What coat/jacket to wear with this dress

I have a wedding coming up and I have this dress. I don’t usually wear dresses and struggle with accessorising them. It is a winter wedding and will need something warm for travelling between the church and the venue. What sort of coat/jacket/cover up of some kind would look best with this kind of dress?

If that's the dress you want to wear then lean into it and go fur coat longer than the hem of the dress, or cropped fur. Leave the elbow length gloves out of it, keep the rest low key.

Good advice. I'd go for the longer length - easier and warmer.

Can Bardot sleeves be pulled up if the rest of the guests aren't so full on?

CombatBarbie · 04/02/2025 14:21

Huh what's wrong with it??

Op I'd probably be inclined to wear a wrap/scarf/pashmina type of thing. Accessories wise a simple silver or white necklace, bracelet with silver or white shoes and bag.

I was at a wedding last week. Most of the women either had long sleeved dresses and no jacket or were wearing blazers. It wasn't that cold tbh.

It looks like a cocktail dress - which is ok if that's what people are wearing, but a dress with sleeves, maybe more tailored/structured than this.

TizerorFizz · 05/02/2025 00:26

It’s a clubbing dress. Also body con. That’s why it looks a bit dated. I don’t see why shorter people cannot wear standard clothes. Just get a plain dress with sleeves and a faux fur jacket. Or a long sleeve dress and a coat of the same colour. Another option is a sequin skirt and satin top if it’s glam. Or a velvet trouser suit in berry colours. Just add heels and a glitzy bag.

Violetandgreen · 05/02/2025 00:49

I really like the black jumpsuit! A short fur jacket would look nice with the dress though.

bridgetreilly · 05/02/2025 02:55

I would also go for the jumpsuit and I love the idea of a faux fur jacket with it.

TerrorAustralis · 05/02/2025 04:32

Can you ask the bride what the dress code is and whether it’s OK to wear black? I think the black jumpsuit is the best of the three options you posted and probably the easiest to accessorise.

PoorPlanning · 05/02/2025 05:37

I have always worn a top and skirt to weddings. Usually a plain fitted top with a more glamorous/exciting skirt. And then heels.

I am short with big boobs, so need to be a bit more careful with what I wear. Choosing separates is so much easier.

chocopuffs · 05/02/2025 05:57

I can't see any of the OP's dresses (using the app) - does anyone know why that would be? I saw a PP commented too.

theressomanytinafeysicouldbe · 05/02/2025 07:57

The first dress I would look for a bolero type top to go with it, the second dress I would wear with a white blazer type jacket

Littlemisscapable · 05/02/2025 08:04

The dress is fine.. just wear a nice wool coat over it in black or navy.

Summerhillsquare · 05/02/2025 08:18

Well I like it op. And some of the suggestions here are hideously fashion-y and not stylish. A long wool coat or a white furry shrug bolero type thing would suit best.

Me neither

The blue dress is lovely and totally fine
for a wedding. Do you have a dress coat? teddy coat/faux fur or something like that?

Newposter180 · 05/02/2025 08:46

CapaciousHag · 04/02/2025 11:31

If you’re petite have you looked at anything like this, @Secondtimemummyworries?

& Other Stories dress

It’s a bargain and would make excellent winter wedding wear.

I guess it depends whether you would prefer to spend money on the outer layer or the dress.

The same person who picked the original blue dress is not going to pick that. I actually like it but definitely not for a wedding.

Sorry but this is like a checklist of dated early 2000s wedding attire - no one wears pashminas any more and white necklace and shoes all sounds a bit tacky?!

TizerorFizz · 05/02/2025 09:46

@Newposter180 It’s not unusual to take a pashmina if you think you might get cold in a venue. They just fold up in a bag. However the other accessories sound tacky. I agree.

It is easy to find a dress to wear to a wedding if you stick to day wear. Just about every high street or on line store does day wear for a more formal occasion. I would not buy a dress for £20 either. Also why a black jump suit? Why black? Does anyone buy these anymore either? My DDs are late 20s and would wear none of these clothes. DD1 goes to lots of weddings. A blazer is fine if it’s with matching trousers. Or over a sequinnned dress. That’s very on trend this winter. Over a tight clubbing dress - not really. A fluffy faux fur is better!

I’m going to step away from this thread now, I’ve managed to get a more appropriate dress. And to the poster who felt the need to highlight the price of the dress, I’m glad you can afford more than £20 for a dress in the current financial climate. However I cannot justify spending more than that on a dress I will literally never wear again

That's what I would spend too! That's all I can afford, got mocked previously about a pair of jeans for £18

Not getting at the OP, but I see this so often on here. Apart from a wedding dress why do people buy things they will only wear once? [even my "wedding dress" wasn't a one off wear]

Unless you really have no social life at all ever, to the point you never go out for a meal, never go on holiday, never go to a birthday party or another wedding or a christening or any other social event how is it possible to only wear something once ?

Other than actual ball gowns and black tie everything "dressy up" I've ever bought was bought with the intention of it being worn as much as possible in as many situations as possible.

The OP said she doesn't wear dresses, but you don't have to wear a dress. The (now almost famous) Tu velvet suit is still available. It's perfect for a winter wedding and just about any other "going out" event afterwards, particularly if split into separates.

Trousers suits are really tricky if you are short as the blazers end up the wrong length and the trousers will definitely be too long.

A lot of us really have no social life, yes. We're skint, working, being parents, just trying to survive. Read the OP and understand the brief. Ffs.

Goodluckanddontfitup · 05/02/2025 19:40

The original dress is lovely and will look great and in keeping at a modern wedding for 20 somethings, so ignore the negative comments. I wouldn’t overly worry about the coat, it will literally be for when you are outside moving between venues and you won’t be sat with it on during the reception, I’m sure the venue I’ll be heated! I’d just wear any smartish coat you have, maybe a long style with a belt, but it really won’t matter. Have a great time
