Self tan problems, can anyone advise!?

I used to use the Dove gradual tan. It could dry patchy to eventually moved over to the Bondi Sands regular, which felt like a much smoother application. I absolutely loved it and used it for over a year with constant success. It would gradually fade, but I was able to shower daily and get on with my life.

Since then, I have experienced several issues with it. It gives a good colour but has often formed into patches as soon as applied. I do everything that I am supposed to do, but over time it just won't work as well. If I get even slightly damp it comes off, as opposed to gradually fading like previously.
I am definitely buying the same product. Has it changed?

My issues are, after applying to clean and smooth skin with a mitt, I will notice that areas simply haven't been coated. I have definitely gone everywhere so I can't find a reason for this.
Often, it doesn't even work. So even after liberally applying and leaving for 8 hours (which is a colossal ball ache as it transfers EVERYWHERE) it still washes off to..... nothing

I am tempted to go back to the Dove, but would love some wise words or advice.
