What would you chose?

I would go to Hatton Garden and walk around looking in all the jewellery shops, and see what caught my eye. Something suitable for wearing every day. Preferably not brand new (the pre-owned pieces hold their value better, and also are often more individual imo).

You could make a day of it together, have lunch out etc.

What a lovely challenge!

Some beautiful earrings here 😍

PandoraFrontier · 24/01/2025 09:33

It was a higher budget for me (£2000) but I got a beautiful pair of classic diamond earring studs. They’re 0.5ct each but you could get smaller stones for less.

they’re beautiful and I can wear them every day or out for something special.

PinkChaires · 24/01/2025 20:41

I would find a proper gold shop near you. They are usually owned by Pakistani or arab people. They will only go up in value and are a proper investment. Also you can haggle the price - especially if you pay cash. The earrings will be one of a kind

PinkChaires · 24/01/2025 20:42

Also, lots of the earrings they make have screw backs so they are literally screwed into the ear (dont worry they are easy to take out) my dd has a pair of these from 5 and they have never fallen out due to these

PinkChaires · 24/01/2025 20:45

For example this is one of the types of places im talking about near me www.instagram.com/shaandarjeweller?igsh=OGRtZjM5b2NobHZ5

NordicwithTeen · 24/01/2025 21:24

I'd get new tyres for my car and a pair of titanium ones on A.azon instead. Jewellery doesn't hold its value.

WhitegreeNcandle · 24/01/2025 21:30

Those emerald drops on the first page are beautiful.

I’ve 3 pieces of jewelry that were expensive. A diamond cross necklace, I wear a lot. But my diamond stud earrings are probably what I’d go for. I wear them a few times a week, either just with jeans and a t shirt or dressed up for a party. I love them, they make me feel special without being flashy. I have them insured with a pic so if I lost them I could replace.

BuntyBeaufort · 24/01/2025 22:54

I would never buy new, because it carries such a high premium. The mark up on jewellery is horrendous.

Try good quality antique shops. No VAT on secondhand goods, and vintage/antique styles are more unusual than modern stuff.

I got some gold, ruby and diamond earrings for just over £100 in an antique shop, so I'm sure you could find something stunning and unique for £1000. And it would be more fun than schlepping round Goldsmiths and Ernest Jones.

pimplebum · 23/01/2025 21:45

I’d be terrified of wearing such expensive earrings

You insure them.

veraswaistcoat · 24/01/2025 23:57

lopyrs · 24/01/2025 07:20

I think it would only make sense to spend that if you wear lots of other expensive jewellery and have a wardrobe that matches? Otherwise, it could be random to have a pricey pair of earrings.

But definitely don't buy for the sake of it, is there something else you'd love to mark the occasion? As you say, a watch?

I don't think this is the case at all....Perhaps maybe the style but not the cost. My everyday earrings are valued at 6000 but are simple solitaires.

Neither do tyres 😂

I’d go to accessorise and buy myself a couple of nice pairs for £30 and would spend £970 on my next holiday.

Came here to say the same.
But these type of responses are not welcomed here on S&B😂

OolongTeaDrinker · 24/01/2025 23:59

I used to lose earrings until I got these earring backs - highly recommend!

ThePuppyHasZoomiesAgain · 25/01/2025 00:00

I would want to go for a wander around different jewellers and look for a pair that I loved. Not from random internet recommendations.

StartupRepair · 25/01/2025 00:05

@puddleofpuppies I love Kalevala jewellery.
The antique emeralds are gorgeous. Agree that you will get something much more interesting and valuable as an antique.

Oceangrey · 25/01/2025 00:09

I did this with £2k I inherited - I was asked to used it for jewellery.
Antique gold and diamond drops from around 1880.
I wear them a lot as they go with everything but assume that people don't think they are real.

Anonmousse · 25/01/2025 00:11

You could definitely get a nice pair of diamond studs especially if you went for lab grown, but you might want something different from that. I lost the (pair of) studs my DH gave me as a wedding present , Blushbut ive replaced them with lab grown. I also have some tiny diamond set hoops which would likely be within budget.

I wouldn't recommend screw fittings, as more secure. They are very easy to cross thread if you're putting them on yourself - because you can't see if you're lining up the thread. And then they don't work securely

NoCheesesForTheMeeces · 25/01/2025 12:31

Perhaps I'm just not the stealth wealth type, but I don't really see the logic in spending that amount of money on diamond studs. For that amount of money I would want something unusual and striking, even if I wouldn't wear it every day

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 25/01/2025 13:50

Same here. I really like the antique emerald drops I linked to because they stand out and they'll be a one off.

Stealth wealth?? That’s a bit passive aggressive. People wearing diamond studs are not hiding anything… they’re just choosing to spend what is a significant amount of money on something classic and subtle you can wear daily and so get joy out of all the time.

Shmithecat2 · 25/01/2025 22:51

I have a pair of ceylon sapphire and platinum studs for just a little bit more than that. I love them and wear them almost daily.

🙄 It’s probably not the thread for the two of you then. It sounds like OP can have a holiday as well if she wants, but this thread is about spending the money on earrings as a nice gift from her husband.

Also, jewelry often doesn’t ‘holds its value’ - think he’s incorrect about that

It does if you buy in places which sells per weight + making charges and potentially sell in similar. My jewelry appreciated considerably in last 10 years. But I buy and sell abroad. I am not buying from overpriced designers or high street shops with 400% mark ups. Gold is a solid investment
