Think I'm over loafers (for now), are mary jane ballerinas here to stay?

I've loved loafers for a long time, it's a style I'll always go back to, but I'm loving the ballerinas being back more than I imagined. Got a leopard mary jane pair from office with a softly squared toe (which makes them differ from last time round imho) and considering getting another couple of pairs in black and maybe another colour, burgundy? They are inexpensive and comfortable as far as these type of shoes go. I reckon they'll look good for another couple of years, what do you think?
I'm trying to pare my wardrobe back down to simpler styles without much fuss as i think it suits me better, ballerinas seem to fit the bill. I tend to prefer the mary jane ones so my toes aren't cramping up trying to keep them on.

Ballet flats are cute but so bad for your feet! I wish they did more pretty ones with supportive soles. I had some fabulous gold ones from Clarks years ago, I wore them to death. Wish I'd bought 2 pairs!

EllaPaella · 30/01/2025 19:03

I have those shoes @Justkoko
Yes the soles are think but they are perfectly comfortable and have worn well over the last 6 months that I've had them.

EllaPaella · 30/01/2025 19:03

*thin not think - sorry

CountryMouse22 · 30/01/2025 19:18

I have such big feet I daren't wear those. They would look like flippers!

TheChosenTwo · 30/01/2025 19:35

I haven’t worn ballet flats in 15 years and don’t think I ever will again!
I actually think the very thin flat sole and no support is probably very good for your feet and back etc overall but not if you’re used to any kind of cushioning or arch support in your other shoes normally, it’s too much of a shock to your system 😂
I don’t like loafers at all - I’m really lost for shoes at the moment. I live in trainers as I just can’t see anything that I’d wear and would
be practical for my day to day. I’ve actually struggled with shoes for a long time.

dragonfliesandbees · 30/01/2025 21:05

@Justkoko I really like those leopard print ones! How did you find the sizing? A couple of reviews mention they are narrow fitting but then someone else says they are big and she had to size down! I have wide feet so I'm not sure they would work for me.

catin8oots · 30/01/2025 21:16

How incredibly rude.

Still, I suppose it made you feel smug and superior for saying it.

No? How am I being smug or superior? This is style and beauty! I just really don't like those shoes!

We literally all post on these threads for opinions

I'm a standard 5 in just about anything and a 5 was spot on. 6 would have been too long and a 4 would have had my toes squishing into the square shape. Not wide fitting but very soft leather. Not a supportive shoe but I am v used to walking around barefoot at home.

I've got small feet for my height and non chunky shoes look weird on me, like my feet have been bound 😩 but I think ballerinas always look cute

Thanks I might give them a go. I'm not worried about lack of support, I'm also barefoot a lot of the time and mostly wear flat shoes. I run a mile from anything that claims to have arch support as it always seems to be in the wrong place and just digs into the sole of my foot!

Are they called Freckle Ice? You can still get them on Amazon or ebay

FabuIous · 31/01/2025 19:51

The fit flop Mary Jane and ballet pumps have a better sole, even though it doesn’t look very substantial.

I like loafers - I see the mary jane ballerina types as more for summer.

I love the square toes and less exposed top of the foot - to more traditional 'open' styles. Ordered a red pair earlier today from a post on here 😃
Just looked back at them given the comments above about not being great for your feet - they do have a small heel. ANd they've sold out of my size now.

Remind me of a beautiful green suede pair that I loved and wore for years and years until they were too shabby.

oprahwithlove · 31/01/2025 20:16

I have to say I hate Mary Janes - to me they look like shoes for people who have given up and are either old art teachers or into that academia stuff or both 😂 at least ballet flats have a little bit of chic.

OhMaria2 · 31/01/2025 20:25

I love loafers on everyone else just not on me. I think they ways look really smart.
Are Chelsea boots still a thing? I've got a great but unworn pair of Chelsea boots but don't know what to wear them with post skinny jeans!

I feel the same about ballet flats AND Mary Janes.

I have quite a small shoe size relative to my height (5'5", size 4) and have long legs. I always think I look a bit weird and unbalanced in anything non-chunky. I wore ballet flats around 2006 when they were really popular, but they were no good for my feet and I haven't worn them since. I don't particularly like the look of them either.

Sorry OP, no help at all. I really struggle with shoes that aren't boots.

I've never heard that term before! They look like this:

Jeezitneverends · 01/02/2025 06:44

I can’t wear ballet flat, they do weird things to the shape of my feet, but this is what I bought last week-can’t wait for the weather to get a bit warmer for themMary janes

Oh no!

BunnyLake · 01/02/2025 07:34

I can’t wear shoes that flat I always have to have a bit of sole as a buffer (Plantar F sufferer). I have recently fallen in love with loafers though.

I think they look quite nice.

The ‘Harriet’ though, omg they're awful. Some quite strange designs on that site.

DGPP · 01/02/2025 17:29

Not all ballet flats are that unsupportive. The R&B Charming range are expensive but have proper soles and don’t feel at all flimsy

Vanillazebra · 02/02/2025 05:04

Here are my offending shoes, I understand everyone has differing opinions.

I guess it depends if you care about fashion / style or just like the look of them anywya? They’re certainly not aesthetically pleasing but if they’re comfy and you like them then who cares.
