are in right now, but nowhere seems to offer anything with a waist.

It doesn't have to be as flared as this (probably better if it isn't). I'd also like it a little longer. Ideally, no belt. Not a fan of belted coats.

I'm in the UK. I have looked on Etsy, but the styles I like all come from slightly dodgy looking overseas tailors, and I'm not prepared to through money away on them and risk it.

Any ideas please?

You could contact a tailor and ask if they could cut down a boxy coat into one with a waist. It shouldn't be a big job, you would also probably need the sleeves resetting.

Actually if you are handy with a sewing machine YouTube will take you through the process.

Google princess coats and see what comes up. Depends how much you want to spend.

Magpie50 · 09/02/2025 08:01

Vinted is worth a look too.
I got a gorgeous checked fitted coat from there this year.

Hobbs
Karen Millen
Joe Brown's

Loads of options if you google "fit and flare wool coat".

Thank you. I've looked at these but they're quite short. I'd like something longer to cover midi dresses (not that I wear them all the time, but...). Doesn't help that I'm 5' 7" so a shorter coat is almost up to my knees.

Gloverall, House of Bruar?

Monsoon- although only 30% wool

Monsoon

Or second hand. I have exactly the coat you're looking for in 100% wool but it's Laura Ashley from 1989 and I'm not parting with it.

Edited

@IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle I LOVE the Monsoon coat, but it's only available in a size 6. IF ONLY I'd looked there 3 or 4 months ago. 😢

@TheAmusedQuail
I don't know your size or budget but these might be of interest. They will be far better quality than a new coat at the same price.

What size are you? I have a dark green coat like that in size 14( unworn), it's beautiful but too tight on the top as I'm quite busty and I'm looking to sell it.

Pickled21 · 10/02/2025 23:35

This one from Next, seems to be a longer length.

I won't take offence if this is a bit much for you but The Seamstress of Bloomsbury make copies of original 1940s clothes. Their Elizabeth Coat certainly has a waist and might be the right length.

Not sure what your budget is but it's £170 and 100% wool. Black and navy also available.

I've never bought from them and I've not seen this in real life but I have seen one or two of their other things and they've looked pretty decent. My one quibble would be that's there's only a single button which will be due to World War 2 clothing restrictions. (It says it's a copy of a CC41 design.)

Thank you for posting this website, it's beautiful and has exactly the sort of blouse I've been looking everywhere for to wear with a full skirt

coat is beautiful too

Floisme · 05/12/2025 10:47

Thanks @Ragamuffin8 and @NotGalinda. I probably discovered them thanks to an S&B poster. Like I've said, I've never bought from them so, if anyone does, I'd love to hear a report.

I really want that coat now - can't afford it this winter but the beauty of a retailer like this is that they'll probably do it again next year.

Samini · 05/12/2025 18:38

hi, its size 14 but has no size label. It was my aunts, I remember her getting it when I was younger but she only wore it a handful of times. Double breasted when buttoned, velvet trim on collar and cuffs
