I want to be a red lipstick person.
Please help.
I like the look where you apply it and then sort of diffuse it to the edge of the lip.
Matt.
Blue red preferred.

Any suggestions?

Red lipstick is my specialist subject - Lisa Eldridge Velvet Ribbon would fit your brief.

WildFlowerBees · 24/12/2024 17:35

Dior Rouge velvet in 999 or 866 which is a cool blue red. Both lovely.

You need Lisa Eldridge for advice on both choosing a colour and getting the look that you want. I would start here:

Also be prepared to lose three hours of your life on her fab content.

Ooh thank you! The first look is the one I'm after

My first thought was also Velvet Ribbon by Lisa Eldridge but if you want the diffused look, I tend to prefer a liquid lipstick just applied on the inside and then teased out with brush or finger. Maybelline Superstar Matte Ink in Pioneer is a decent one, it's a blue based red that leans slightly pink but that makes it a good one to lean into the red lip universe with at a reasonable price.

Hourglass also do a nice blue based liquid lipstick that's a bit deeper and more true red, named Icon which is a really great colour but IME that touch of pink in the colour works better when diffused as it's closer to your lip colour so the transition is a bit more natural.

Charlotte Tilbury Red Carpet Red is a beautiful, perfect shade of red

Well, I came to say Lisa Eldridge, but I see I've been roundly beaten to it!

Oblomov24 · 24/12/2024 19:23

I need to buy one for my friend.

999 dior is the best colour. I like the velvet lipstick that lasts and lasts. They do a lip stain version too.

I'm going to try 866 next. The cases are lovely and have magnetic closing.

If you want an every day red Velvet Rain by Lisa Eldridge is really gorgeous.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 24/12/2024 20:15

I’m here for the cheap recommendations.

Beauty Pie have some lovely Matte red lipsticks at the moment. Very easy to wear, leave a stain with the first coat, and then a deeper stain with the second one.

These are the ones I use the most now. I do have lots of Chanel and Lisa Eldridge, but the matte BP are much easier to wear.

I so want to wear red lipstick. But I'm 54 and it just makes me look like I'm in drag! How do I get it right?

Houseplanter · 24/12/2024 20:41

I think red lipstick is the one thing you really need to get the undertones right with.

Some have blue undertones and make me look very Morticia.. those with orange (?) undertones suit me much more.

If the colour overwhelms even when the rest of your makeup is pared back and you don't have much natural contrast in your features and/or colouring, I'd suggest using a lipliner that you soften inwards and then top with a sheer red lipstick. A lightly applied satin lipstick might work too but a sheer lipstick is easier. Burt's Bee do nice ones.

Thanks for the advice. I've ordered 2 for my friends birthday.

Lisa Eldridge does Ribbon in Velveteen liquid as well, if you're interested in a different formula.

I'd go with Lisa Eldridge products every day, but for a comparison there's always Ruby Woo (MAC).

Frieda12 · 25/12/2024 16:52

MAC Russian Red is a good one you can wear full on or blot down

cuteyfluff · 25/12/2024 16:56

Thanks all I'm going for velvet ribbon x
