Corporate wear for NYC winter trip - help!

Hi ladies.

I’m travelling to NYC for a business trip (finance sector) next week. I’m not in the UK so not used to dressing for work in colder weather. How do you all make it work?!

Please help - tell me what to bring for five days of meetings?

I have:

A beautiful long wool coat, black.
plenty of trousers - but ankle skimming.
plenty of silk blouses - cream, pale blue, camel, pattern.
One tartan blazer (black/white/grey)
One suit - heavy textured black wool, (trousers and blazer)
a few jumpers but not sure they are smart enough, they are quite thick knits.

I think I need some decent footwear (I have black suede ankle boots with a heel) but probably need some comfy flats if we are walking anywhere.

Also some thinner jumpers for layering? I don’t really do cardigans. A polo neck (but I have a turkey neck myself - urgh).

A dress or two in case we go for dinner? Long sleeved/knitted??

Plus gloves and a hat??

Thanks in advance!

When I worked in NYC most women wore trainers for commuting and then changed into office footwear at work. Leather shoes or boots of all types were worn. It's not bitterly cold every day in winter either - it certainly CAN be - but check the forecast before you go.

The other thing to bear in mind is that while the outside can be very cold, offices tend to be overheated, so layers are good. Just ensure that your lower layers (a silk blouse is perfect) are also office attire appropriate.

A long wool coat with hat, gloves and scarf are definitely necessary. I'll never forget the way the Arctic winds get funneled between the skyscrapers, creating an icy wind-tunnel effect at street level.

I had the same dilemma last year. New Yorkers seem to dress for the weather so I took a long puffa coat as warmer than my smart wool coat. Everywhere has cloak rooms and if you can always whip off your ugly but warm coat as you enter and no one will notice/care!

I wore a thin cardigan as a layer but not to go with my work outfit - again would just whip off as I took off my coat.

I wore trainers to get about and smart shoes in my bag (like I do in London)

But do check the forecast- it ended up being quite mild and dry when I was there in January so found my big puffa annoying and too warm!

Thanks both! Good point I will check the forecast, had just assumed would be freezing and bitter, I hate the cold! But I’d really really rather not travel with a puffer!

I once went to New York at the end of January and have never felt so cold in my life. I just checked the temperatures and some days are -8 during the day over the next few weeks. I would take plenty of trousers, proper snow boots etc if you are doing some sightseeing as well as work. And those thick jumpers sound good. Plus a hat etc.
