Beautiful chinos

TronaldDump · 06/02/2025 15:29

I'm hankering for a pair of really beautiful, well cut chinos which I can wear to work events (or with a t shirt) all summer. Ideally cotton or mainly cotton, with plenty of structure around the waist but soft slouchy legs. I can't face going to the shops to try on and it's so hard to tell what's good online.

I have a pair of beautiful Free People ones which I loved for ages but they are synthetic and have started to stretch around the waist.

Does anyone have a pair of beautiful chinos they recommend? I'm happy to pay up to about £100 for the right ones.

Community Clothing?

Cos?

Massimo Dutti?

Oh thank you. I'd never heard of Community so will have a look at those, lots of options! The MD ones are a bit formal and Cos drive me mad not showing half the clothes on an actual model! Maybe I do need to go into a shop and try on. Great food for thought though thank you! Have you bought and loved any in particular from these?

It’s a while since I last bought trousers for myself at Cos - but they were always beautifully made, very flattering and amazingly long lasting. I’ve heard excellent reports of Community Clothing chinos from a few people. And MD just seems to be making really cool clothes for the price at the moment.

I’m afraid my very best chinos ever came from Raey @ Matches. Thick, heavy cotton, slouchy, oversized, go with everything, make me feel I’m setting off on an epic adventure whenever I wear them. Really wish I’d bought more …

If you could stretch your budget a little, I wonder if you’d like

Eat Dust Clothing

They have a sale on at the moment. See what you think.

Are chinos ever something that could be described as beautiful?
Functional, well made, practical maybe. But beautiful?

TronaldDump · 07/02/2025 21:18

Thanks @Bailiwitch - those Eat Dust ones are lovely but probably out of budget. I've got a Cos nearby so will go and do some try ons.

@crankytoes you've got me thinking about the subjective nature of beauty and how we apply it to clothes. What makes a dress beautiful? Can any trousers be beautiful? Is a skirt able to be beautiful? Can a blouse be beautiful but not a shirt maybe? Does functionality preclude beauty? Thanks for the philosophical input!

Agree with @Bailiwitch my Raey chinos are 'chefs kiss

They do come up on Vinted sometimes.

SmokeRingsOfMyMind · 07/02/2025 22:28

Arket often do good chinos - worth trying on (as with Cos) as the cuts vary.

Nitgel · 07/02/2025 22:30

I have some from jigsaw but last seasons don't seem as soft as the previous years. I'm too questing the ultimate chino.

SmokeRingsOfMyMind · 07/02/2025 22:31

YMC also do lovely trousers but over budget - worth trying on in person and then stalking on Vinted.

Floisme · 08/02/2025 07:04

The Community Clothing combat trousers are possibly my favourite casual trousers. They're a wider leg than their chinos but not ridiculously wide, slouchy fit, deep front pockets, made in Blackburn and all round great quality. They're a bit over your budget but, if you check their 'Odds n' Ends' page they're selling off the remainder of a discontinued colour - putty - at £89. (I tried them and the colour wasn't right but they're otherwise the same.)

Floisme · 08/02/2025 07:05

And I agree with you op that well made trousers can be beautiful. They're a feat of engineering.

Rshard · 08/02/2025 09:38

I have some reiko chinos which I wear casually and for work. I wear them at least once and week and have had them for 5 years, look as good as new.

AlertCat · 11/02/2025 20:29

I got a pair of Alexa in the sale at Lucy and Yak. They’re elastic at the waist but they have some pleats at the front too so they look quite tailored when your top hides the elastic. I’m pleased with mine- and they are so comfy!!

TronaldDump · 12/02/2025 16:49

Just to update, despite all the really great advice I got on here I was tempted by a couple of pairs from Hush in the sale. I got the

Hush Ali chinos

Hush Lya chinos

With the intention of returning one pair but they arrived today and I absolutely love them both! Really heavy, soft cotton which falls beautifully, lovely fit with the pleats. I ordered a whole size down which was a bit scary to do but worked out just right (am usually a very bog standard 10).

I reckon I'll be living in them both for work and on the school run as soon as the weather feels less dire!

Thanks so much to everyone for the help though - it's brought up some new brands to me who look really interesting and I'll keep an eye on them.

Bargains!

Glad you’ve found what you want.

Apileofballyhoo · 12/02/2025 20:22

They are very close to what I'm after, they might be the ones. Long ago I had a pair of combats without the combat pockets and I've been searching for another pair for the past couple of years.

Apileofballyhoo · 12/02/2025 20:25

@TronaldDump they are fab and a proper bargain, think I'll be joining you

FaeryQueen · 12/02/2025 20:55

Nitgel · 11/02/2025 20:11

They are!

I had some black ones arrive today and have just ordered 2 more pairs in different colours.

The long are a smidgen shorter than I would like but I'm not exactly spoilt for choice with trousers so they'll do.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 12/02/2025 21:03

Lucy and Yak do a few styles that might suit
Addison and Alexa.
