I usually wear number 7 hydra luminous. I used to wear a matte more full coverage no 7 but swapped a while back as I wanted something lighter. I now think I need something better. Do I need to spend loads more on something like EL or do I just go back to no 7 and choose something different? I am 50, fair skinned with dark hair and my skin is quite dry especially cheeks, chin and forehead. I want to look more put together. What else are the basics which would make me look better? I am pretty clueless with make up tbh but am looking rather old and haggard which is making me rather fed up.

DW works for me but I think.because my skin is very oily.
You could go to a make up counter and get them to try things out on you?

Strangerthanfictions · 03/01/2025 01:59

I would say personally with dry skin double wear would be a hard no. I would stick with something luminous or soft matt, I like soft matt for my dry skin when I want to look quite made up, I love phoera and it's very cheap but also Dior and nars, generally though I like a luminous look And use Charlotte tilbury beautiful skin or trinny bff tinted. I also bought L'Oreal serum true match and the regular true match and they are both excellent, I like the chanel gel one as well but quite hard to get the hang of!!

I have Lancome teint idole ultra wear which is lighter than ELDW, I wear it over Nivea creme (blue tin) my skin is dry and the odd wrinkle. It's not my favourite foundation but has a nice medium cover. I also have Lancome tient miracle which is nice but not as moisturising as I'd expect. I think my favourite all rounder foundation is Clinique Even Better and Even Better Glow. They're not matte but leave a nice finish. For concealer around my eyes and nose I use No7 luminous.

BusterGonad · 03/01/2025 07:32

Sorry, I mean No7 Hydraluminous dark circle corrector. I did have ELDW but I never used it, it was hard to blend and dry and mask like.

Happycow · 03/01/2025 07:52

ELDW will collect in any dry skin and just look awful . Your skin sounds like mine although I'm a decade younger but still DW collects in the fine lines.

I use Trinny BBF alone or as a base under EL HydraQuench which is a lighter coverage than DW but buildable and kinder on dry skin

usernother · 03/01/2025 08:06

I'd mix the DW with the hydra luminous and see how you get on doing that first. I often mix foundations, mostly to get the right shade.

I just bought a Bobbie brown tint and it's amazing. I was genuinely shocked when the woman at the counter showed me in the mirror as I was getting ready to politely say oh how nice 🤣 I also use Charlotte tilbury for blush and highlights.

BusterGonad · 03/01/2025 15:32

I didn't fully answer your question. My basics are a cream blusher, pink or plummy pink, a creamy lipstick (l'oréal in the gold bullet) In a Mauve sharde. A brown eyebrow powder or taupe pencil. Taupe micro shimmer eyehdow, Chanel are excellent for this or Dior, I find matte shows up every wrinkle and just looks flat.

WhoWhereWhatWhy · 03/01/2025 15:34

Clinique even better is a medium coverage foundation but the consistency is light. Loads of colours. I have dry skin and I’ve used it ever since EL stopped doing double wear light. I’m 49.

cansu · 03/01/2025 18:05

Thank you so much for all your recommendations. I will look them up and see how I go.

Try EL futurist - it's fuller coverage but hydrating

DoreenCorkhill · 03/01/2025 19:43

I love Hydro Luminous and I have worn Chanel Dior Armani ....you name it I have probably tried the foundation! I honestly think its the best .I'm 57 dryish skin but I use a moisturiser then either a Charlotte Tilbury primer on top then my Hydro Luminous or on a more casual day I use the Beauty Pie SPF 50 under it .

I think the addition of these products makes HL more glowy and longer lasting and less patchy .Also I put less on than I need then build up on areas I feel I need more coverage .

For what its worth I have tried double wear and its one of my least favourite foundations orangey tones and felt cakey and dated for me.

I hope that helps -maybe you just need to try a primer with your HL or using a different application ? Have you tried applying with a damp sponge ?

MessyNDepressy · 03/01/2025 20:05

I previously used EL DW religiously but felt as I started to get older it looked cakey and settled in fine lines. After buying so many different, expensive foundations, I started using Maybelline Superstay Skintint and have never used anything since. Stays on all day with a little setting powder, isn’t heavy but still gives a coverage and is so much cheaper than DW.

IBlameYourMother · 03/01/2025 20:22

L’Oréal serum true match is lovely and dewy on my dry skin.

suki1964 · 04/01/2025 00:59

You probably need to focus on your skin, making sure you are moisturising well and using a primer , really does help with giving the face luminosity

rewilded · 04/01/2025 01:05

I have dry skin and mix ELDW with various TMs. I try other things but always go back as the coverage is so good with DW and lifts my skin. I tend to use a few dabs and then apply a TM with a primer for lines underneath.

I also use nivea - the body and face thick cream, anything else makes my skin too dry.

GreyBlackBay · 04/01/2025 01:08

I'm quite new to DW and agree it's quite dry but my god it stays put. That alone has made me persevere - regular exfoliation, good moisturiser and primer, a light touch with the DW and a very light covering of a more luminous powder.

And the bottle lasts forever, 9 months compared to one a month of my no 7.

Get a sample to try, they gave me a tiny bottle that lasted for weeks so I gave it a good go.

Rina66 · 04/01/2025 07:31

I apply a little bit of my DW with a flat top buffing brush, I then use Iconic Super Blurring Skin Tint (this is excellent) on top, again buffing it in to blend the two. I like Morphe or Real Techniques brushes, when you buff it in it blends with your skin until it's barely there, so much better than the paint brush style foundation brushes.

Was a DW devotee for years but as I approached 40 my skin just did not like it at all anymore. Too drying, mask looking and settled in every tiny line.
Danessa Myricks yummy skin is my go to now due to my dry and dehydrated skin. It gives me a luminosity and fresher look.
