Are black opaque nylons really frumpy fashion?

I read an article in the Guardian on Saturday that stated that black 40/60D hoisiery is "out" and fancy colours and lacey ones are "in" for the party season. The statement was backed up with statistics of sales growth of colourful nylons and lacey ones with a decline of sales in 40/60D black.
I Google researched more and found that this ditching of classic black extends to the workplace and social settings. Looking around my office and offices of clients I visit, I'm shocked to find that I'm almost the only "frump" in standard class opaque black legs.
I can't bring myself to go jazzy colours or lacey. I had a big clearout of my tights draw about a month ago - ironically in my vast collection I had old red, navy, green (why?) and lacey tights (mostly unworn) - they got chucked. Those still in packets and unworn are now in the local Scope shop - maybe I should buy them back.
I'm extra miffed because the clearout coincided with a £150 spending spree on good quality black opaques.
Maybe I should buy trousers and never wear tights again.
Am I the last living fan of black opaques? - I think they are sexy, stylish, warm and practical.
What next - shoes out and only boots?

Am I the only one who thinks these make your legs look hairy from a distance?

I don't think they're frumpy but they don't suit me because I'm small and thin and they make my legs look thinner and not attractive. I wear lacy tights because they add a bit of glamour to my winter clothes, suit my legs and they're more hard-wearing than thinner deniers. They're not easy to find though. I tried some M&S age 13-14 cable school tights because they had them on Ocado and they seem to have been made for giraffes. Very hard to get on and come up to my boobs!

Yes, you are. They don't.

Thick black tights are warm & cosy in the coldness of winter. I have several pairs and have just ordered more.
I would prefer to have a wider colour choice other than the standard black, grey or navy, Perhaps a tan or flesh colour as well ?

Mmhmmn · 10/12/2024 00:16

Couldn’t give a single fuck what’s fashionable. As long as they hold up in right places I think black opaques make legs look nice 👌🏼 will continue to wear!

Sussurations · 10/12/2024 01:02

It depends on your legs, surely? Mine are stumpy and I love black opaques and will never relinquish them.

Coloured tights look too medieval and I don’t like lace or patterns, but sheer black or glittery are fab if you have the legs for it.

I'm well over a 10. I have cable knit tights. Probably Marks and Sparks.

Try Cosyfeet for winter tights; I'm a size 22 and their Large size are a perfect fit for my [hysique, so you should be able to find something suitable there.

Oh I hope not. I went from black wooly tights in high school to black opaques and I've never looked back. I did have a couple of thick lacy pairs. As lacy tights are the 80s surely opaques are on trend?

No one wants to see my legs at my age in bright tights ...

Your use of the word nylons is more ageing than any opaques ever would!

I think patterned tights seem to be in, eg polka dot etc, based on me looking at fashionable 20-somethings around me in London.

I haven't heard them called 'nylons' since the 60s.

I don't particularly care about looking frumpy in my black opaque tights but, it appears, on this occasion I might be ahead of the curve as I have drawers full of colourful or patterned tights. If you have seen Joy on Netflix note Jean Purdy's thick tights although I wouldn't necessarily wear them with those shoes.

Goodness I hope not! I consider my 60 denier quite racy, compared to my usual 100s!

Lacy ones are of course nicer in a way, but alas not on me any longer, as they just segregate my fat legs into what looks like an assortment of oddly shaped sausages 😅 Cold too.

I am chunky of leg and wear a pair of neutral tights as a base layer under the lacy ones to stop bits of my leg poking through. Makes them a bit warmer too.

BestIsWest · 10/12/2024 08:34

I was devoted to lacy, patterned and sheer tights in my youth. As someone said up thread, expensive habit. The advent of opaques (late 80s?) was revolutionary and I’ll remain devoted to them as long as I wear a skirt.

Quite fancy a glittery pair though.

CaptainMyCaptain · 10/12/2024 09:06

I have a pair of black tights with a diamonte studded tigers on the side of the ankle. I found them in a bargain bin at least 20 years ago and have never worn them. One day the occasion will arise ...

henlake7 · 10/12/2024 09:15

I love black opaques for spring and autumn. I have horrendous varicose veins so my legs arent fit for public viewing....come the colder weather though I can get my opaque tights out and wear all my mini skirts and knee length dresses that I cant wear in summer.

Too cold now though. I have defaulted to Primark fur lined leggings. Better then opaque tights IMO!
Much warmer and come in lots of colours (I have black, dark blue, sage green, taupe, chocolate and burgundy).

🤯 Thanks for the tip!

notacooldad · 10/12/2024 09:20

Whether opaque are in or not I'm continuing to wear mine with my Dr Marten's Mary Janes and long skirts and midi dressess throughout the winter season!

Moveoverdarlin · 10/12/2024 10:10

I rarely wear tights but I have a few fancy dos coming up and I’m ditching thick black tights for much more sheer ones this year.

Those sound amazing. Right up my alley!!

poppymango · 10/12/2024 11:01

I’m sticking with simple black… I made the mistake of wearing funky tights a few years ago (little polka dots, very cute I thought) but when I saw some pictures of myself I realised they had the effect of making my legs look unusually plump. Some sort of optical illusion but very unflattering.

There are certain trends I have to quietly ignore!

pippitypoppitypoo · 10/12/2024 11:31

Wearing my black frumpy nylons today with pride! ✊

KindLemur · 10/12/2024 12:45

All these coloured tights with dresses are making me think of the girl and The Saturdays with their black lipsy dresses, patent courts and black mini dresses, the peak of 00s fashion for teenage girls 😂 as a millennial I see it’s trendy but it just makes me cringe. Although I prefer bare legs over anything so what do I know

FiveTreeHill · 10/12/2024 12:53

More sheer tights are in and tights like the lacy/diamond pattern

But I think this is a microtrend, it will be over by next winter at the latest. I wouldn't bother buying for the sake of a trend unless it's something you wore previously as they will only go to waste

ghostfacethriller · 10/12/2024 16:22

The very idea! How could any classic black apparel be 'out'? 😂 Style is eternal, darling. 😉

MumWifeOther · 10/12/2024 16:43

Sheer tights are “in” at the moment. So long as you have the legs for them 🙂

MrHouse · 10/12/2024 17:21

Bloke's perspective: Black tights are classic and never look bad.

Opaque tights of any other colour make you look like a children's librarian.

NunyaBeeswax · 09/12/2024 19:43

Didn't they go a bit viral at one point?

Sheer looking but full opaque tights... with patterns...
Are they a thing? 🤔

Has anyone seen any of these. I’ve been looking for a pair…
