When will wide legged go out of fashion?!

Is it just me or is anyone willing for wide legged trousers to disappear?

Don’t get me wrong, they look great….on tall willowy people or anyone under 25.

But for 40 something, short, curvy me they really don’t suit! I’m a 12/14 and 5ft 4ish.

I have one casual pair which I bought to try and embrace the trend. They are very comfortable and easy to wear but I don’t think they do me any favours.

I’m looking for a new pair of black trousers for more dressy wear, fancied something velvety for winter but wide legged style looks awful on me and I can’t find many other options out there. Anything in another more straight cut looks there just to appease older buyers and seem frumpy.

Am I alone in willing wide legged cuts to do one and be gone?!

For a while it was difficult to find anything with a mid-waist, everything was bloody high-waisted. Which is awful if you have a short torso and big boobs.

I love the wide leg look (sorry OP). My most recent holy grail is Levi’s XL wide leg jeans. I also bought the same cut in chino fabric (both beige and black. They are mid-rise, with slant pockets rather than jean pockets, skim over the hips and then widen. I’m 5”4 and the 31” length is perfect.

Mid 50's 5' 1" here and wear both wide leg and barrel leg jeans (obviously need to get them shortened) and my trick is to have the waist slight too big, tuck in top and cinch waist.

The barrel leg jeans are just above ankle
length and look great with chunky ankle boots

I don't really wear my skinnies any more but sometimes wear slim leg trousers as am a fan of the oversize jumper which doesn't look right with wide legs.

It's all about proportion and balance imo

suburburban · 03/01/2025 14:00

I quite like them but it is hard to know what to wear on top

Some of the shorter cardis don't suit me

PagodaOak · 03/01/2025 14:40

It’s not that I don’t like a wide leg, I just prefer a slimmer silhouette. I find the straight leg more flattering.

I don’t massively follow trends, but I can’t see myself wearing skinnies again. They were uncomfortable back in the noughties (I have flashbacks of always pulling the damn things up!) and they feel dated now.

This shape. I have jeans the same shape. They need to fit your hips and the top part of your bum.

Bit more expensive and always need turning up but I have many nice trousers from here.

I like wide leg trousers. I just wish I could find some that weren’t high waisted! Who wants their waistband to almost touch their bra? I really miss low rise trousers. I’m hoping they will make a comeback along with the 90s nostalgia.

Oh god no.
Low rise jeans were big the same time as all tops went really short. So many arse cracks and white bellys on show EVERYWHERE. It was awful.
I love a high waisted jean, pared with decent length tips everything is held in and contained and no muffin top slipping out. So comfy
And as someone who has a long torso and a chubby belly they didn't want hanging out it was impossible to buy clothes..
I don't care what everyone else wears, I just hate when I can't find what I am comfortable in as suddenly the fashion has changed and that is all that is available.

MayaPinion · 03/01/2025 15:09

I love wide leg trousers and live in Hollister Livvy’s which are comfortable and flattering. Ive always hated skinnies though. Almost everyone looks like have chicken legs in them.

CarolinaWren · 03/01/2025 15:28

I love them, but I think they're a trendy look, especially the extremely wide, baggy style. I was just looking at some Levis jeans on sale yesterday, but I decided to pass as I'm not sure I'd get a lot of use out of them, especially since I already have a couple pairs.

Bignanna · 03/01/2025 15:33

Wide legs are now a classic. Palazzo pants are very flattering if they are of floaty material, fit over the hips and flare. Gathered waist bands make you look fat.

Oh no I have just ordered some light weight denim ones.

I am size 20 and have no idea what trousers to wear at weekends and end up wearing my black work ones which makes me feel yuck.
Summer is ok as I wear long maxi skirt.

Any one offer any help? Don't really feel comfortable in jeans.

I'm a 20...a fitted shorter top, I prefer the stripes if I can. chunky trainers.

jannier · 03/01/2025 15:41

Pl242 · 03/01/2025 09:55

I think I struggle as I’m hourglass but have a tummy. So can see a fitted top works better with wide legged trousers but feel conscious of my tummy rolls!

