Embassy function invitation and nothing to wear.

I have been invited to a function at a European Embassy. Short of dressing like a pile of Ferrero Rocher, what do I wear? The dress code is “smart” and the event is early evening so long frocks and cocktail dresses are out.

I presume they mean smart work clothes but I work in the arts and creative sector so my style is more Helena Bonham Carter than Helen Mirren. I need to buy something from scratch.

I can’t wear heels. I will have to wear this outfit all day and walk around for a good few hours before standing around at the function making small talk, so it needs to be comfy and foot friendly as well as smart.

I’m at a loss. Please help.

Jumpsuit? You can wear it with flats or boots.

what about wide leg black or navy trousers with a beautiful silk shirt in the same colour? That would work with flats.

Thanks. I had thought if something like that. Previous style and beauty threads also recommend these for apple shapes (me).

I’m not too great with wide legs as I am shirt and appley rectangular - even though wide legs are supposed to balance me out. I’m wearing bootcut jeans at the moment and they don’t suit me but as I work in a very casual place it does t matter too much.

Don't know what your budget is but I imagine there'll be quite a lot of Me & Em https://www.meandem.com/dresses You might also be able to hire one from somewhere like Hurr. Jasper COnran does a good line in dresses too.

I would dress as if I was going straight from work. For me that would be cigarette pants, loafers or Mary Janes silk shirt and long cardigan or coat depending on the weather
