Met Opera (New York) dress code

Hi Mumsnetting opera lovers,

In March I am extremely excited to be going to the Met.

I know what it's like at ENO/ Covent Garden / Glyndebourne and just wondered where the Met sat on that scale?

What's the Met like? I know websites give indications but it matches their marketing agendas (exclusive or inclusive) rather than 'what's on the ground'. I'm doing fancy seats (it's probably a once in a lifetime trip so going all out) so what's it like with those folk, compared with at UK opera houses?

Hoping mumsnet is one of those amazing big communities that has a few people who knows how it compares!

Thank you thank you! xx

Ooh what a good question. Never been personally but loitering to hear if anyone has an answer from personal experience.

Reddit suggests that it tends fancier on Friday and Saturday night but that apart from that you can wear anything you want apart from fetish gear. There will be men in tuxedos and people dressed as Cher from Moonstruck in full length gowns and people in basketball shorts, with most people in the middle in smart work-appropriate gear. I'd wear my favourite glam dress personally but nothing bodycon or too short because you want to be comfy sitting down. Anything that makes you feel great will be fine, and if you do decide to go OTT then you'll make the other audience members' day.

Haha @UnstableEquilibrium you have a great way with words :)
I'm kind of keen to go as far towards Cher as I dare, but don't want to be turning any heads!

The posher the seats the more Cher-adjacent you can get away with. If you wore full red carpet up in the balcony then you probably would raise eyebrows.
