Why do socks wear out so quickly these days?!

Is it just me, or do socks wear through at the heels alarmingly quickly these days?! I’ve gone through a pair today - both socks - which is only their third time of wearing!

Can anyone recommend socks which are comfortable and durable?

thanks

I think bamboo socks get holes very quickly. Have reverted to high percentage cotton socks.

Falke socks are fabulous. They're comfortable, wash well and they last.

Socks from Pairs Scotland are also fabulous.

H and m basic black socks. About 7-10 pairs in a pack.
i bought a pack for my hospital birth Bag and Ds is almost 5 so pretty decent. Washed most weeks unless wearing thicker winter or sandals so probably on 200+ washes

I was admiring my Seasalt socks that were bought for Christmas several years ago - not a hint of them wearing through, and they have a lovely soft top.

I also still have a pair of socks I bought on the French exchange more than 30 years ago. I think the brand was Chevignon. There's still plenty of life in them.

Supermarket and M&S socks seem to wear thin very quickly.

I've just bought some gorgeous warm and comfy socks from Community Clothing - founded by Patrick Grant of Sewing Bee fame. Made in the UK

I wear cheap Primark ankle socks inside my good socks. The Primark socks wear out and get replaced and the good ones last longer.

I buy marks and spencers men's/youths socks.
Unsurprisingly they last 10 times as long as the women's socks.

Interesting replies, thank you - my socks tend to be supermarket ones to be honest….i think I need to branch out!

I buy these too. The last set I had lasted about 5 years. I was actually sick looking at them! I usually buy striped or spotty ones so that they don't get mixed up with DP and DS1's plain black. I think women are definitely short changed in the sock department.

Wow!
The M&S women’s socks (“super soft”) have been abysmal in terms of how long they last, so that’s worth knowing.

I wear Seasalt socks, lovely and comfortable and last well, they are quite expensive but there are a few left in the sale at the moment, I recently stocked up.

Mainly because toenails get hornier and heel skin gets tougher and more abrasive as we get older…

SnowyIcySnow · 14/01/2025 07:06

I've changed to bamboo socks, and they are lasting much better. But I've also moved away from supermarket socks. So I'd suggest one (or both) of those changes.
