Will this date?

I love love love this coat and thinking to buy it. It’s quite expensive for me but I can justify it… at least I can as long as I’ll get use out of it for a few years.
This colour combo is trendy now. Will it be alright next year? And the one after that?

Will this date?

Honestly? It looks pretty dated already. Teddy was everywhere a couple of years ago and rarely seen now.
It also looks like a supermarket special, rather than a £250 buy.

thehorsesareallidiots · 31/01/2025 22:04

I think it will date, yes, but not, like, on a shellfish schedule. It is likely to be OK for a couple of years; I doubt you'd get 5+ out of it. Macro trends like the move towards utility rather than formal coats stick around for quite a while, if not forever.

I would have a concern that "teddy" fabric doesn't hold up to wear well, in my experience, and it would annoy me deeply to have forked out in the several-hundred range for something that went bobbly and tatty quite quickly.

LoafofSellotape · 31/01/2025 22:28

Already dated imo that's why it's on sale.

oprahwithlove · 31/01/2025 23:55

I would say that you can get that look if you like it for much less money. Keep your money for more of a classic.

Youtookmyhandle · 31/01/2025 23:59

It reminds me of a dressing gown.

BobbiJo · 01/02/2025 09:16

My first thought, please shoot me if you desire, it looks like the kind of coat an elderly person wears to do a news interview about how cold their house is..

TheLongRider · 01/02/2025 09:41

I think it will date, it's made of two main fabrics. If it was just a padded coat or a teddy coat it would be more timeless. The cocoon shape is pretty timeless too.

That is so wonderfully specific, yet completely true.

OP - my view is if I’m spending more than £200 on a coat, it’s got to be something classic and good quality. (This does usually mean boring)

So a wool coat in a colour that suits my colouring and works with the bulk of my wardrobe, and is plain enough to not be obviously from any one year.

Or a trench in a classic colour and cut. Or a practical wax jacket or rain coat for being out on a hike /dog walk.

fun colours, patterns and materials are for cheap things that I don’t mind retiring after 2 winters.

So this coat wouldn’t work for me. But my rules are just what works for me, and it does mean I rarely have a coat on that looks very on trend or fashionable.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 01/02/2025 09:58

Essentially if I’m spending more than £200 on a coat I expect it to last at least 5 years (or more) and I also expect it not to look really obviously 5 years+ in age.

thehorsesareallidiots · 01/02/2025 10:00

I subscribe to that coat philosophy also tbh - if I'm investing in a coat it's gonna be either a classic wool or a high-techical-spec parka for proper outdoor wear.. I'd go cheap for "fashionable" coats.

Wowser01 · 01/02/2025 10:02

I like it but I wouldn’t pay that. I’ve got a short Superdry jacket in that shade of green which I’ve had for a couple of years. I don’t think the colour will particularly date. Not sure about the fleece fabric.

lindyloo57 · 01/02/2025 14:01

@LoafofSellotape why do you say its dated just because its reduced, hobbs have wool coats reduced in the sale that they do every year. Surely its just to sell off winter stock to make way for summer clothing.

BobbyBiscuits · 01/02/2025 14:03

I just think it looks bad now. And I can't imagine thinking it'd look better in future. Sorry. It's a no from me. Looks like a cut and shut, like two cars glued together after a crash.
