Stylish Quilted Housecoat

Feebeela · 09/12/2024 07:38

Hello,
I've gone and fallen in love with the Piglet in Bed quilted housecoat but it's £200! Does anyone have any alternative recommendations for a good quality, plain (no pattern), quilted but stylish housecoat? I remember laughing with my cousins at my lovely nanna's quilted housecoat but now I see why she wore one!

Thanks All!

HOW much??!! That's nonsense money for a cotton dressing gown!

This is the 'housecoat' in question. I could see myself drinking coffee and reading the papers in this on a Sunday but would prefer not to spend £200!! Anyone got any cheaper ideas? TIA

I’d look too much like the chocolate liquorice allsort if I wore that.

Housecoat makes me think of the sort of thing my granny used to wear over her clothes to do her "household jobs" in the morning. It was a sort of short sleeved, button through nylon coat in blue and white check.

My Granny had one of those she called her housecoat. Happy memories.

Feebeela · 10/12/2024 17:16

I am cracking up with the replies here! Obviously housecoat is a loaded word and I did not realise. I love the idea that I'd look like a jedi if I did buy the Piglet in Bed housecoat which has deffo made me think twice in a household of SW fans. Some other options to ponder - thank you Mumsnet. Will take a look and consider my dressing gown future!

Stylish, quilted housecoat/ dressing gown is surely an oxymoron.

A quick google of padded kimono came up with this on Etsy:

I'm having flash backs to when I lived in a commune in the 70s as a child and all the men used to wear these monstrosities- long shaggy hair, flip flops and rolling a joint. I hope I'm putting you off OP 😂

Coalplay · 10/12/2024 19:33

Lol
The best dressing gown I ever had was when Boden did them and it was a really nice fine wool knitted wrap. Still got it and hope that they one day do them. Really dislike the bulky ones.

Why don't you get a nice thick towelling one? (NOT fleece or polyester). They are warm, comfortable and very practical, chuck them in the washing machine every so many weeks.

Those quilted things look stiff and so uncomfy.

You can't do anything wearing those. Can't even wash your hands properly due to the cuffs.
OP says she wants to feed the cats.

I gave up on my quest for one. Either too thick and hot as from JL, or thinner but remind me too much of shopping in one wearing a full face of make up. I settled for the Joe Browns Dragon one, but warm it isn't.

I don't get the housecoat either, but OP does. That Piglet in Bed one £200 could be made for £30. Doesn't even need facing, use binding.

PiggyPigalle · 10/12/2024 19:40

Sorry, you said towelling. I was thinking fleece. Please ignore me.

mdinbc · 10/12/2024 19:44

someone beat me to it... I saw some on Happy Cabbage.

Funny we will say robe or housecoat here in Canada, but never dressing gown.
I used to call it that when I was a child, but my mum was from Jersiey, so British terms used then.

I've got one of those. Not quilted, just blue check nylon, very hot. I wear it when cooking a lot of food, in addition to a hair net to keep everything clean and hair free.
I only do up the top button so I can answer the door sans overall and hairnet.

These are nice!

Gatecrashermum · 10/12/2024 20:31

It looks like a version of a Japanese padded hanten

Try searching using that name - you might get some more interesting and cheaper results

Here's an example on etsy

I feel like I'm in an alternative universe,it's hideous, I can't believe the love for it, I can't imagine it looking nice on anyone unless they're on the set of Star Wars.😉

I am with you .I am of an age where a fluffy high heeled mule was a slipper /house shoe .Housecoats and dressing gowns were for wafting about being fabulous .

These things are hideous .

I still crack out my high heeled mules when the occasion arises -although these days I have to sit down being fabulous in case I trip /break a bone .
On a positive note ,means that OH has to do all the fetching and carrying of drinks and snacks Smile

But that’s a bath robe a house coat is something you can open the door in, something you can wear outside to put bins out in, something smart enough for a zoom call.

I make them but sharing them would be totally outing .

Nearlyadoctor · 10/12/2024 20:43

PIB one now on sale at £149

I thought a house coat was one of those things Hilda Ogden wore to cilantro the Rovers Return.

That's a tabard, not a housecoat

ChristmasFox · 10/12/2024 21:49

I like it but you’re probably due at least another 5 people who think they’re being original carping about the housecoat term,

EconomyClassRockstar · 10/12/2024 22:29

Piglet in Bed have heard you! It's in the sale now.

Topsyturvy78 · 10/12/2024 22:38

There's no such thing as a stylish house coat. Awful memories of the nylon one I had in the 80's.🤣🤣🤣 What's up with a onsie? That's what I usually wear over my PJ's around the house. Prefer them to Ooodies.

RollerSkateLikePeggy · 10/12/2024 22:43

It's got a pattern, but I'm currently coveting one of these: pinklemons.boutique/products/quilted-dressing-gown
