What makes your face glowing?

After a difficult time I'm starting to feel alive again and I'd like to try out some beauty products. I was never into much, but being in my 40s I start to look my age.

Occasionally I see women of similar age and their skin is absolutely glowing. Possibly they wear light make up (I prefer not for daily use, I don't like the feeling have having another layer on my skin) or use something else. Appreciate there are no miracles.

My face looks dull, perhaps slightly sagging, no teint to it. Slight hormonal skin issues.

How do I manage to look more alive?

Castor oil! It's my new favourite thing.

Mix a tiny bit in with your normal moisturiser morning and evening, honestly it's amazing. You can also apply it directly to areas you feel need extra attention e.g under eye area and use as a lip balm. Also an amazing hair mask if mixed with coconut oil.

Good skincare routine
Maybelline 4-in-1 glow perfector instead of foundation
Lots of sleep
Lots of water
Mild acid toner like glycolic acid

Lentilweaver · 18/01/2025 19:09

Tretinoin. Numerous threads on this if you search.

Ribenaberry12 · 18/01/2025 19:11

I saw improvement when I started moisturising every morning and evening. Occasionally I use a serum too, I’ve used some different ones from No7 and Tropic so far and liked them all. I also swear by Clinique foundation as it’s nice and light.

A good exfoliation and Vitamin C. I use the Dr Dennis Gross Vitamin C Dewy Deep Cream.

Forgot to add: more water and less sugar.

dysonwithdeath · 18/01/2025 19:12

Drink 5 pints of water a day.
Retinol.

Elemis pro collagen night cream. If I run out and start using something cheap for a few weeks, when I start using it again, friends/colleagues ask if I have had a facial. It’s horrendously expensive but it works.

Edited

Also Dr Denis Gross for the exfoliation part - his skincare peel wipes are amazing but not cheap. I also find the beauty pie primer (pinky/purple tube) makes my skin look very glowy. I use it as a highlighter rather than all over my face. Best of luck!

I cleanse my face in the morning and then apply a few drops of Geek and Gorgeous Vitamin C Serum followed by a few drops of Tan Luxe hyaluronic acid tanning drops (and then SPF). The serum and drops give me a lovely healthy glow. Clinique moisture surge (moisturiser) is also good for hydrating skin and giving it a nice glow.

An exfoliating toner 2-3 times a week. MediK8 Press and Glow and Glow Recipe Watermelon Toner are nice. For a more budget choice Pixi Glow Toner is supposed to be good.

Exfoliating treatment once a week. Sunday Riley Good Genes is very popular but there will be others. The Ordinary Glycolic Acid is inexpensive in comparison.

Others have mentioned Vit C products in the morning. I really like Sunday Riley Afterglow. Unless you have very dry skin it's fine as your only moisturiser.

Tatcha The Dewy Skin cream gives a very nice hydrating glow that lasts but it is a very expensive cream. They do a 10ml mini version for try out purposes - usually a few for sale on Vinted also.

Drunk Elephant bronzing drops are great for a subtle insta glow. You add a couple of drops to moisturiser or serum and mix in.

Glow Recipe Watermelon Niacinamide Dew Drops also give a glowy look for a quick fix.

If you start with some basics - cleanse, tone, moisturise, sun screen you could then take a look at serums with ceramides and peptides and some eye creams but that might feel like too much to begin with.

In the past month I've started using one of those spinning cleanser brushes, with great results.

Prescription tret, great for fine lines and overall clear skin.

Coconut oil or Vaseline on neck and chest overnight.

L'Oréal rosy glow day cream under my make up also has an spf.

Twatalert · 18/01/2025 19:37

Thanks all, will research the products. I drink 3l of herbal tea and sleep better than I ever have.

Vitamin C serum, like Cerave Skin Renewing Vitamin C serum.

Twatalert · 18/01/2025 19:45

Vitamin c has been recommended a few times. What do you think of vit e (just because I heard about it a lot)?

@bakewellbride is castor oil actually oily? Just wondering if it would clog pores.

Long term - Vit C in morning and SPF in am. Tretnoin in the pm. Used in conjunction with a decent moisturiser, preferably with peptides or/and ceramides.

Short term - I swear by Elemis Superfood Primer.

bakewellbride · 18/01/2025 19:58

It's really thick that's why I recommended mixing it with something else. I still love it though. It's an ingredient in a wide range of beauty products, probably lots of the stuff mentioned on this thread. There are loads of YouTube videos on how to use it.

bakewellbride · 18/01/2025 19:58

Great user name btw! 😂

Jumbojem · 18/01/2025 20:15

I like The Inkey List vit C serum, it's pretty cheap and available in Boots, or online places (even Amazon).
Some kind of exfoliator, I'm using up some other products but have The Ordinary glycolic acid to try when I've finished those. Again, very reasonably priced and easily available.
Moisturiser, twice a day. I'm not that fussy about what I use, although I like the Byoma pink bottle ceramide one.
One thing I am trying which has made my skin more plump is snail mucin, from Cosrx. Honestly, it's sounds icky but it's just a clear scentless gel. I think it makes my 50 yr old skin look a lot less tired when I use it.

The alpha wipes? They are so good but I always chicken out with the price when I go to buy a big pack 😂 I’ve been using the Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant for years and stick with that mostly. Although I do a week with the wipes every so often if my skin needs a pick me up or I’ve got a big event coming up.

CharlotteCChapel · 18/01/2025 20:32

I'm surprised no one has mentioned niacimide. I'm now on my second bottle, first one was 3 percent and was with aloe vera, my new on is 5 percent.

Is this generally for spotty skin?

I've started using a vitamin e cream....I got it from Holland and Barrett and really love it.

Alwaysanotherwine · 18/01/2025 22:29

sorry but i imagine it’s make up

i know it’s not popular opinion but i’ve never met anyone who looked better without a little makeup

Adamante · 18/01/2025 22:32

Beauty Flash Balm - Clarins. I’ve been using it for 30 years. Phenomenal stuff. That and 1.5 litres of water a day, no matter what.
