Tips for Staying Polished After a Lifetime of Laziness?

I am looking for advice on how to maintain a more polished and put-together appearance after years of being lazy and kind of sloppy.

Ive spent most of my life putting comfort over style, cutting corners on grooming, and generally not putting much effort into my overall presentation. I keep telling myself I’m not in my 40s until I’m 41 and I’m 41 in a couple of weeks and Im at a point where I want to turn things around and develop better habits.

The problem is, every time I try, I end up slipping back into my old ways :( wearing wrinkled clothes, skipping skincare, and neglecting small but important details. I know consistency is key, but I struggle with staying motivated and making it feel natural rather than a chore.

For those of you who have made a similar transition (or have always been effortlessly polished), what are your best tips for:

Keeping up with personal grooming without it feeling like a hassle
Avoiding the ‘ll do it later’ trap when it comes to things like ironing, skincare, or hair care
Developing small daily habits that make a big difference

Id really appreciate any practical advice or routines that have worked for you.

Thanks in advance!

Some of you sound so organised. I got up this morning and started deep cleaning the bedroom and having a sort out. I thought if it’s cosy, clean and tydy il feel more organised and want to be neat myself. I now have stuff all over and feel overwhelmed lol. Hopefully it will be worth it when done

Doing my wardrobe took me 3 days - 3 whole days, not doing anything else - just that

My drawers, I did one drawer at a time

It took a long long time believe me because I had been pretty poorly for a good few years and I just wasn't dealing with anything - most of all my appearance , I was living and working in tracksuits, rarely bothered with hair cuts, face was a bloated peeling greasy mess, always had an excuse not to go anywhere, because I just didn't know where to start

The son decided he was getting married in Italy and I could no longer hide away, I had to make a start, Now its kind of second nature , I still have wee lapses but that lasts for just a day or two, then I notice my hairs a mess or my eyebrows are walking across ny forehead and my beard is strokeable . And because it is hard work, I don't ever want to slip back to where its an uphill battle again

Is it bleaching, @Ruraljapangirly ?

That was a revelation to me when I read about it on here! 😳

Oh wow! I thought being polished was about making an elegant impression on people. If someone is looking at my arse crack, I think elegance has rather gone out the window!

I have drawers in my bedside cupboard where I keep all of my potions. When I get into bed I put my airpods in and listen to an audio book or podcast while I cleanse, add serums, moisturise, oil my nails, use handcream etc. If I have everything to hand, I do it so this works for me.

I’ve just started doing that! Put all the daily bits in a box next to my bed and it’s made it so much easier!

Cant mind if it was here or on MSE , the famous anal bleaching thread back in 1995/96 ??? I have never laughed so hard and that was the night when I started thinking perhaps Tena Ladies deserved a second look :)

The easiest thing you can do to look so much better, whether you are wearing leggings and a t-shirt or a Chanel suit is to stand correctly. Straight back, shoulders ever so slightly back and imagine a right angle between your chin and neck.

Holy Jeeze I just came back onto this thread to find everyone thinking god knows only what about my bum crack 🤣🤣🤣.

Keep grooming stuff by the kettle. You’d be amazed how many weekly routines can be accomplished in the time it takes to
boil a cuppa.

Rip out tache
Exfoliate face
Shape eyebrows
Varnish nails/remove chips
Moisturise anything

My fave is sandpapering my feet with a sheet of rough grit from the diy shop. Somehow the indignity is lessened with a cuppa reward.

The sandpapering bit… kind of makes sense as it’s the same as a foot file, but why is my head saying it’s a bad idea? 😂

There must have been one more recently than that, because I didn't join MN until around 2010/2012?
