When will wide legged go out of fashion?!

Pl242 · 03/01/2025 09:10

Is it just me or is anyone willing for wide legged trousers to disappear?

Don’t get me wrong, they look great….on tall willowy people or anyone under 25.

But for 40 something, short, curvy me they really don’t suit! I’m a 12/14 and 5ft 4ish.

I have one casual pair which I bought to try and embrace the trend. They are very comfortable and easy to wear but I don’t think they do me any favours.

I’m looking for a new pair of black trousers for more dressy wear, fancied something velvety for winter but wide legged style looks awful on me and I can’t find many other options out there. Anything in another more straight cut looks there just to appease older buyers and seem frumpy.

Am I alone in willing wide legged cuts to do one and be gone?!

God yes, me! I think they look awful but that’s maybe because I’ve always had big thighs and I’m baffled by anyone who would intentionally want to make their legs look bigger 🤣

CakeIsNotAvailable · 03/01/2025 09:13

I'm a similar size to you (size 14, 5ft3) and I agree! I find wide legged trousers really unflattering. Ditto barrel leg jeans 😫

I'm just buying cuts that suit me - I don't think I look frumpy or dated.

anon2022anon · 03/01/2025 09:15

Also a size 14 and love the wide legs- so much more comfortable, and definitely more flattering for my pear shape. I look like a carrot in skinny styles.

Lentilweaver · 03/01/2025 09:17

I hope never. I love them! So comfy.
Uniqlo has a lot of straight cuts.

Snowmanscarf · 03/01/2025 09:17

I’m pear shaped and love wide leg and boot cut trousers.

Life’s too short. If they don’t suit you, find a style that does.

aSpanielintheworks · 03/01/2025 09:17

I'm an apple shape so I absolutely love them for balancing out my too slim lower half. If I team with a slim jumper I look balanced.
I hated the skinny jean trend, no matter what I put on top, I look top heavy.
At the end of the day though, wear what you know feels right. Ski pants are meant to be making a comeback, I'm absolutely dreading that one!

LouisvilleSlugger · 03/01/2025 09:22

I really struggled to give up on skinnies, having worn and loved them for years. I had to admit they suddenly looked so dated. And now I see how unflattering they are on anything but a slim leg.

It is a bit of a shock to see yourself in wide legs, but I honestly think now they’re much more flattering. I don’t however think velvet would suit many. I agree straight legs are very frumpy, on me anyway.

I think it’s a case of trying on more styles until you find what suits you. I have a few really nice pairs from H&M. They’re slouchy and have pockets. I often get asked where they’re from. For me, they look best with something fitted on top. The big jumpers I wore with skinnies make me look like a blob.

psuedocream3 · 03/01/2025 09:22

I don't hate the idea of them, I don't think they are the most flattering on anyone though.

And what footwear do you wear with them that doesn't look stupid?

Pl242 · 03/01/2025 09:23

Don’t get me wrong, I buy things that suit me but you can’t deny that when something is a trend it dominates what is for sale. For example, a third of the 1500 trousers in the John Lewis sale are wide legged!

And yes re the shoes @psuedocream3 !

I am also 5'3 and very curvy. I have black wide legged trousers from Uniqlo . I tend to wear with chunky trainers and I always get compliments. I have noticed that fitted tops are more flattering with them.

Sunshineandrainbow · 03/01/2025 09:26

Oh no I have just ordered some light weight denim ones.

I am size 20 and have no idea what trousers to wear at weekends and end up wearing my black work ones which makes me feel yuck.
Summer is ok as I wear long maxi skirt.

Any one offer any help? Don't really feel comfortable in jeans.

Which H and M ones would you recommend?

Netcam · 03/01/2025 09:30

I'm 5'3 and got these black cotton velvet trousers from Jigsaw recently and am really pleased with them. A bonus is that they are machine washable unlike some velvet trousers I found.

They are supposed to be jeans but don't look or feel like jeans and are very stretchy and comfortable. They are full length on me and straight leg and could easily be dressed up.

When will wide legged go out of fashion?!
Garlicnorth · 03/01/2025 09:30

I REALLY hope wide legs dominate as much, and for as long, as skinnies did! I had no jeans at all for 12 years because I can't wear low-rise and look absurd in skinnies.

At least there are still plenty of skinny-legs around for you lot. There were no wide-legs on the market while you were having your day (decade).

Onlyvisiting · 03/01/2025 09:32

I loathed everything about skinny jeans and have stubbornly stuck with straight/bootcut despite everyone my age wearing them.
They can all burn in a fire and never be seen again as far as I am concerned .

borntobequiet · 03/01/2025 09:33

I hate them. It’s difficult to get the length right, they flap around your ankles and get soggy and wet when it rains. And I’m old enough to have endured them on and off since the 1970s.

TheOGCCL · 03/01/2025 09:34

I think wide legged trousers suit me more than skinnies (as I’m very top heavy) but they are harder to wear imo. Footwear, rain and the fact they make me feel more dressed up (not necessarily what I’m looking for day to day). A lot of wide trousers are really long as well, can easily swamp me. I prefer something still looser but more tapered.

I’m just glad trousers are having a moment after all the midi dresses.

Sasskitty · 03/01/2025 09:35

5’4” isn’t short - I think it’s the average height for women in the UK!

Floisme · 03/01/2025 09:36

What@Garlicnorth said. We must have had at least 15 years of skinnies totally dominating the high street so I think wide leg lovers are owed a little bit lmore time in the sun.

For what it's worth, I'm 5'3 and 68. And guess what, when it's raining, I don't wear them because now there is a choice and long my it continue.

I don't even inherently dislike skinnies and I'm sure there will come a time when they'll start to look interesting again but right now, just the thought of wearing them again bores me to my bones.

Imposter1212 · 03/01/2025 09:37

I so want to love the wide leg look and I keep searching for the perfect pair. I'm 5ft 2 and ordered a pair of wide leg jeans from next in the petite section. Picked them up last week and goodness me!

They are like a foot too long. Chucked them at my 5ft 9 husband and they are too long even for him. No idea what's gone wrong there. I sized down and I reckon I could go another 2 sizes down as they are massively big on the waist and bum.

Currently hoping the slim flare leg I ordered from Marks and Spencer in extra short are better.

Meanwhile DD has the opposite problem. She's 11 but is 5ft 4 (all leg and arm) but very lean. She needs age 14 for length but they fall off her waist.

It’s very difficult to find something different. I went through M&S a few weeks ago and it was wide legged, after wide legged , after wide legged. There were not wide legged trousers but not much so it meant not choice in fabric or colour.
Im a bit taller than you, OP, similar size, don’t wear heels. Im desperate for wide legged be out of fashion. They have their uses e.g I have a linen wide legged trousers for traveling but otherwise it’s very difficult to look good in them if you are not tall or don’t wear high heels.

researchers3 · 03/01/2025 09:43

I'm short, 40 something and love them!! I think they are flattering on me!

Barrell legs however... awful.

UndergroundOvergroundWomblingFreeby · 03/01/2025 09:45

@Pl242
You could try flares or bootcut instead.

Butterflyfern · 03/01/2025 09:47

I think there is more choice available in trousers shape now than there has been for years! Just stick with skinnies/chinos/cigarette style if that suits you better.

But,not all wide leg are equal. The ones that suit me best have a more structured waistband as they highlight my waist (hourglass figure). Some have more flared legs, others are cut neater. Fabric weight matters more too imo
