Looking for a dress for a 60s rock and roll theme party later this year. Fallen in love with this Amy Lynn puffball dress which will either look amazing or awful. Only thing is I’d prefer not to buy it and wear only once but can’t for the life of me figure out how I’d style it other than as if I’m going to a christmas party… any suggestions, or should I give in and look for something else? I definitely already have a dress I could wear I’m just looking for an excuse to buy this one really

Is there any way to wear a full red velvet skirt in even a slightly casual way?? I think it would work with my cropped leather jacket but totally stuck for other ideas.

I quite like that. It would look good with a big chunky jumper and boots.

NewZealandintherain · 12/01/2025 10:21

or a white shirt tied at the waist and trainers/converse.

Agreed.

I think if it's for the theme the OP is looking for it needs a knotted white shirt anyway, worn with flat ballet pumps. The style of the top isn't 1960s or rock and roll.

I wouldn't call it a puffball. Once worn to your event, just take the top off and make it into a normal skirt. It's a bit weird though as the velvet is poly/elastane so stretch, but the lining is 100% cotton, so no stretch. There's probably even enough fabric there to make some funky culottes out of that skirt. How's your sewing skills?

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 12/01/2025 12:15

Could also put a ballet wrap cardigan or a ballet wrap shirt over it or a cropped cardigan, no longer than waist length, all of which would make it wearable as a day outfit and fit the theme.

There's loads of these available at all price points.

Agreed. It's not a puffball. To remove the top will need creating a straight waistband. The existing waist dips at back and front.

I don't see the point of turning it into culottes (although tbh, I don't see the point of culottes full stop)

ScouserInExile · 12/01/2025 12:41

It doesn't fit the theme. You'd be much better with something full skirted in a slightly stiff cotton, the colour isn't really 60's rock & roll anyway. This to me looks too gothic. I mean, I love it but it's crying out for black leather jacket and long, clumpy DM style boots.

Me either re the culottes! I just thought velvet lends itself more to those than a skirt.

Not good enough for that 😂

I didn’t call it a puffball, that’s the name of the dress from the brand.

How would you style it as a skirt though? That’s where I’m stuck.

Did you read the thread? You were given several suggestions.

Boxy jumper
Chunky jumper
Shirt knotted and tied 50s style
Ballet wrap top- cotton or wool.
Cropped cardigan.
Boots, converse, ballet pumps.

The dress isn't however correct for the theme.

itsstillmehere · 12/01/2025 17:21

This doesn't say 1960s to me.

That’s how I was thinking of wearing it after! Much more ‘me’ than a 60s swing dress.
No it’s not perfectly on theme, but it has a full skirt and will do the job (I doubt I’ll be the least on theme there, trust me 😅)

I like the idea of a ballerina cardigan. I don’t, however, own one and if I’m buying new clothes I want them to fit in with what I already own… as much as I love this dress I don’t think I’ll get enough wear out of it to be worth it.
I have a plain black circle skirt that will fit the bill, I’m just not excited about it at all, lol

Shame there were no reviews. It looks like the straps on it would be a pita to keep up.
I feel like if you bought it you might struggle to find places to wear it (stick with the black skirt!😁).
