What makes your face glowing?

After a difficult time I'm starting to feel alive again and I'd like to try out some beauty products. I was never into much, but being in my 40s I start to look my age.

Occasionally I see women of similar age and their skin is absolutely glowing. Possibly they wear light make up (I prefer not for daily use, I don't like the feeling have having another layer on my skin) or use something else. Appreciate there are no miracles.

My face looks dull, perhaps slightly sagging, no teint to it. Slight hormonal skin issues.

How do I manage to look more alive?

Even though I've a long list below I honestly believe that just taking care of yourself makes a massive difference.

Some of the most put together women I know have the least money, and some very rich women I know spend loads and don't look any better IMO.

I honestly believe if you took 2 girls at 16 and gave 1 a pot of vaseline, or Nivea, some SPF and the other a shit tonne of expensive stuff, and told them to moisturise and wear SPF every day, you could fast forward to 80 and you'd see no difference. In fact, the first would probably look better. I really do think that "looking after yourself" is an intention, and an act which is the benefit and not what you are using.

That said, I am keeping the Tret.

Yesterday I had the best skincare chat with someone and I realised all the money I am spending on top end stuff is a waste. It is about the bottle, the smell, the texture and the ohhhhhh I've treated myself feeling for 5 mins. I'm going back to the brand that I think is fantastic, but upon finishing I always want to see if the grass is greener. That brand being La Roche Posay which is always on offer in Boots, and even better if you use the recycling app.

@HazelTheDormouse that's a bit ignorant and I can't help but think you don't know much about adversity in life. You also completely ignore genes.

Hormonal acne or oily skin isnt a choice and isn't just going away by eating well and sleeping or going for a brisk walk. Myself I have a ton of childhood trauma and didn't sleep properly for 30 years. My body is worn from this and my face tells this story. No amount of veg is going to undo that.

@Twatalert great that you’re seeing a difference! I wanted to pop on and ask if anyone had recommended one of those skincare subscription services? I’m using Uncouth (weird name!) which gives me a serum with tretinoin and a few other ingredients. There is also Dermatica and Skin and Me. Also don’t forget spf!

Korean skincare! I had an awful reaction to retinal (medik8) and acids to the point of hives and burns around my eyes! Started hydrating products instead of stripping products & my skin is the best it's been! I've also had a couple of skin boosters but ages ago now.

I mainly use la Roche posay cleanser (tolerine) a centella oil cleanser and cosrx products and sometimes a facial oil at night Grin

Are centella and cosryx Korean? I hear great things about Korean but don't know what brands to buy!

Have you ever tried using a colour corrector (CC) cream? Feels much lighter than make-up but still improves your skin's appearance.

I use erborian CC Red Correct and I love it.

IButtleSir · 20/02/2025 08:54

Also regular exfoliating definitely improves the quality of my skin.

I am a fatty and the last person you'd imagine saying this, but a run in the morning keeps me glowy all day. I can't be bothered to go before long work days, but my skin looks noticeably better on run days.

It's on my list of things to try actually.

@mikado1 it's the Madagascar skin centella oil cleanser, and cosrx is a Korean brand, although I'm not too sure how popular it is over there Grin I get a lot of skincare from tk maxx it's brilliant! It's the snail mucin collection.

After the hives and my skin basically burning off, it's become quite sensitive... could be age too who knows?! But I find the hydrating gentle skincare is better for me. I've had the lumi eyes and skin boosters in the past as well and I wouldn't hesitate to get them again Smile

louisl8 · 20/02/2025 13:12

Also COLD WATER! I cleanse with very cold water after a shower and a clean flannel each morning and I swear it's helped x

Whoa horsey.

What an absolute over reaction.

You know NOTHING of my life, which has had some major dramas and traumas in it, more than anyone I know in person.

Despite this, I don’t bring my baggage to the S&B board where it’s generally a safe place to talk about the latest nail colour or what to do about your elevenses. It’s a superficial board, where we get to talk Princess and it’s a welcome relief from our daily stress.

They email your prescription prior to despatch and if you're not happy with it you contact customer services. Not sure if they have time to change it or whether that qoukd happen on month 2.
I've just subscribed to both. Two very different prescriptions. So now I have a choice to make!

I was on a different thread about skincare and have just signed up to Uncouth too
I've not had the confirmation of the order yet tho my payment has gone through
Let's see if this helps
I've used Dermatica and Skin & Me before but no real results

WhoWhereWhatWhy · 08/03/2025 11:32

I absolutely look my age, but my skin is clear and has a bit of a glow to it. After cleansing, I use glycolic acid in the morning and hyaluronic acid in the night. Moisturiser afterwards. I also like Clinique even better foundation as the coverage is good but it’s incredibly light.

BlackCat25 · 09/03/2025 21:30

Tretinoin and Azelaic Acid from Monderma have given me the best skin at 60. All pigmentation gone! No kidding. They are excellent.
