How much is the most you've spent on glasses?

I'm due an eye test next week & reckon I'll get some new frames.

I've seen some gorgeous ones which I'll think I'll get but I'll also try on a load of others before deciding.

It's going to cost £500+ with the lens

This seems like a lot but I wear them a lot & they're so visible that I want them to be really nice.

How much have you spent & are there any makes you particularly like

The ones I'm interested in are by https://anneetvalentin.com

The most I've paid is £300 ish but I get an NHS voucher towards them.

CaptainAwkward · 17/01/2025 12:03

I’ve had some amazing specs from Vooglam

Kept getting ads for them and worried they might be dodgy but they’re actually ace

They have a good range of frames that are the same/near as damn it as designer ones and 2 pairs with my pretty strong prescription cost me £70

I used the frequent money off codes they send and they took about 2 weeks to arrive

HereComesEverybody · 17/01/2025 12:04

Thanks v much. I've never heard of vooglam so will take a look!

Glasses are so extortionate 😞

I am paying £350

By pure coincidence the frames are actually only £39 so couldn't get much cheaper
So it's all lenses 😞

Clearinguptheclutter · 17/01/2025 12:05

My last were about £400 but not because they’re trendy because I need fancy varifocals

EveryKneeShallBow · 17/01/2025 12:05

£495. Didn’t insure them, grandson snatched them off and snapped the arm off on day two. I buy from glasses direct £20 range now.

Floisme · 17/01/2025 12:07

I normally spend a similar amount to you, op, about half of which goes on lenses and the rest on frames. Like you, I wear my specs every waking moment so I'll shell out as much as I can afford, however much it hurts. I also use an independent, local optician - I wouldn't buy something like that online.

My current frames are from Etnia Barcelona
www.etniabarcelona.com/gb/en/optical.

I've also had Oliver Peoples and Face a Face.

RuthW · 17/01/2025 12:15

Glasses are very important if you wear them a lot. Worth soending as much as you need.

I wear them all the time and currently have 4 pairs for everyday and two pairs for work. I can not wear a pair that doesn't match my outfit.

I looked at glasses direct out of curiosity cos heard them mentioned before but I couldn't find any children's size glasses in there?

HereComesEverybody · 17/01/2025 12:16

Thanks for all the suggestions.

@Floisme I go to an excellent independent opticians too & they stivk a huge range of beautiful frames from all sorts of makers, many small companies.

I think the ones I like are at the lower end of the price scale.

But I sort of view it like a piece of jewellery I wear on my face!

I have frames from there that are several years old & I frequently get compliments or people asking where I got them.

I think they're worth the money.

My first pair about 5 years ago were cheap Ralph Lauren frames from Specsavers. I was a reluctant glasses wearer to begin with but now I rely on them so much I've made peace with them being a deliberate feature of my look iykwim.

My first pair were as unobtrusive as I could get...now I'm happy to own it!

I do wear them ALL THE TIME

No, they were my glasses. Grandson was around 18 months old.

purpleme12 · 17/01/2025 12:19

My ones now are bright blue
I actually think they're my favourite I've ever had and will be a bit sad to let go of them
There were some I found that were bright blue and glittery. The colour actually looked really good on me but the size and shape was all wrong so couldn't get those 😞

I did try some clear glasses on in another optician and while they suited me, I just kind of thought well if you're going to wear glasses you may as well wear something you can see that stands out!

Yes I was just confused when I looked cos couldn't find any and I expected them to

HereComesEverybody · 17/01/2025 12:21

@RuthW I totally get that 😀

I have 2 pairs currently & will add a third soon. All different colours so can wear them depending on what outfit I'm wearing..

I'm always struck by just HOW many amazing opticians / frame makers you see in italy & France & so many people have beautiful glasses.

Because I wear them I really notice them on other people now

A friend of mine brought his prescription to Italy & got frames & lens there which I'd never have thought of!

My big plan is to get cool prescription sunglasses so I can read outdoors in summer ☀️

I paid about £800 all in when I got mine 4.5 years ago. I’ve had the lenses changed twice since then at a cost of around £300 each time. I also have a back up pair and prescription sunglasses which were around £100 each.

It’s a horrible amount of money to pay for glasses, but I wear them all the time, and due to the issues I have with my eyes, I really can’t be without them - hence the back up pair.

I have no intention of ever changing the frames, and I do know that the specialised lenses make a difference as I am less comfortable in my cheapie back up glasses as they don’t have the additional features as it were. I’m due a check up shortly and I’m praying that I don’t need any adjustment to my prescription and I can get away without any further cost for another couple of years.

(Frames are Lindbergs and to be fair, I do get comments on them all the time and have done consistently for the last 4.5 years)

DecemberTulips · 17/01/2025 12:33

£0

But I don't see them as a fashion accessory etc. they're a tool that allows me to see clearer. the ones in Specsavers that are covered by the NHS voucher fulfil that use perfectly well.

You get your frames free?

What do you pay for lenses?

fivebyfivebuffy · 17/01/2025 12:37

I can't afford expensive ones but the pair I got from specsavers really suit me so I'll be getting exactly the same pair again soon!

MathsFiend · 17/01/2025 12:41

For those that get their glasses at glasses direct or similar, how do you get your glasses adjusted? I always need the legs adjusted otherwise they’d fall off my face

Floisme · 17/01/2025 12:46

'Face jewellery' is an excellent way of thinking about it op!

HereComesEverybody · 17/01/2025 12:50

I've fallen down a Lindberg rabbit hole & they have a 'precious' range made of solid 18ct gold & even have diamonds so they're absolutely jewellery for the face!

If I was a millionaire I'd have a pair!

I get mine from Asda opticians. Just had 2 new pairs of fabulous varifocals plus my eye test for £156.
I know that I wear them all the time, but i just can’t justify paying hundreds of pounds more when there are choices that I’m happy with that are so much cheaper.
