i have only ever once had the misfortune to be a bridesmaid and that was when i was 6. the shocking pink head to foot including dyed shoes and hair band makes me cringe now but all the photos that have me smiling highlight the fact i had recently lost my front baby teeth!
i am always reading about the horrors of bridesmaids dresses, anyone else want to reveal all so to speak

They've come a long way since you were a little girl. I only ever see people looking beautiful and elegant these days.

2 bridesmaids, measurements taken from each for "made to measure" dresses. They arrived labelled '12' & '14'. The other bridesmaid and I tried both on repeatedly and couldn't work out which was which.

A peach raw silk tube is not flattering in these circumstances (or any really).

And they cost a fortune (I wasn't paying and didn't want to upset the bride by complaining). Such a rip off.

I have been a bridesmaid four times.

  1. Approx 1982. I wore a blue floral dress. Probably made by one of my aunties.
  1. 1985ish. A white dress with puffed sleeves and a full skirt and a lemon tabard over the top. I don't know how this idea came about but it actually looked rather sweet. My mum made the tabards for all the bridesmaids.
  1. About 1987? Monstrous baby blue frilly dress. I loved it as a ten year-old but in retrospect it was hideous.
  1. Last summer (age 46). Wore a pale green long dress with a bit of detailing on the bodice and a floaty skirt and it was lovely.

I don't anticipate having another go at bridesmaiding but I enjoyed it last year more than I did as a child. When you're little and it's the 80s, you've only been asked because you happen to be related to the bride and will look sweet in whatever the bride has chosen. As an adult you've been asked because the bride genuinely really loves you and wants you to play a special part in her big day. 💚

I had a lemon yellow dress ordered deliberately a size too big by the bride. I do not suit lemon yellow. I was extremely thin after a period of horrible, horrible stress and looked even thinner in this diaphanous dress. My mum did her best with elastic to rescue it, bless her.

I am no longer in contact with the bride. Icing on the cake, as it were.

My SIL was so insecure she made all of her bridesmaids wear cheap white polyester trousers that you could see their knickers through and short sleeved button up shirts.

😂
