Makeup help for 68 year old starting to fall apart - lip liner, eyeliner and under eye bag concealer!

Good morning. I am desperately in need of help! It's so easy to get sucked in by the advertising, and I don't want to buy a product that doesn't work! I am pretty happy with my looks - I made the best of what I have but wish I was taller, I am just under 5 foot. Most people used to think I was at least 5 years younger or more. Not so much now! Nowadays, when I look in the mirror with my glasses on, I am pretty shocked. I am OK with my foundation and mascara - Clinique and also my lip colour - Maybelline 24-hour colour, BUT my lips have those awful lip bleed lines, and I have always had under eye bags. I don't mind paying for a great product, but so many are disappointing. I am not good with eyeliner, but I like a bit of subtle definition. So far, I haven't found an eyeliner pen I can use. Was tempted by Victoria Beckhams kajal pencil. Any advice would be gratefully received. I know I can't expect miracles, but I am sure you can give me some great advice.

I have a Charlotte Tilbury lip liner which is nice an neutral so goes with any lipstick.

As someone heading for your age have you checked the colours still suit you. You remember Barbara Cartland? or Fanny Craddock.

It sounds as if your eyebags are genetic so there's probably not a lot you can do short of concealer.

Azuresky68 · 12/12/2024 09:50

😅😅...yes I get what you are saying but I am pretty good on makeup when I find the right product. Re the eyebags I agree with you. I went for a consultation with a highly recommended surgeon to get them done but I was too scared 😱

@GettingStuffed regarding Charlotte Tilbury did you see her on Lorraine...I saw a clip on social media. Sadly her own makeup didn't look great. Sorry for being negative but but it put me off her products.

Clinique black honey might be what you're after

MinnieCauldwell · 12/12/2024 09:58

I have found less is more at this age; completely given up on eye and lip liner. Eye lids too loose to effectively have a liner, I use a very neutral lip stick and have switched from foundation to tinted Sisley moisturiser. Cream blushers now work better than powder bluster and concealer can now also cake a bit so have not used for a while.

Garlicwest · 12/12/2024 10:09

I agree with @MinnieCauldwell about much lighter foundation (or no foundation) now. Instead, I've acquired a small collection of primers; my favourite's the Elf poreless putty: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0C7WQ9GG5

I also use a shimmery 'illuminating' primer, then apply concealer and/or foundation only where I need it. I'm having to use more of the correct tools now - a sponge and foundation brushes - instead of just spreading it with my fingers, as this lightweight approach requires proper blending.

I really hate pale or neutral lip shades on me, and do have to use a lip liner pencil now. I still get a fuzzy outline because of all the wrinkles, but at least I can help the lipstick stay in the right place!

I’m 53. I tight line my upper eye lids (from underneath) and this concealer is much better than more expensive ones I’ve tried. It doesn’t appear to be in shops though. I don’t use lipliner. As @MinnieCauldwell says less is more but sometimes I do glittery eyeshadow, Stila Kitten is a nice bright one.

Your 24 hour lipstick will very much be drying out your lips so I'd avoid those from now on

MinnieCauldwell · 12/12/2024 10:26

@Garlicwest Yes! Forget to mention, I now use a pore primer for a more even base. My lips so far are ok, but bloody hell, my eyebrows are awful, two thirds disappeared and hate that drawn on eyebrow look.

MinnieCauldwell · 12/12/2024 10:29

Also struggling with eye shadow, looking for something quite neutral to just cover the kids with a little cover, glittery sits in my wrinkles...

MinnieCauldwell · 12/12/2024 10:30

Oops, kids not kids...

I quite like Stila Suede Shade liquid eye shadow.

Jellycoconut · 12/12/2024 10:42

I struggle with eye liner on upper lids as it drags the loose skin. I've moved to using a matt eye shadow in mid brown and using an angled brush to stipple it on in eyeliner shape.

I was going to suggest similar,I use the Labello blackberry shine which is a great dupe and it's really nice on aging lips (which I'm familiar with 🙄)

I'm started following a women on YouTube I don't remember her name, but she has a video Boujie on a Budget where she uses Elf products. I went right out and bought the lot. Haloglow on its own makes a massive difference available on Amazon and probably Boots Super drug etc.

I use AYU liner on my upper water line now and have stopped using liner on eye lids, you definitely have to adjust your make up,don't you ?

I love Victoria Beckham kajal pencils. The sparkly colours are perfect for winter evening. I've just bought a lipstick from this range too which I'm pleased with.

My other brand is Jones Road. I love it all!

I've just started using ELF eyebrow mascara and their make up remover balm and moisturiser , so impressed and I'm happy to spend a lot on luxury products but am usually disappointed.

I like the sound of powder bluster.

Wow..thanks so much for the replies. I totally agree less is more. I have always been interested in makeup and have tried many brands, from Dior to ELF0⁰ but trying not to get sucked into buying out of desperation as I know it's not going to take 10 years off me!

I always use gloss on top but if you have any recommendations that's great...finding the right colour can be a challenge.

@Garlicwest thank you. Do you have a favourite lip liner?
