Growing out grey

Dyed my hair for over 30 years. Mid 40s now. Dye it every 6 weeks to cover grey roots. I have grey and white. Debating whether to let it grow out. A woman at yoga has and it looks great.

Anyone else done this and how do I get around having to look professional while having patchy hair?

What colour dye? What colour are you naturally? I stopped dying mine 20 months ago... All grey now at 53...love it!!

If you are dark haired but still have some warm brown colour in you hair, I would recommend Bleach Fade to Grey. It will take the warm colour out of your hair and blends it with the grey and white. It made the transition for me much easier - to the extent that my hairdresser recommended it to her other clients trying to transition.

I'm ashy mouse naturally. Dye it brown with some blond painted on the ends. I have a bright white poliosis streak which I dye and grey roots show after about 3 weeks.

I'm also short and am concerned about looking like an elderly hobbit.

I had some highlights put in last month to complement and balance my grey streaks as I let the grey grow out. My hair stylist has done it in a way that means I can keep topping up the colour a couple of times a year or just let it grow out to a natural grey, whatever I prefer as time goes on.

How long is your hair? Mine is to bra strap. Trying to grow it before it becomes too thin with age!

Grey blending is what you are after, if you need a transition to being able to grow it out without going cold turkey. There’s a lot of videos out there that explain, Rosiebaylishair on Insta is brilliant and a specialist, but charges £££ for the privilege.

At 65 quite a bit older than you, but let my grey grow out in my mid-50s. Hair had been highlighted for a long time in various colourways, so hairdresser lightened the highlights to platinum and gradually reduced the number until I was all silver. Some hair underneath and at the back of my neck is still very dark.

I love my hair now 😍- it's below my shoulders and in great condition despite regular swimming. So easy not to have to be thinking about colour appointments all the time, and the cost...no regrets

No 2 all over, before that I had an undercut. Now I just have a close crop all over. It's a shiny steely grey.

suki1964 · 05/01/2025 01:28

I went cold turkey, with an undercut - took about 6 months before all the obvious dye had grown or been cut out but having a very textured cut kind of disguised it, it never looked terrible

EveInEden · 05/01/2025 09:55

Anyone regret it?

Also grew it out over covid times, now have past shoulder length silvery mix. Love it. No worries about roots, no dyeing. Regularly complimented!

Tinselinthewhoopsiebasket · 05/01/2025 16:43

At 51 I got it cut from bra strap level to below ears and stopped dyeing it 2 months later... Now just grazes shoulder.... Leaving it as prefer it up in the summer... Banking we get one!! Can post a pic as dd took one post recent cut....

I wonder if I'm the woman at yoga? Showed off my new white( not even grey) buzz cut to my class on Saturday. It was formerly dyed purple. I buzz cut it all off in one go to save the hassle of growing it out and raised over £1K for charity in the process. Never seen myself with white hair before! I'll find a pic...

I went super short and now have grown back to a Bob. I was naturally dark but now dark with lots of bright silver. I love mine, realise not for everyone.
