What coat/jacket to wear with this dress

I have a wedding coming up and I have this dress. I don’t usually wear dresses and struggle with accessorising them. It is a winter wedding and will need something warm for travelling between the church and the venue. What sort of coat/jacket/cover up of some kind would look best with this kind of dress?

Hmm … I wear dresses all the time and would struggle to find a use for that one at this time of year.

Is it really your very best choice for a winter wedding ceremony? You would need to cover at least half of it in order to be warm enough in church - and it’s a hard colour to coordinate with. And even at the reception, surely most people will be a bit more seasonally dressed? (People are still buying velvet trouser suits going into spring …)

My feeling is that if you’ll be wearing an outer layer for most of the time, you’re probably better off choosing something else.

Lighterlilly · 04/02/2025 08:46

I’m also not sure that dress is wedding appropriate to be honest. I don’t really care what folks wear but if I was at someone’s wedding I think I’d raise an eyebrow at that. It’s also hard to wear a jacket over, and look decent.

is it all you have?

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 04/02/2025 08:49

If you're determined to wear it, it's pointless trying to find anything which goes best with it. It's not a dress intended to be worn with anything over it so for getting to and from the church and sitting in the church, any smart winter coat and take it off at the reception.

Blarn · 04/02/2025 08:51

Either a smart wool coat longer than the skirt or a quite short peacoat. But as PPs have said, the dress would not look right under the coat. Unless the coat is purely practical for getting there and back and the wedding itself will be all indoors and everyone is going for a glam sort of look.

I also have this jumpsuit but don’t think it’s really wedding appropriate due to it being completely blackJumpsuit

I would lean into the mob wife look and go for a fabulous faux fur jacket. There are plenty in the sales.

madaboutpurple · 04/02/2025 11:19

I must admit for a winter wedding I would wear a dress with sleeves and save the blue dress for another occasion.

TheLongRider · 04/02/2025 11:19

For inside, I would accessorize with a faux fur wrap, gold or silver bangles, depending on what suits you and possibly elbow length gloves. Think Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's.

wipeywipe · 04/02/2025 11:21

i can't see the dresses

Or gangster wife. God don’t do this. 😂

If you’re petite have you looked at anything like this, @Secondtimemummyworries?

& Other Stories dress

It’s a bargain and would make excellent winter wedding wear.

I guess it depends whether you would prefer to spend money on the outer layer or the dress.

You can't be serious?! For a wedding???

ValentineValentineV · 04/02/2025 14:10

I think I’d choose a Chanelesque jacket to wear for parts of the wedding if it’s cold and a long wool coat over the top for travelling.

Huh what's wrong with it??

Op I'd probably be inclined to wear a wrap/scarf/pashmina type of thing. Accessories wise a simple silver or white necklace, bracelet with silver or white shoes and bag.

I was at a wedding last week. Most of the women either had long sleeved dresses and no jacket or were wearing blazers. It wasn't that cold tbh.

Survivingnotthriving24 · 04/02/2025 19:23

Please don't buy the recommended dress or either jacket, utterly hideous and neither wedding guest appropriate.

A smart winter wool coat in a similar shade to the blue dress or navy would be absolutely fine, make sure it's longer than the dress.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 04/02/2025 20:00

If you don't have a suitable coat you could get something like this coat over to go to and from the church and the reception. It doesn't "go" with the dresscas such but coats and dresses don't need to "go". If you fasten it when travelling between venues it'll look smart. Edit coat is out of stock.

So far as the dress, is the general vibe going to be that type of glam?

I disagree. While I like the jumpsuit and jacket it’s too much black for a wedding. Avoid white and black.

Secondtimemummyworries · 04/02/2025 21:04

there is no dress code or instructions as to whether the wedding is going to be extremely formal as such. My problem is I’m very short so flowy dresses are a no go as I look like I’m drowning when I wear them. It’s a relatively young persons wedding in terms of the brides 24 and the majority of her friends who are attending are in their early twenties not that that really makes a difference. My friend is wearing something similar but satan material and deep neckline instead of off the shoulder

It's a fine dress. There will be a flesh tax and you will be cold. Try to wear a nice thick bra.

Newmeagain · 04/02/2025 22:12

I like the idea of a faux fur coat - will keep you warm!

Me too - I hate all the dresses linked though, sorry OP. They don’t strike me as fashionable at all. Could you rent a lovely reformation dress? https://byrotation.com/designers/reformation?srsltid=AfmBOoqg40vVHduPB0jhbQD8GLxcoIY5BiAhbFAXC9fOBVtnkuA72NHb
