When will wide legged go out of fashion?!

Is it just me or is anyone willing for wide legged trousers to disappear?

Don’t get me wrong, they look great….on tall willowy people or anyone under 25.

But for 40 something, short, curvy me they really don’t suit! I’m a 12/14 and 5ft 4ish.

I have one casual pair which I bought to try and embrace the trend. They are very comfortable and easy to wear but I don’t think they do me any favours.

I’m looking for a new pair of black trousers for more dressy wear, fancied something velvety for winter but wide legged style looks awful on me and I can’t find many other options out there. Anything in another more straight cut looks there just to appease older buyers and seem frumpy.

Am I alone in willing wide legged cuts to do one and be gone?!

I’m five foot one and size 12 - I love them! I have to wear them in a more slouchy fabric rather than the stiff jean type otherwise they swamp me. Hopefully they’ll be around for a while yet.

Barrel leg jeans are an abomination - they look like the wearer has spent too long in the saddle.

I think the choice of shape we have right now is great - the best thing about fashion at the moment. And we're regularly told that the shops are still piled high with skinnies for those who still like them, so wins all round as I see it (although you'd never guess that from reading this board!)

Pl242 · 03/01/2025 09:55

I think I struggle as I’m hourglass but have a tummy. So can see a fitted top works better with wide legged trousers but feel conscious of my tummy rolls!

But with a straight leg I can wear something semi fitted on top which covers the tummy a bit but accentuates my waist. They also make my bum look better. My bum is probably my best feature and is eclipsed by the wide legged trouser!

I can just about style my one pair. Tuck in a long sleeved t but have a shacket over. I still struggle with shoes but between motherhood, pandemic and wfh haven’t bought new shoes or boots for ages so need some new styles probably.

But to wear them more dressily is still a challenge. As a PP says I’m of average height but the length of many just swamp me and I still don’t think they suit those of us of shorter leg.

I can see why the skinny jeans haters are loving their moment! I wore my skinnies back in the day but have been a straight cut of jean girl for some years now, for better or worse.

I'm an apple shape so I absolutely love them for balancing out my too slim lower half. If I team with a slim jumper I look balanced.
I hated the skinny jean trend, no matter what I put on top, I look top heavy.
At the end of the day though, wear what you know feels right. Ski pants are meant to be making a comeback, I'm absolutely dreading that one!

How else can I tuck my 32 pairs of black leggings into my boots….ski pants do this perfectly! All hail the ski pant!
(but not those salopette type ones…it would be gross if they came into fashion!)

Floisme · 03/01/2025 10:02

I'm not even a skinny jeans hater, I was just thoroughly fed up with the lack of choice and with seeing them everywhere I went, day and night.

I agree, I think we can wear the shape that suits us as there are so many options.

MyNewLife2025 · 03/01/2025 10:03

Hopefully never.
That's tte only shape of trousers that fits me well.

I used to struggle like hell to find some at the height of the skinny craze. Dint want to go back to that. Thanks.

psuedocream3 · 03/01/2025 10:05

@netcam I like those on you, but in the website photo it's showing 3/4 length, which I can't get on board with. Again, what practical shoes can you wear with them that go well?

I really cant get on board with the chunky trainer trend either, so maybe that's why the wide leg isn't working for me.

CautiousLurker01 · 03/01/2025 10:07

I’m 55, 5ft 5, and have several pairs. They look great, especially with heels/high wedged boots, and are super comfy. Happy for them to stay for many years.

MyNewLife2025 · 03/01/2025 10:08

To the people saying that wide leg trousers are long so you have to wear heels…
Why are you not shortening them to the right length for you? It’s only a tenner and makes such a hige difference, incl on how well they fit you.

BurntBroccoli · 03/01/2025 10:11

Perhaps a skinny flare would suit you better? These seem to be in as well.

honeylulu · 03/01/2025 10:14

I think wide legged trousers look OK on most people if the length is right and worn with a fitted top. (Baggy top and wide legs look too pyjama-y.)

