Hello,
I've gone and fallen in love with the Piglet in Bed quilted housecoat but it's £200! Does anyone have any alternative recommendations for a good quality, plain (no pattern), quilted but stylish housecoat? I remember laughing with my cousins at my lovely nanna's quilted housecoat but now I see why she wore one!

Thanks All!

Dressing gowns are called housecoats in Scotland.

It's got a pattern, but I'm currently coveting one of these: pinklemons.boutique/products/quilted-dressing-gown

That's like my seasalt Pottering Gown which I love .

I made a mistake of googling that one. It is so beautiful and so tempting 😍 why did I open this thread 😩

HotCrossBunplease · 11/12/2024 00:34

@Feebeela price appears to have dropped to £149!

These two are what I would think of as a “housecoat”. The orange one is fab. I had a child’s version of the pink one as a 1970s kid.

This is the 'housecoat' in question. I could see myself drinking coffee and reading the papers in this on a Sunday but would prefer not to spend £200!! Anyone got any cheaper ideas? TIA

It's currently on sale at £149 if that helps OP!

KristieLambert · 11/12/2024 02:31

These are all good suggestions, and they are very helpful to me. Thank you.

Tummelthecat · 11/12/2024 08:11

Your preferred option is now down to £149 if that helps. Still expensive but if you wear it every day….

If they indeed picked it up, they should have offered to sent one for free to the OP, since she definitely boosted their sales witn this thread.
I've never heard of them before and I ended up checking out all their products...

I think that one looks great! I think we’re missing a trick by just saying they’re ‘naff’ - warm, protects your clothes from stains, looks smart enough to not feel embarrassed if answering the door - bring back the housecoat I say!

Tontostitis · 11/12/2024 09:10

Not to boast but I cut up a Forever England quilt and made my own. I used a quite expensive but very simple pattern and am now on my 4th one as people keep giving me quilts to make more.

Housecoat = Dressing gown.

They are two terms for the same thing.

No, a housecoat is more of an apron and was used by housewives decades ago to put over their ordinary clothes when they were doing the cleaning.

toenails · 11/12/2024 09:59

Maybe not at all what you're looking for but I have this and love it:

Indian Handmade Kantha Jacket, 100% Cotton Kimono, Cotton Bath Robe, Gift for Her, Dressing Gown, Beach Wear Kimono - Etsy UK

You have to get the 'long' version for the contrast collar.

Button through ones are so much nicer than the wrap round ones with tie belts which usually look very untidy and make me look overweight - especially the ones made out of towelling or thick fleece which are too bulky. My button through one doesn't keep coming undone and doesn't make me feel like a sack tied up in the middle.

@MissMarplesNiece That’s a good point about the tie belts. Button through ones sound like a better alternative.

In the context of OP and the website she is linking to, they are the same thing.

Plenty of people use these terms interchangeably, whatever the original meaning was. Language changes.

Feebeela · 11/12/2024 14:59

Oh you beauties! I am convinced that Piglet in Bed heard on the grapevine that Mumsnetters were debating the semantics of the word housecoat and decided to discount my dream housecoat/dressing gown/jedi robe! I've just bought it so I can waft around pretending to be a 'Swedish Architect' over Christmas. 😁

I will NOT be doing 'household' jobs in it, though!

These are my personal definitions:

Towelling/bathrobe - usually belted, made from absorbent fabric like cotton or linen, worn straight after a bath or shower to help dry off.

Dressing gown - may be belted, zipped or buttoned, of cotton, fleece, chenille or similar "fluffy" fabric. Worn over pyjamas or nightdress etc. for warmth.

Housecoat - usually buttoned or zipped, in quilted nylon fabric, worn over day clothes, to protect them when cleaning.

IMO none of the above can be considered "stylish". I speak as someone who has cotton terry towelling bathrobes for bathroom use, and chenille dressing gowns (belted) for cosying up in the evening. They are purely practical items.

LoafofSellotape · 10/12/2024 00:36

What makes it a housecoat rather than dressing gown?

I feel like a housecoat is meant to be worn over clothes. A dressing gown is something you wear out of the shower. Not polyester though towelling for absorbency.

I used to have a magnificent housecoat, it was vintage thing, bloke sized but I’m tall, made of wool and lined with silk. Possibly a posh smoking jacket for someone who felt the cold? Loved it I was gutted when it got chewed by moths.

Show me the buttoned dressing/coat/house/gowns please @MissMarplesNiece !

I would love one of those.

@AnnieMac89 Apparently the next door cats have bought me something from Happy Cabbage for Christmas... I might have been wanting it without realising!

I'm having flash backs to when I lived in a commune in the 70s as a child and all the men used to wear these monstrosities- long shaggy hair, flip flops and rolling a joint. I hope I'm putting you off OP 😂

I rather like those. Mind, I didn't live in a 70s commune - though student accommodation could be similar!
