Self-applied hair colour went wrong

I'm in my 40s and I have natural black hair. I dyed my hair brown to cover my grey hair yesterday. I knew a hair dye wouldn't work without using bleach on my thick hair so I bleached before I applied hair dye. It didn't turn out as what I wanted it to look like while it was meant to be brown entirely. It's so patchy 😅My husband says my hair looks ok and he actually likes it. But I think he says that because he doesn't want me to feel sad. I just don't want to embarrass myself in public places. I would be grateful if I can receive honest opinions as well as advice. I won't get offended. Thank you.

From that angle it looks absolutely fine to me. It looks intentional. Take a pic from behind to show us though.

@notafraidofthebigbadwolf I'm glad to hear that, thank you. The top and the bottom look lighter and the middle looks dark which I find very weird. I regretted I did go to a hair salon to do that just because I wanted to save money. I always cut my hair but dying hair is beyond difficult.

Hmm, it doesn't even really look visible from the back in that picture. My only concern would be if it was very unbalanced from left to right. Someone will come along who understands hair far better than me, but I would think that in a couple of weeks you can apply a semi-permanent home colour to even things out. Perhaps just wear your hair up a little more often right now to disguise the central part that doesn't have highlights?

@notafraidofthebigbadwolf Thank you for your another opinion. I'll try another colour in 2 weeks as you suggested 😉

You have very good hair, it looks lovely, shiny, thick and healthy. Yes perhaps colour slightly patchy but it is not the first thing you notice looking at your beautiful mane. Leave it be for a while and dye it again in around two weeks

@Pancakeorcrepe Awww thank you for your kind words. I will follow your advice of dying again in a couple of weeks 😊

Do you know about not exceeding the two shades lighter or darker rule?

For example if you hair was dark black aka number 1 on the scale in the image then you couldn't use a hair dye with a number bigger than 3 on the box.

I'm a 4/5, tried a near 8 and it was a patchy disaster. Covered over with a number 6 and it came out perfect. Your hair looks OK but if you're unhappy then if it were me I would probably try again with a darker shade.

@Pepsipepsi Oh I see. I didn't know about it. My hair is jet black so according to your explanation, my hair should be classed as number 1. I will definitely not use a number larger than 3 anymore. Thank you !

Disclaimer - I do not claim to be a hair expert. I'm sure you'll find plenty of advice about box dyeing dark hair online. Good luck! ☺️
