I need somewhere to vent this!

I've been getting my hair cut by the same person for years. I've always asked for a blunt cut, no layers because I don't like them, and I've always come away happy. Got to my appointment today and asked for the same cut as usual, but I've come away with layers all over! By the time I realised what was happening it was too late.

Words can't express how much I hate the things. My hair has a wave to it so if I have layers the ends flick about all over the place and the back ends up looking like a total mess. When I got home I wet it and spent half an hour with a hotbrush trying to get it to sit straight, but 5 seconds later it was flicking in all directions and mushrooming into the hair of Gail Platt. I can't use straighteners on it because they make it look even worse, and I can't have the layers cut out because it's already quite short so to get it blunt would mean having it chin length which I don't want either.

I know it's only hair and it will grow but I've had such a shit week and I'm crying 😳 Is there anything that can be done about them? Is it worth me going back and asking if they can be 'blended' or something or is that only going to make it worse?

OP, I'm rewally sorry. It's so upsetting.

I WOULD go back though. The layers could be cut in a different way so as ti make it easier to use a straightener, for example. Or yo ucould lose a tiny bit more of the length to get the layers closer together. It's not okay that this happened.

Sorry OP, it’s very upsetting when you have a bad haircut. You go to try and improve your appearance and it feels like the opposite effect.

When my hair is cut, it takes a few days for it to get used to it especially if weight has been taken out so you might find it settles down a bit.

Your hair sounds like it must still be quite long so it sounds like some evening up could be done. I’ve had some short haircuts including one at the moment I’m not entirely sure about and then I just have to wait for it to grow. But it always does!

Also remember no one else will even notice, too busy worrying about their own hair.

While the layers are growing out you can bunch hair in a bun or low ponytail and the layers can soften the face, it’s not the worst cut to get for growing out. Do you have a fringe? That can blend into a layer cut and then all of it can grow out quite nicely but look stylish with hair framing the face.

There aren't any layers at the front, it's all towards the back which is the worst as that's where the wave is most stubborn, and I also have cowlicks at the nape and crown. I've woken up this morning and it looks really awful, the back is sticking out in all different directions and I've been crying again Sad

I don't have any kind of fringe so it would look very harsh in a low ponytail, and there's not enough for any kind of updo. I've had almost this exact cut done on my hair years ago, by another hairdresser, and it was horrible to grow out. I'm going to have to wet it and re style it with the hot brush every day which is frustrating as I've got limited mobility in my shoulder.

I've emailed my hairdresser this morning but I'm not sure there's going to be much he can do Sad

I have quite a bit of wave in my hair and when it goes wrong, I just do it in easy updos - a Greek style one with it all tucked into a headband is super quick and works on your length plus layers:

Also a low twist on each side finishing in a pony at the back is less than a minute. There's loads of good ideas on Youtube.

LetThereBeLove · 12/12/2024 10:11

I'd seriously lose a bit of length to lessen the layers. It will soon grow back to the length you want it. Your hairdresser should do this for free.
I've noticed if I don't say at every session the hairdresser will do things I don't want. They need constant reminders!

OOP, I know this isn't what you want to hear, but I think it looks quite nice! But you don't like it so that's the key thing.

I think he could get more blunt with it in a couple of ways - make it a bit shorter at the back then longer towards the front but much more close to one length. Or I think if he just took maybe half an inch off, the layers would be a lot less noticeable. He could also do that thing where the layers that are there are cut sort of inwards rather than out - so they're mor elikely to lay flat?

It’s certainly not what I was expecting to hear Grin thank you. I hate the look SO much so it’s difficult for me to see past it, to me it just looks like someone hacked at it with shears or like I’ve been in a fire. He’s a very good hairdresser, he’s the style director at a fancy salon, so I’m hoping he can help make it less unruly. I’m conscious that if it’s much shorter at the back then the whole thing might stick out like a ski slope as this is what’s happened previously when it’s been that kind of length.

After all my meticulous blow drying I’ve come out and it’s raining!

They should refund you

You asked for the opposite

it cements my view that no hairdresser listens now

I’m hoping they will, or at least do the next one for free. It was £85. Sad

The side layers! What did they do?

Go back and demand they fix it. Was he too busy chatting??
