Is this still a big no no?

It was never a yes, and unless the world implodes never will be.

It really depends on the outfit, tights and shoes themselves, as well as your personal style.

Tights and open toed sandals have been making a comeback in the past few years, as well as sheer funky socks and open toed sandals.

If you're looking for an edgier more fashion forward look then I'd say go for it. But in my opinion tights and sandals work best if:

  • both the tights and sandals are black (or the same colour - but be careful with this!) so they blend together and create the illusion of a seamless longer leg.
  • the tights do NOT have a reinforced toe
  • the sandals are best when they're a chunky platform and not too strappy or 'busy'.
  • the dress / skirt is short or midi length at the most.
  • the inner sole of the sandal is the same colour as the shoe. It would look awful wearing black tights and a black platform sandal if the inner sole of the sandal was a light colour and could be seen peeking out.
  • the outfit should look elevated / fashion forward when paired with the tights & shoes. Obviously this is subjective, but trying the outfit on with the tights and shoes and assessing in the mirror should give you a general idea.

Don't wear sheer nude or thick school looking tights.

Thank you - they were patterned tights but I've just tried the outfit on and it actually looked better without tights anyway.

Wrong. It was and is a yes. See Sarah Jessica Parker, Alexa Chung and Victoria Beckham.

I think it can look great when done as advised above.
