Universal red lipstick?

I need a new lipstick and one that has more colour in it. The few I have just seem so um, bland.
I am mid 50s fairish with hazel eyes.

Am wondering if there is a reddish lipstick that universally suits most women?

Revlon Fire and Ice or MAC Lady Danger - they seem to adapt to everyone's colouring and look different on everyone. Revlon for a more satin finish, MAC for a more matte look (although of course you can wear balm underneath)

I was told that Clinique black honey was a red that suits everyone, but it's not even red on me. That was the duty free makeup counter at Gatwick

Mac ruby woo or Russian red

I love a red lipstick. Huda is the best brand I’ve used! Lovely colour and doesn’t budge x

Dior 999 is a clear true red. Some of the others mentioned above lean blue-toned (Mac Ruby Woo) or orange ( Lady Danger).

Ouch! That was terrible advice. Black Honey isn't red on anyone. It has a lot of blue and yellow alongside the red pigment which make it more of a blackberry.

OP, you really need to try them out as I disagree with quite a lot of the suggestions you've had - which is not to say that pp are wrong, but that every shade will look slightly different on. Fire and Ice and Lady Danger both pull very coral on me (fair, neutral, blonde). For a true neutral red I like Lisa Eldridge True Velvet in Velvet Ribbon for a bullet and Violette_FR Petal Bouche in Amour Fou for a liquid.

BlackSwan · 26/01/2025 13:20

Agree with Lisa Eldrige Velvet Ribbon suggestion. It's very heavily pigmented.

It really depends on the undertones of your skin. What looks amazing on someone with cool undertones might look terrible on someone with warm undertones.

Take a look at your foundation, or concealer, or whatever you use on your skin. Is there any yellow in the shade? If so, you're probably warm toned. If it's leaning more pink, you're likely to be cool toned. (Of course it's different for darker skins, which I don't have much experience of, sorry)

The best way to work out what lip colour will suit you is trial and error - difficult when the makeup counters in shops are always so badly lit!

StormingNorman · 26/01/2025 14:03

YSL number one is a bright neutral red. Lots of the MACs pull quite warm or cool - Red Rock is fairly neutral though.

Have a look at Clinique They have a collection of reds with different undertones.. They often do nice gifts with purchases too!
As well as your skin tones, it depends on your natural lip colour.
Mine are mauve which is difficult!

Chanel rouge

Black honey isn't red. It suits most people but as a lip colour enhancing balm. Not a red

Mine too and they’re quite dark despite being fair skinned. I often need cool-toned lipsticks despite having warm skin. Difficult is one word!
