Are black opaque nylons really frumpy fashion?

I read an article in the Guardian on Saturday that stated that black 40/60D hoisiery is "out" and fancy colours and lacey ones are "in" for the party season. The statement was backed up with statistics of sales growth of colourful nylons and lacey ones with a decline of sales in 40/60D black.
I Google researched more and found that this ditching of classic black extends to the workplace and social settings. Looking around my office and offices of clients I visit, I'm shocked to find that I'm almost the only "frump" in standard class opaque black legs.
I can't bring myself to go jazzy colours or lacey. I had a big clearout of my tights draw about a month ago - ironically in my vast collection I had old red, navy, green (why?) and lacey tights (mostly unworn) - they got chucked. Those still in packets and unworn are now in the local Scope shop - maybe I should buy them back.
I'm extra miffed because the clearout coincided with a £150 spending spree on good quality black opaques.
Maybe I should buy trousers and never wear tights again.
Am I the last living fan of black opaques? - I think they are sexy, stylish, warm and practical.
What next - shoes out and only boots?

Back again, are they? I worked for a boot company for 10 years and remember wearing a black knitted dress, purple tights and black over the knee boots in 2011!

Mid 90s purple jumper, black skirt and purple tights. My very gay line manager said I was a splendid lady bishop

QuimReaper · 09/12/2024 21:14

'Nylons' 😁😍

LadyChilli · 09/12/2024 21:23

I love "nylons", it makes me think of my Canadian friends as that's the word they all use.

Those patterned tights are gorgeous. I am going to get some asap. I'm 48 but don't care.

Littleguggi · 09/12/2024 21:24

I wear black 40/60D on a daily basis in the winter, although I did recently purchase black 15D to wear to a party. I never understand what colour shoes you're supposed to wear with coloured tights?

Cast your mind back to magazines aimed at teen girls. "Only shampoo your hair in a downwards motion to stop split ends"... "Applying out free sample of lip gloss and laughing a lot in conversations lets him know you fancy him!" ... "Eating Weetabix and apples to drop a stone for the holidays". .. "Pedal pushers and ruched tops are the only In Thing this year".

Then, years later, all the writers admitted that they quite literally just made up any old bollocks to fill the pages.

This tights debacle is the same, except it's aimed at a different demographic.

Eight billion people on earth, probably 0.000000000000000000001% of a percent would give a shit about which tights anyone's wearing ❤️

I used to be partial to a stripy tight in my goth days. The thinner stripes were more flattering, but I was still channelling Grotbags.

Stripy tights under ripped jeans. Now that was a look.

I used to do lace tights under heavily ripped jeans, with a body and Woolworths PE pumps. Must’ve looked a proper sight!

Only wear 40 plus for work as so tired of ladders even ladder resist tights get ladders

TheCalmQuail · 09/12/2024 21:41

Nothing on this planet will convince me to ditch my 100 denier tights. Patterns are all good if you have slender pins, I am chunky of leg and they look bloody horrendous on me, often warping the patterns.

pippitypoppitypoo · 09/12/2024 21:42

Patterned tights were very in when I started work in the mid 2000s. I shan't be getting on board this time around! I can see that they might be a 'fun' way to jazz up a work party outfit but outside of that- unflattering and impractical. And I've only just come to terms with another article that said knee length skirts are frumpy 🤦🏽‍♀️ I'm pretty sure that by the time I'd accepted the need to adjust they'd be on their way out again!

As ever, I think it's a youth thing. Knee length skirts weren't frumpy on me in my 20s. Mainly because I was largely channelling Joan from Madmen. Knee length skirts on 40+ me don't have the same pizzazz.

Doggymummar · 09/12/2024 21:45

I have orange and burgundy for under my grey jumper dress, otherwise I have the 200 denier fleece lined ones from Amazon and Heist nudes for evening. Ordered some glittery ones, yet to arrive.

CandyStripedCottonBedsheet · 09/12/2024 21:50

@doggymummar what are these glittery tights of which ye speak? They sound interesting

TheTecknician · 09/12/2024 21:50

Is the term 'pantyhose' allowed here?

KitsyWitsy · 09/12/2024 21:54

I’m wearing black opaques now. Love them. However, I’ve been wearing some lacy and patterned tights lately. Mostly black.

I'm planning on getting some of those glittery ones.

So, what, 1 quadrillionth of a person?

I think you may not be cut out for either mathematics or the S&B board.

shrinkingthiswinter · 09/12/2024 22:11

Wow those patterned tights took me straight back to 2003

Notellinganyone · 09/12/2024 22:12

I live in these in winter. I spent £150 on five pairs of Wolfords in September and have no intention of changing to anything else.

WhatterySquash · 09/12/2024 22:12

Yes my only objection to 40/60D is that's nowhere near opaque enough! I love thick/woolly opaques and I don't think they're out of fashion/style at all – they're everywhere in most shops' model pics shown with boots, dresses, minis etc. I might vary it with dark grey or a bit of sparkle but don't like most colours for tights (despite loving colour generally).

I remember in the late 80s at university, a well-meaning but very old-school male friend lamenting "industrial" black opaque tights for not showing him women's legs sufficiently. Fuck off I thought, I'm never parting from mine.

As for Grotbags – absolute icon. The older I get the more I appreciate how fabulous she was.

TowerBallroom · 09/12/2024 22:15

I'm wearing black ones with a lovely thermal lining.
They reach right under my tits
Fiuck what's in fashion!

150 on tights 😱😱😱
mine are primarni and absolutely fine for work….I do need to size down but other than that no issues For going out last week I bought a 10 quid pretty poly aubergine coloured pair…..and I thought that was outrageous!

TunipTheVegimal24 · 09/12/2024 22:25

Goodness I hope not! I consider my 60 denier quite racy, compared to my usual 100s!

Lacy ones are of course nicer in a way, but alas not on me any longer, as they just segregate my fat legs into what looks like an assortment of oddly shaped sausages 😅 Cold too.

PinkTonic · 09/12/2024 22:44

I’ve done the rounds of tights fashion at least twice. I’m happy to see sheer black back and I love a patterned pair. I’ve been wondering if the embellished ones of the 80s are ever coming back. Bows on the back, diamanté on the ankle…just right with a curly perm and a massive set of shoulder pads…perhaps not!