But with a straight leg I can wear something semi fitted on top which covers the tummy a bit but accentuates my waist. They also make my bum look better. My bum is probably my best feature and is eclipsed by the wide legged trouser!

I can just about style my one pair. Tuck in a long sleeved t but have a shacket over. I still struggle with shoes but between motherhood, pandemic and wfh haven’t bought new shoes or boots for ages so need some new styles probably.

But to wear them more dressily is still a challenge. As a PP says I’m of average height but the length of many just swamp me and I still don’t think they suit those of us of shorter leg.

I can see why the skinny jeans haters are loving their moment! I wore my skinnies back in the day but have been a straight cut of jean girl for some years now, for better or worse.

Get a top that sits just below the waist band not too fitted just skimming

SleeplikeababyTonight · 03/01/2025 15:44

I agree, they sometimes suit women with long legs better. Could you compromise and go for boot leg? At least they're still in fashion too? I wear bootleg jeans, and have been tucking them loosely into boots through the winter. Or somebody correct me if I'm wrong!
Can you not get away with skinnie jeans if you fold up the bottoms, or is this still a no no? Maybe somebody super fashionable will come a long and put me right!
I actually love flared jeans, found the perfect pair, but they didn't do a shorter length 🤣 I should have kept my pair from 2002!

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 03/01/2025 15:57

I have always loved skinny jeans, because my legs are very slim and my best feature.

It took me a long time to get my head around wide legs but I love them now!! I have a black pair by Part Two that fit like a glove, and I've just bought another 2 different coloured pairs in the sales!

I didn't use to wear dresses at all either but I love them now too. I've lost quite a bit of weight over the last few years and maybe it's down to my changing shape - don't think it's the advancing years lol!

I think there's plenty of choice out there for everyone.

SleeplikeababyTonight · 03/01/2025 16:13

I think with skinny jeans you need slim, but shapely legs, to avoid the chicken leg look. I believe in wearing what suits your figure, and not purely because it is in fashion. I try to wear what suits me, while being as close to not dated as possible. Being a woman isn't easy!! Do men have these issues??

Edited

I thought they were called bootleg because they were wide enough to go over boots, not so you tuck them into boots. Have I been doing it wrong all these years?

Rosebud987 · 03/01/2025 17:09

As a 5ft10 size 10 I hope they stay forever! They have made my life so much easier for workwear!

lindyloo57 · 03/01/2025 17:21

I do like wide leg trousers but more for summer as in a lighter fabric, I've yet to find a winter pair, I struggle with what length they should be . Ankle, above ankle full length , in summer its easy as I ware them with flats so full length, I did buy a pair of the marks and spencer pocket front wide leg jeans in black, which I do like for going out or shopping, but not for sitting around at home, I'm on the hunt for trouser I can lounge in but not joggers or leggings.

There's a current thread for that... plenty of non jogger suggestions:

Joggers .. loungewear … whatever! http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/styleandd_beauty/5239586-joggers-loungewear-whatever

henlake7 · 03/01/2025 17:51

I love a wide leg, esp high waisted. Its def the style I find most flattering but Im pretty sure you can find pretty much every style available at the moment.

I know there are still plenty of straight, skinny or tapered trousers out there (I know coz I have enormous calves and cant fit into any of them!!LOL).

LawrenceSMarlowforPresident · 03/01/2025 18:02

I was hesitant to give wide legged trousers a go. I never wore skinny jeans at all, as I found them extremely unflattering on me (and to be honest, I think they are unflattering on most people). I've mostly stuck to slim or straight styles for ages. But last year I decided to try some wide legged styles. And to my surprise, I really like them, though I prefer ones that aren't enormously wide. They can look very nice on a variety of figures IMO. I have some in corduroy, some in linen, some in cotton. I plan to wear a pair today for an outing to the cinema and dinner out.

As PPs have mentioned, there is much more choice in trouser shapes these days than ever before. I hope that will continue.
