Been gifted £200 to spend on myself - would a Longchamp bag be a good choice?

I like the Le Piliage Original Large Shoulder Bag in fawn but
it is £120, a bit different from the usual £10 Primark bag I have used for years 😁- I keep talking myself out of it, then thinking it would be great for a carry-on airplane bag too

Any views appreciated!

Surely it depends on your personal taste ,how do you expect thousands of strangers to say as each & everyone of us likes different things & has never seen you .Why don't you stretch your money out a bit & look on QVC I've just bought a stunning leather hobo style bag from £220 down to £80 ..I.got it in 4 interest free £20 payments ..that way you could treat yourself with a new outfit all for the sa!e £200 ..60% of my stuff comes from charity shops ,I.have a Monsoon long embroidered velvet cost with the label still in £99 it cost me £4 !

My daughter got one when she started uni two years ago. It seems to be very robust but it certainly doesn't look like it should be that expensive

Icannotremembermyusername · 09/02/2025 15:57

I have the Black and Tan large and small and they are brilliant workhorses. I use them for work (I travel a lot) and they are light which I like. I hate lugging heavy bags. I have expensive leather bags Mulberry etc but always use these if I am taking laptop/paperwork to meetings/hand luggage/spare bag on holiday. My corners are going a bit but I will still use them. Great bags.

StrangewaysHereWeCome · 09/02/2025 20:35

IMO they feel a bit Emperor's New Clothes at first - all that money for a nylon bag. BUT they are super-practical. Very roomy, light (so if you are a handbag stuffer like me that's great), properly waterproof. I totally abuse mine and they last really well.

Bjorkdidit · 10/02/2025 03:31

I would worry that the bag would end up heavy when it's carrying a laptop and everything else we end up carting around.

I had to give up with shoulder bags as it was causing neck and shoulder pain so now use a backpack or cross body bag.

Yes. I had a brand new fawn one and accidentally rested it on a cafe table.. now has a grease stain that I can't get out. I think they do mark easily.
.. I thought it would be good for holidays - but quickly realised not with the amount of sun cream I use.

Grease stains will come out if you pile baking powder or bicarb or even talc on over night and it'll absorb it.

Brilliant bag but get a dark colour as the light ones mark so easily- I’ve had my black one for about 15 years it was well worth the money

Rosecoffeecup · 10/02/2025 06:00

They are great bags, I use a navy as my work bag and it looks good as new after taking a daily battering for 2 or 3 years. They fit absolutely everything inside and the handles are long enough to actually be used as a shoulder bag even when you have a massive coat on

Light colours will mark - I also have grey - but they clean up easily

Ceramiq · 10/02/2025 09:05

Nearly all handbags are rip offs. You are purchasing a brand/logo/instantly identifiable design and something to carry it around on.

notatinydancer · 10/02/2025 09:46

I use mine as carry on all the time. I have a divider.

GreenFingersHelp · 10/02/2025 16:18

FWIW the smallest shoulder bag version of that bag (with longer straps) is now very large.

I bought one around 15 years ago and it was the perfect size. It's now almost worn out and when I went to buy a new one I was shocked at the difference in size.
It looked like a suitcase on my shoulder.

I have a small version of the short handled grab bag which is fine but no good if you want to be hands-free.

Have a look at Vinted. Sometimes people sell brand new items for a fraction of the price.

I think the Le Pliage is a great option if that's what you've gravitated towards - a few mentions about them looking cheap or the material, but the quality speaks for itself. I've had mine for over 10 years and they have held up well and use them for travel/overnight all the time, with the bonus you can fold them up in your luggage if needed.

I think the ones which are tonal (like this, not brown leather) look particularly smart and really pull together an outfit. The large is quite big though and unless you carry a lot of stuff in the day, more of an overnight size. I get the other comments about a more 'designer' bag, but I think these bags are timeless and a reason they're still so popular.

I love longchamp bags - they are my go to daily bags and also used for travel. Rather than the regular pliage bags, I would definitely reccommend the Neo Pliage range. They are much more long lasting as they have thicker materiel. If they get a bit grubby, I throw mine in the washing machine and then hang up to dry and they come out looking as good as new.

aei22 · 11/02/2025 11:20

I’m sure it’s a nice bag, but it is a schoolgirl/student favourite atm.

Notcanceroops · 11/02/2025 12:42

Scams · 07/02/2025 16:29

I use a bag divider in my bigger bucket totes - like this.

I've got a few of the Loqi museum folding bags which are great, tiny fold so that they fit in any handbag.

Think you may have changed my life…can’t believe I don’t use these, transferring everything from one bag to another is flippin brilliant! Also going to get some small ones for my coat pockets YES!!!! Thank you
OP, go for it, the bag looks lovely

speakout · 11/02/2025 14:38

Do you need to spend it now OP?

Sounds like you may be settling for an item that you don't really want.

I would tuck it away in the bank, and in a few weeks or months you may fall in love with something you desire.
Then you have the money to buy it.
Seems silly to spend it on something that you don't have a desire for.

Maybe take a trip to the longchamp store in Bicester village they have quite a few different sizes and shapes to chose from at a discounted price

BeAzureRaven · 11/10/2025 03:26

"I really don't get the Longchamp love - they look like nylon. Would anyone spend that much on a bag that looked that way without the label? Or even be attracted to a bag that looked like that without the label?"
I only get clothing/bags WITHOUT a label, or with one that isn't obvious. I'm not a walking advertisement. The large Longchamps tote is a great lightweight bag that holds so much. I love mine. If it had a giant logo I wouldn't like it as much.