Barrel leg trousers are absolutely hideous though, who on earth dreamt up those monstrosities? I thought nothing could get worse than Mom jeans (makes even the slimmest ladies appear to have a flat, flabby arse and distended abdomen) but i was wrong.

The only problem i have with wide legs is I end up getting tangled and nearly tripping up if I come down the stairs in a rush!

Like other PPs bootleg jeans remain my fave. The Hollister ones are so soft and comfy.

They're full length on me at 5'3, they don't really look like they do on the model.

I wouldn't want them cropped either, but I have found that cropped or ankle length trousers often work for me as full length. Sometimes I find petite styles just a bit too short.

I have worn them with ankle boots, they are wide enough to cover the top of the boots. They are new and I've only worn them once so far.

Baileysatchristmas · 03/01/2025 10:17

I love a wide leg trouser! I'm only 5ft3 and I am a size 12, with big boobs and tummy rolls and they balance me out!

I wear chunky trainers or a heeled ankle boot with them.

arrigatto · 03/01/2025 10:18

I hope never too. So much comfier and more flattering for a pear shape

BurntBroccoli · 03/01/2025 10:20

I wear my wide legs with a long baggy jumper and trainers. It works somehow!

Trousers are black, jumper cream or camel coloured, very plain. Definitely doesn't look like pyjamas.

I've not yet managed to find a tailor who makes a good job of shortening jeans or trousers sadly.

Last time it cost me £30 to take 2 inches off and re-hem them and they just didn't look right or sit right. They were really baggy/flappy around the ankle.

The jeans I just bought are at least 6 inches too long so I'm not convinced it would be a £10 or that they would look/sit right.

Someone local did recommend another tailor but it's a 50 minute drive each way and they are not open on a weekend.

Have tried wonder Web years ago and didn't work with so much fabric to pin sadly.

devilspawn · 03/01/2025 10:35

I'm the same size as you but all my weight is in my thighs and bum so skinny jeans always made me look like a chicken. So glad they're gone.

Wide leg but not crazy wide I'm finding is good. Like just normal jeans how they used to be before they started messing with them. They don't look dated like skinnies and they don't trail in the rain mud and snow like flares.

Beginningtolookalot · 03/01/2025 10:38

Just wear what you like and suits you - I’ve only just bought my first pair of wide cut but have had boot cut first - is that an option ?

AuntieMarys · 03/01/2025 10:39

I love them but I'm 6 feet with35 inch i side legs!!

OublietteBravo · 03/01/2025 10:42

I like wide leg trousers. I just wish I could find some that weren’t high waisted! Who wants their waistband to almost touch their bra? I really miss low rise trousers. I’m hoping they will make a comeback along with the 90s nostalgia.

I honestly hate attitudes like this - “under 25”. Ffs.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 03/01/2025 10:54

I love mine, and find there’s a great choice in trouser shapes just now. Skinnies did nothing for me. There are some terrible wide legs out there though, you have to find the right ones for you. I wear mine with trainers or a pointy ankle boot. I’ve got a brilliant pair from Oliver Bonas from a couple of years ago that can be dressed up or down. I wouldn’t wear my wide leg jeans on a really horrible rainy day though, at this time of year I stick to a slightly cropped baggier style that works with boots or trainers instead.

CharlotteCChapel · 03/01/2025 10:58

I love wide leg trousers, I'm reasonably tall so they fall nicely. What I don't like are the palaxxo pant styles I have tripped over these in the past and ended up with a badly grazed knee.

Bananaram · 03/01/2025 11:09

They probably look awful on me (5ft8 size 18-20) but honestly they are so comfy I don't really care. I imagine I look casually sophisticated when in real life I probably look like a crazy bag lady. But I can no longer hack uncomfortable jeans that make me look like an overstuffed sausage so my wide leg trousers are staying 😁
