Jeans help? What style now

Im 37 and grew up in the skinny jeans era (which I loved) i find skinny jeans just easy to style with boots in winter, loafers or ballet flats in sunmer.
Im aware this style is considered "out" now, trying to embrace fashion a bit more and feel more confident in my appearance ive been looking at getting some wardrobe updates. Id love a pair of cool jeans but not sure what to get, ive got some slim jeans which are skinny around the bum but then more straight down from the knees. Ive tried wider jeans but feel they are really unflattering on my figure and makes my legs look huge. Can anyone suggest some styles that are flattering but still stylish? And can go nicely with boots, jumpers etc thanks

I'm exactly like you. The good news is that allegedly skinny jeans are back as of autumn 2024, so we're accidentally back in fashion. Hurrah.

Hopefully! I suppose all the trends come back around again at some point! Its definitely handier for tucking into boots in this weather!
Im in an office with some lovely girls (all early 20s) and feel like an unstylish frump beside them unfortunately so would like a few "trendy" pieces to feel a bit better about myself just not sure where to start!

Barrel jeans are really in. I like them, they’re like mom but a bit wider. I got lovely ones in Sainsbury’s of all places!

I’m still wearing my skinnies and boots religiously. They suit me and are much more practical in the rain/snow than a wide leg! It’s much harder to find looser/longer jumpers now though which is annoying.

I do think slim mom jeans look good with chunky boots also but I’ve just never found the right combo for me.

If that's fashion I want no part in it 😂

Uniqlo wide leg, just wide enough to not be straight or mum jeans, but not so wide they scare (I do own a pair of Paige flares which are awesome and a huge width but there's a time and place!) and the Uniqlo ones are super comfortable.

Honestly the shops carry every conceivable style of jeans at the moment. Plenty of people are still buying skinny jeans.

I've got wide from Next, skinny from Mint Velvet and bootcut from M&S and I wear the skinnies the most - they're flattering and anything goes with them.

I would just try a load on and see what you feel good in.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 10/01/2025 06:31

M and s harper are my favourites at the moment. Barrel jeans make me look like a barrel, skinnies are uncomfy. I'm fussy!

Britpopbaby · 10/01/2025 07:17

Straight leg are meant to be back in.

coolcahuna · 10/01/2025 07:24

I love the Sainsbury's barrel jeans. I just don't know what shoes to wear with them other than trainers so I've not worn them since it got so cold as I've been living in boots.

TheOGCCL · 10/01/2025 09:32

Could you get to a Levi’s shop? They have so many different styles and the assistants seem to love encouraging you to try something different. You don’t have to buy from there although the jeans are good quality.

Printedword · 10/01/2025 10:15

I haven't invested in any barel jeans yet, but the TU ones look flattering and more like a wideleg tapered if that makes sense. I had some a bit like that yrs ago, but don't think they had a specific name as a shape then.

I've got skinny, straight, ankle length and wide leg in my collection. At home I like to wear skinny/jeggins with a bit jumper for comfort and put on boots over them for walks and trips to shop. I've been known to wear jeans to work - usually dark wash straight or wideleg. Straight work differently with boots - usually suede ankle boots under not over.

I do feel skinnies never really went away and have seen some quite young colleagues wearing them. Usually our warehouse temporary staff ages 18-25. Practical and stretchy, I guess.

I draw the line at bootcuts and flares. Been there, bought them but hated them so much I didn't really wear them. So I won't do it again unless there's nothing else and my other jeans wear out

Shinyandnew1 · 10/01/2025 10:20

I've been reading about skinny jeans being 'on their way out' since 2008-they are still everywhere I look! Women walking down the high street, mums waiting at the school gates, people drinking cocktails at the pub over Christmas!

Wear what you like and what you think suits you :)

Doggymummar · 10/01/2025 10:20

I have skinnies for dog walking and, as you say tucking in boots on cold days. I have just bought in the sales some wider leg Hollister jeans/trousers for non winter weather to wear with flip flops or trainers in Spring or autumn they are pull on with drawstring waist. I also have a pair of mom jeans that I turn up to wear with walking books, chunky ankle boots and look nice, they are just a bit wider through the leg

Tbh have the confidence to wear what you want. That's not to say I don't get what you're saying....I "made" myself wear the wider leg jeans, I've tried on barrel and carrot leg jeans. I've bought "mom" and boyfriend jeans.....and all of them I feel awful in, and the photos of myself in them...well 😱😢
I'm an apple shape with a smaller bum and slim legs and skinnies are my best friend. And when I wear them ,I feel more comfy and more confident. So I continue to wear them. Even my husband says they're my best jeans and he notices nothing usually!
Tbh I've sold all my jeans and I just now stick with the various skinny jeans by levis. And I'm picking those up from about £28-£40 on amazon...which is cheaper than I ever paid for high street jeans!!

Gettingslimmer · 10/01/2025 14:47

My daughter tells me I’m the last human to wear skinnies, lol, but I honestly don’t feel the other styles are flattering on a lot of people. She’s invested in different pairs, barrel, mom, boyfriend etc, and she’s very tall and very slim and she does get away with it, but I think she looks better in skinnies. Not that I’d tell her that,

however I do think that some folks can’t get away with skinnies, so other styles are more flattering for them.

so for me, I think it is down to body shape. And I do believe you should wear the style of Jean you look best in, and not try to follow fashion . Be an individual and wear what works for you body and style.

Floralsofa · 10/01/2025 14:55

Wide leg for me (but not ridiculously wide) I prefer bootcut, but I'm a powerlifter and my thighs look ridiculous in them unfortunately. I also have mom jeans, don't know if those are 'in' or not though!

Floisme · 10/01/2025 15:11

I don't dress for my shape any more. I used to believe in it and ended up with a really negative mindset about my thighs, upper arms and jowls, so I gave it all up and I enjoy getting dressed much more now.

I don't have a favourite style at the moment but switch between wide leg, flared, barrel leg and straight leg, not skinnies because I'm still bored with them - I'm sure that will change at some point but I expect it will take a few more years yet. I don't know which shape posters would regard as flattering for me and I don't really care. I love wearing a different style pretty much every day of the week. I think it's the best thing about current fashion.

So my advice, op, which you can of course ignore if you wish, is that there will quite likely never be a better time to try out lots of different styles. It's not usual to have as much choice as there is now and, while it might become the new norm, it equally might not.
