How much is the most you've spent on glasses?

I'm due an eye test next week & reckon I'll get some new frames.

I've seen some gorgeous ones which I'll think I'll get but I'll also try on a load of others before deciding.

It's going to cost £500+ with the lens

This seems like a lot but I wear them a lot & they're so visible that I want them to be really nice.

How much have you spent & are there any makes you particularly like

Think most I've spent is 250-300

mariaberria · 17/01/2025 12:53

£14 for two pairs incl lenses from Glasses Direct via an MSE offer I used before Xmas.

They have a range of really nice frames. You input your lense details and they deliver them 2 weeks later.

I could not be more impressed.

daffodilandtulip · 17/01/2025 12:53

£350 from specsavers. Kylie Minogue range, which is more girly than my usual. Frames about £150, the rest was variofocal/thin/antiglare. The thing annoys me the most is paying for anti glare ... if it's so necessary, why isn't it standard?!

HereComesEverybody · 17/01/2025 12:54

I had no idea Kylie had a range! I'm off to check them out now....

Yes

I find it so galling having to shell out so much money for something that's essential for me to see 😞

HereComesEverybody · 17/01/2025 12:55

@mariaberria did you pay £14 for 2 pairs of frames + lens? That's pretty incredible 😲

AuntieMarys · 17/01/2025 12:56

About £500. Varifocals

HereComesEverybody · 17/01/2025 12:57

I feel I might be veering into the varifocals zone ...it's 2 years since my last test & I know I'm using my reading glasses for a lot more than reading now....

Mine latest cost £625.

I'd usually pay about £180. But I because I am wearing them more and more (can't read a thing close up screens etc) I wanted frames that I loved.

Glittertwins · 17/01/2025 13:02

My current pair were over £600, half on frames and half on lenses, one of which is varifocal. That eye has deteriorated quite badly so I'd not want to be buying more than one pair at a time due to the cost of the lenses - I tend to have fairly neutral frames because of that cost.

shellyleppard · 17/01/2025 13:02

I've paid £180 but that included normal glasses, prescription sunglasses and reading ones 🧐

HereComesEverybody · 17/01/2025 13:02

That's what happened to me @Pancakeflipper & I fear it's a slippery slope 😅

@HereComesEverybody yes and they have an offer on now for two pairs for £15 if you are interested.

I had a pair from a local optician that cost me about £300. I measured the frames and got two identical pairs from GD for £14. Honestly I will never pay silly money again. I dont wear mine all the time - just for screens and reading.

WeeWigglet · 17/01/2025 13:12

I've just paid £325 for varifocals (+ anti glare stealth tax) with titanium frames at a local opticians - I get 20% off for paying for my eye tests by DD.

I like my specs as invisible as possible (without paying £££ for rimless!)

Agree with @mariaberria - no need to spend loads at the optician for simple prescriptions, but it is important to still have regular eye tests to buy the right strength & check your eye health.

I had guilt about the cost for ages.
But they have amazing lenses that have 3 aspects so can read books, use computer screens, and see far away without taking them on and off all the time.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 17/01/2025 13:13

I need coloured lenses for Irlens syndrome at £400 and the frames were £200.

An access to work grant paid for the test, lenses and contribution to the frames and I paid about £150.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 17/01/2025 13:13

£600, mostly lens

HansHolbein · 17/01/2025 13:16

I used to regularly spent £300 on glasses. Last year I got a nice pair from Chanel and within a year one of the arms snapped clean off! Nothing I could do to fix them.

Now I buy £20 ones from glasses direct. I’m not giving free advertising to anyone anymore.

bloodredfeaturewall · 17/01/2025 13:19

1k
for naice varifocals
totally worth it (for me) but I understand that others have a more limited budget.

it's not the frame that's expensive. it's the lenses and coatings.

EveryDayisFriday · 17/01/2025 13:20

£230 for prescription sunglasses but I get an annual allowance of £200 to spend on optical expenses from a health cash plan. I have lots of cheaper glasses and loads of contact lenses and a couple of more expensive glasses and sunglasses.

TinyRebel · 17/01/2025 13:20

About £350 on varifocals. Most of the cost is for the lenses though. Has made all the difference upgrading to Zeiss.
The frames only made up a third of the price, even though this time round they’re Armani ones. I usually get unbranded ones but really liked the unusual style of these.

Maxifly · 17/01/2025 13:21

Lovely porsche frames and varifocal lenses, £300. But just ordered some new ones, decided to give Asda a try. £100, different style altogether for a change. Hope they're OK!

HereComesEverybody · 17/01/2025 13:22

This is fascinating! Such a huge variance in costs & approach.

My first pair were inexpensive & they served me well.

But I work in a creative sector. I have hugely enjoyed wearing my nicer frames over the past couple of years. I work & can afford them so I refuse to feel guilty (internal battle in the beginning!).

I use them every day for many hours & my dh would think nothing of spending the equivalent amount on something related to his hobby.

For the first couple of years I was of the 'they're functional & do their job' mindset & then i just thought 'if I'm wearing these all day then i want them to be something special, that makes me happy each time I put them on & that I like seeing on screen on teams / zoom....
And here we are!

Maxifly · 17/01/2025 13:24

Oh and my porsche ones needed a new screw in one of the sides, independent optician didn't have the tool to fix it so sent them back and porsche sent me a brand new pair (plus the tool to tighten the screw if necessary)

MyNewLife2025 · 17/01/2025 13:33

I’m changing my glasses now.
Ive spent £130 on the frame. The lenses are about £700….

I think your question is a hard one.
You might be spending a lot of money on the frame - the bit you can see - but much less on the lenses. Whereas someone else will go for much cheaper frames but very expensive lenses.

Personally, I have a complex prescription, need lenses are thinned down as much as possible. The frames I can use are restricted (not too big, bot too small etc….). So they end up costing a bomb but not looking particularly trendy

(Having said that there are some really nice on the website you linked to!,)
