What would you chose?

If I had that kind of money to spend on jewellery I’d get something vintage or antique. The mark up on new gold / platinum jewellery and gemstones is huge. If you look at some antique stores which specialise in jewellery you’ll find some absolutely stunning pieces which would be worth far more than £1000 if bought new.

Having said that, I have a couple of pairs of earrings worth about £500 each and I never dare wear them in case I lose them!

JimHalpertsWife · 24/01/2025 07:37

I did suggest I’d prefer to get a watch instead but he said at that price point it’s just a waste of money. We’d be better spending more to get something that will hold its value

Doesn't sound much of a gift for you then if he is putting such daft perameters on it. Why specifically a pair of earrings when you want a watch.

Rina66 · 24/01/2025 07:44

Diamond studs, as near to a half a carat each as you can get so they bling! I've had mine for over 15 years and rarely take them out - only to clean them or if I want to wear a statement party pair.

Diamond studs … if it’s not solitaires but a cluster of smaller stones the budget might cover it

Or a sapphire/emerald if that’s more your style

What I really would do is spend £10 on lox brand earring backs, which secure them and are really worth it

PS- I spent similar to that (each) on 2 pairs about 15 years ago (when I was richer ! 😂)
If I’m not wearing one it’s the other so worth the money. A diamond cluster and a diamond hoop

Thank you so much for the Lox recommendation, I’d never heard of them and have just ordered some.

I have a pair of diamond studs and a sapphire pair, both given to me by my grandma, which I love but never wear as I’m too scared to lose them. Now I can! 😀

curious79 · 24/01/2025 07:58

I find the notion of looking to spend £1k then finding the earrings weird. Normally I buy the other way round - what do I like?
I have £9k chandelier earrings, £10k diamond stars through to £12 TK Maxx drops - love them all

Loopytiles · 24/01/2025 08:02

I dislike your H’s approach to giving you a gift: it’d be far nicer of him to let you choose what gift you’d like. I’d much prefer clothes. There are so many lovely, lower cost earrings.

Loopytiles · 24/01/2025 08:03

Also, jewelry often doesn’t ‘holds its value’ - think he’s incorrect about that

gettingolderbutcooler · 24/01/2025 08:06

I'd travel abroad for a week and choose a nice cheap pair there.

Yes, he's wrong about that, especially if the earrings are new rather than antique. But I see his point about a watch. For £1000 you could get a watch that looked very nice but would probably be an expensive "fashion" watch, rather than the timepiece equivalent of a £1k pair of earrings (if that makes sense!). Mind you, if that's what the OP would prefer then she should get the watch and wear it with pleasure!

Ygfrhj · 24/01/2025 08:11

New jewellery doesn't hold its value though, better to look at antique or second hand if that's important.

If you want a watch though get a watch. I bought a beautiful Longines for just under £1k.

MumonabikeE5 · 24/01/2025 08:12

I’d probably buy something else.

MumonabikeE5 · 24/01/2025 08:15

Hey having actually read your whole post, I would actually let your husband choose them. He clearly enjoys watching your wearing earrings and given that isn’t exactly a perversion I would be happy to give him this pleasure.

Fluff111 · 24/01/2025 08:18

Kiki McDonough, May not be suitable, or Mappin & Webb

hennybeans · 24/01/2025 08:22

I'd go to the jewellery section in Costco and get something big and sparkly and real. I know it sounds like a strange place to buy jewellery, but they have some beautiful things.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 24/01/2025 08:24

I'd buy a lovely pair of £100 ear rings and then put the £900 towards a holiday!

LoafofSellotape · 24/01/2025 08:30

DuesToTheDirt · 23/01/2025 21:54

Ha, so I'm not the only one who always loses one earring!

Only following to look at all the pretty earrings!

People who lose earrings- I always wear the little plastic stoppers on the back ,so with hooks they can't come out and with studs it's an extra stopper for security. I've had some pairs of earrings years and years.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 24/01/2025 08:40

I think if either give him the guide of “pearls /diamonds” and then leave it to him.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 24/01/2025 08:41

I wouldn't go for diamond studs. I think they're boring and generic. Pearl earings are lovely but you don't need to spend anything like £1,000.

If it were me I'd go for the vintage emerald ones I linked

SnidelyWhiplash · 24/01/2025 09:02

Diamond studs.

I have a pair that I’ve had for 20+ years and I wear them constantly. I mix them up with other earrings (several piercings) or wear them on their own.

Whatadayyyyyyy · 24/01/2025 09:05

I'd choose a really nice pair of diamond studs in white gold or platinum. Classic and timeless

I agree with the diamond studs.
Had mine in my ears for years ( I have 4 in one ear and 1 in the other they aren't huge or bling but beautiful) and they never come out except to clean.
They still make me smile every day! As an investment not so great but who cares if something still makes you happy years later.

Moveoverdarlin · 24/01/2025 09:16

Earrings are the one thing I couldn’t spend a lot of money on, even if I had billions. Every Christmas I ask for diamond studs (cubic zirconia, not real) and silver hoops. By February I’ve always lost one or both. Of the pair I got this year, I’ve just lost a back so far.

I can justify thousands on a watch hundreds maybe on a necklace but £50 would be my limit for earrings.
