What makes your face glowing?

Twatalert · 18/01/2025 18:50

After a difficult time I'm starting to feel alive again and I'd like to try out some beauty products. I was never into much, but being in my 40s I start to look my age.

Occasionally I see women of similar age and their skin is absolutely glowing. Possibly they wear light make up (I prefer not for daily use, I don't like the feeling have having another layer on my skin) or use something else. Appreciate there are no miracles.

My face looks dull, perhaps slightly sagging, no teint to it. Slight hormonal skin issues.

How do I manage to look more alive?

@HazelTheDormouse what's tret?

Tretinoin - a synthetic, stronger form of retinol. It's a game changer.

Jillfi · 19/01/2025 16:18

Three things:
Drink 2l of water
Moisturise twice
Use tretinoin instead of retinol (get 0.025% from Monderma, Dermatica or Skin+Me)

@happyharpy78 do you use the tinted one. If so does it look nice not orangey?

Ameliepoulainandthephotobooth · 19/01/2025 16:25

Start from within. Eat well, exercise, water and sleep.

happyharpy78 · 19/01/2025 17:20

@mrssunshinexxx yes, the tinted one. It doesn't look orangey at all, it just looks like my skin but better!

jackdawss · 19/01/2025 17:38

I know it's a boring answer but I've tried so many expensive glow products and nothing works like walking briskly every day whenever I can/as much as I can.

Amen to that...

Good point, although I just end up a sweaty mess because at 43 I sweat from my hair ends at every opportunity.

The best glow I get during a walk on a cold winter day. Has to be close to zero degrees. Totally amazing.

Gua Sha every morning.

Only takes 5 to 7 minutes.

Fabulastic · 19/01/2025 19:01

Eating lots of salmon and melon really shows on my skin

SigmaFreud · 19/01/2025 19:02

I have been using Trinny London products both skincare and makeup and my skin has never looked better. I use the cleaner and moisturiser and wear the spf cream under makeup which gives the best glow.

Yeah same here, more of a long term effect than immediate for me.

Fruit and vegetables - water no alcohol - you can buy as much skincare as you like but what you put in your body shows in your face.

BlackCat25 · 20/01/2025 17:57

A colourful diet
Daily brisk walk
Drink plenty of water
8 hours sleep
Avoid stress as much as possible
…all the usual suspects!
Then bump start skin turnover and ‘glow’ with the use of a nightly retinoid such as Tretinoin. Only available on prescription in the UK but far superior to over the counter retinols (when you use them sensibly!) Try Monderma, Dermatica or Skin&Me. I use the former and have never had better skin in my life. Add a good, simple cleanser & moisturiser twice a day and SPF every morning. Bingo.

Nor coffee... but what fun would that be...

NotTheFreudYoureLookingFor · 20/01/2025 19:01

Tretinoin has done wonders for my skin since I started using it about five minutes ago. I'm going to share photos of my actual face 😵. Hopefully you can see that in the right photo my pores are smaller, my skin tone is less florid, and there at least a slight reduction in my crows feet and frown lines.

I get it from skin + me, in a "daily doser" combined with niacinamide and azelaic acid. If you use the promo code below, I get £10 credit, and you get first and fifth Daily Doser for £3.50.

Elemis pro collagen night cream. If I run out and start using something cheap for a few weeks, when I start using it again, friends/colleagues ask if I have had a facial. It’s horrendously expensive but it works.

I've just taken a look at the price! I'm tempted, but isn't really that good?

Hazey19 · 20/01/2025 19:09

Same as everyone above really. A vitamin A retinol at night and a vitamin C serum in the morning. I use the medik8 one in the morning which i really rate and alternate between this and the tan luxe serum. They both do really work!

Twatalert · 20/01/2025 19:53

What, Tretinoin on prescription only? What did you tell your GP? Do I just book an appointment for the time of the month hoping that my skin will break out exactly that month? Because it is random and not every time.

OP posts:
NotTheFreudYoureLookingFor · 20/01/2025 20:00

@Twatalert I'm pretty sure a GP would only prescribe tret for fairly serious acne, rather than "more glow".

Twatalert · 20/01/2025 20:01

So some only doc, maybe my private health insurance? I'm sure they will be delighted 😁 how do people get hold of T?

NotTheFreudYoureLookingFor · 20/01/2025 20:06

There's a few online UK-based prescribers like skin + me, and you can also get it over the counter in some countries (and shipped to the UK). Much cheaper than skin + me, but it usually doesn't come with the other ingredients (niacinamide and azelaic acid). It's also usually a relatively strong percentage which can be very irritating. The UK services like skin + me are good for titrating up from a low percentage, to get you to the point of managing the strong, cheaper stuff!
