Are black opaque nylons really frumpy fashion?

I read an article in the Guardian on Saturday that stated that black 40/60D hoisiery is "out" and fancy colours and lacey ones are "in" for the party season. The statement was backed up with statistics of sales growth of colourful nylons and lacey ones with a decline of sales in 40/60D black.
I Google researched more and found that this ditching of classic black extends to the workplace and social settings. Looking around my office and offices of clients I visit, I'm shocked to find that I'm almost the only "frump" in standard class opaque black legs.
I can't bring myself to go jazzy colours or lacey. I had a big clearout of my tights draw about a month ago - ironically in my vast collection I had old red, navy, green (why?) and lacey tights (mostly unworn) - they got chucked. Those still in packets and unworn are now in the local Scope shop - maybe I should buy them back.
I'm extra miffed because the clearout coincided with a £150 spending spree on good quality black opaques.
Maybe I should buy trousers and never wear tights again.
Am I the last living fan of black opaques? - I think they are sexy, stylish, warm and practical.
What next - shoes out and only boots?

Not that it should dictate what you wear, but I think it’s fair to say that high denier black opaque tights aren’t “in fashion”. They are so useful and inoffensive that they will stick around though - a bit like skinny jeans.

I’d personally feel a bit outdated wearing them now, mainly because I was practically welded to them in the mid to late 00’s. Pretty much wore daily/nightly with miniskirts and dresses.

I’d feel a bit better in a lower denier, maybe 20-30, pair now. But I wouldn’t be bold enough for patterns (always go wonky) or colour (definitely not for me).

Click care less. I' bought some
Black sheers last week in the interests of looking more modern. They made my legs look enormous (which they actually are not). So that's me out and back in my lovely 100 denier opaques that make my legs look great!

Genuine question from a man who knows nothing about these things, who is also not a pervert or crossdresser or transsexual etc. Why are tights and stockings so important to you ladies ? Seriously, to me they all look the same (apart from the brightly coloured ones that few seem to wear) and perform a rather basic function. How can one pair of tights make for a cool look and another equal frumpiness? I don't get it. For me at least there isn't a male counterpart or equivalent.

I shall now stand by to be shot down.

Fashion I guess, opaques look very different to barely black thin denier tights. Which both look very different to nude colour tights.

20 years ago nudes we’re more fashionable, then they weren’t. Then they made a slight resurgence probably due to Kate Middleton wearing them??

As a wearer of opaque tights, black and otherwise, I agree with you.

The article in The Guardian doesn't even say there's anything wrong with black opaques. It was a suggestion that other colours are available.

As to whether tights are "frumpy", I'm not inclined to take styling advice from anyone using the word "frumpy"

Very little, however, looks as daft as bare legs in winter; except possibly shoes or trainers with trousers and bare ankles and those teeny "no show" socks. Oddly men seem to have no problem with putting proper socks on when it's cold.

@TheTecknician Women's fashion runs on a complex language of uncodified semiotic signals. Every denier of tight has a hidden meaning that can be used to tell other women information about yourself. For example if I see someone in Kate Middleton-style nude tights I assume they are quite right wing and probably voted for Brexit.

mrpinkwhistlescat · 12/12/2024 16:06

I don’t think anyone could wear green tights without looking like a tree in a school play.

All the Year 4 elves in my son's school play were giving me Zooey Deschanel 2010 flashbacks.

Maybe you should examine your own narrow minded prejudices. I'm assuming you were a Remainer? So was I but posts like this make me want to distance myself from remainers.

The article isn't even saying black opaques are "frumpy" or unwearable- just that for party wear coloured tights are an option- which they always were. I like and wear coloured tights.

How I hate the word "frumpy" (and its ugly sister "flattering")

Edited

Yes, yes and thrice yes to frumpy and flattering. The other sister is called Miss Ogyny.

This is ridiculous.

Some women choose to read meaning - that doesn’t mean their assumptions are fair or reasonable. They’re just tights.

TheTecknician · 12/12/2024 17:41

I never expected tights to be capable of expressing a political statement.

booisbooming · 12/12/2024 18:04

I'm deadly serious. I'm wearing black opaques which means I am a sincere person incapable of irony or sarcasm.

Thank goodness for that. You had me fooled for a moment. Some of the shite that's spouted on here made me assume the worst. Cry pardon.

Meanwhile, I'm wearing little fishnet ankle socks. It probably means I'm a sarky old cow with menopausal rage, who's trying to pretend she's still nineteen.

Noodlecat · 12/12/2024 20:46

Do you really care what other people or “the media” thinks? Go with what you like and know.

TheTwirlyPoos · 12/12/2024 21:00

I obviously missed he memo. I shall continue to wear mine happily!

Workisntworking · 12/12/2024 23:39

As a lover of colourful and/or patterned tights this makes me very happy. I thought they were actually rather old-hat so I'm pleased to be back in fashion!
