Black and navy together?

I've seen two references on here to this being a big no in just a few days. It's honestly not something that's ever bothered me.

Out of curiosity, is it something you care about or would notice on someone else?

This link is from 2017 so the clothing might be a bit outdated, but it would never occur to me that the colours weren't ok together.

Style rule breakers: how to wear navy and black together — Edits Styling

Recently I have been asked a lot by clients and friends for inspiration on how to style navy. What other colours can it be worn with and the ultimate style question is can you wear navy and black together? The answer is YES! It has long been consider...

I don't particularly care, but I do notice it and don't like it. So maybe that does mean I do care 🤔 I wouldn't choose to put it together.

Not for me but I can’t deny the people in those pics look great! Probably because they are very beautiful people to start with.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 19/01/2025 12:37

It's not a big no.
Tbh I don't think any colour with any other colour is a no.

BarbaraHoward · 19/01/2025 12:38

I think that's quite an old rule - my mum would never wear black and navy together. I tend to only do it if they're in the same item of clothing - for example I have a navy coat with black trim that I figure I can match with either. But I wouldn't wear a black top with navy trousers (typically).

Soonenough · 19/01/2025 12:38

Always heard never to mix those colours and I don't like the way it looks . Exception only for denim.

HundredMilesAnHour · 19/01/2025 12:39

Not a fan. Never been a fan. I do notice and I don’t think it looks good (not even in your link). Whilst some rules are made to be broken, black and navy isn’t one of them.

MrsMitford3 · 19/01/2025 12:40

I love black and navy together.

Think it looks clean and classic. What's not to like?

MayaPinion · 19/01/2025 12:41

They’re both base colours, so wearing them together makes it look as though you’ve accidentally put on the wrong top/trousers.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 19/01/2025 12:42

Same here.

HeffalumpsAndWoozlesAreHoneyRobbingTwats · 19/01/2025 12:42

I'd happy wear a decent navy top with a nice black jacket, or a pair of navy jeans with a black top (or the reverse). I don't get the 'rule'.

Agree. It"s a silly "rule".

Many brands at all levels make clothes which are black and blue.

Mixing black and navy clothing is a no.
but black shoes, coat & bag with navy clothes is fine

KnickerFolder · 19/01/2025 13:04

I think the “rule” is quite old fashioned, like “men in town never wear brown” 😂

But they are so similar that they “clash”, like red and pink, or white and cream. Clashing colours can look fantastic and stylish or they can look like you got dressed in the dark. I guess it depends how you put everything together.

Bargaintools · 19/01/2025 13:05

I think it looks bloody awful and you’ve dressed in the dark and made a mistake.

Timeforaglassofwine · 19/01/2025 13:05

It's fine, if I wear a navy jumper I wear black jeans, and visa versa.

MrsPeregrine · 19/01/2025 13:07

I think it looks a bit flat without some white in with it to be honest.

IndiraCharcoal · 19/01/2025 13:08

It can look great, only thing to avoid is that look where it appears you didn't realise your jacket is actually navy 😂Easier to do with a lighter navy.

BitOutOfPractice · 19/01/2025 13:09

I always follow this “rule” but I don’t know why!

Would you feel the same if it was all black instead of black and navy?

OP posts:
mynameiscalypso · 19/01/2025 13:11

I like it but I tend to wear a couple of pieces to make it look deliberate eg navy silk shirt, black skinny jeans tucked into navy boots and a black jacket over the top.

kdramaqueen · 19/01/2025 13:11

Don't the French regularly wear black and navy together? It looks fine to me and there are various shades of navy to choose from.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 19/01/2025 13:23

Would look good with gold jewellery but silver no

I'm frequently mystified by what's said on here about jewellery.

My wedding band is gold and my engagement ring is platinum so either I have all the bases covered off or I can't wear anything. Depending on your viewpoint😂

Hmm. Now thinking, the bracelets I wear every day, on the same hand as the mismatching rings, are gold, but my Apple Watch and band are black. Very confusing.

I'm wearing navy and black today, black trousers, navy top and a v dark navy cardigan, but they are all different textures. I mix cool toned neutrals, generally.
