Short Dress Issue! 😭😭

Got a beautiful dress for my Christmas Work Meal but it's just ever so slightly too short and keeps riding up. I'm wearing some black denier tights underneath, the opaque looking ones.

Has anyone ever worn cycling shorts underneath tights so if it was to ride up, nothing would be seen or on show? I know it sound stupid but I have 2 days until the meal and I don't get paid until the day before so trying to think of free options!

Ps, tell me if I'm being ridiculous, I won't be offended 👍

@anon1411 If it rides up now against your tights, when are sober, standing straight and conscious of how the dress looks now. Imagine it, a few hugs in, a few glasses of wine, toilet breaks etc. It's not going to magically stop. Sorry you did ask of your idea was ridiculous .

People won't think 'Oh, she's wearing cycling shorts, that's OK then', they'll just think you're wearing massive knickers or some kind of shapewear.

BeensOnToost · 03/12/2024 23:38

Are you handy with sewing? Add a little lace?

Talulahalula · 03/12/2024 23:39

Is it lined? I have got a skirt which rides up because it doesn’t have lining. Can you wear a long vest or something underneath it?

caffelattetogo · 03/12/2024 23:59

Would leggings work underneath? Or jeans and have it as a long top?

Peasnbeans · 04/12/2024 00:01

Yes, definitely wear the shorts over the tights. Noone will see or care.

anon1411 · 04/12/2024 07:16

Thanks guys!

I don't plan on drinking, its just a meal so I will be aware of my dress and if it's riding up or not. (Hopefully 😬)

Very true didn't think that people might think they're big knickers 🤣

No it's not lined, I do feel that the tights are the main reason why they rife because they're so shiny and silky, however don't want my legs out. Vest idea is a good idea 🥹

You can get snit static spray on Amazon which helps stop skirts riding up. Or I believe hair spray has a similar effect?

Chrysanthemum5 · 04/12/2024 07:24

Anti static!

MistletoeRegrets · 04/12/2024 07:37

You either need a proper slip under the dress - try M&S - to prevent it from riding up, or you need to add a wide strip of fabric to the hem of the dress to lengthen it. An adventurous person might try leather or fake fur, which could look wonderful.

Some dresses might look ok with an additional short tight black skirt beneath, that reaches the length you want - but it’s impossible to say without having seen the dress.

Presumably it’s not a dress with straps over the shoulders that you could lengthen?

Or would it be possible to have it altered at the waist to make the whole dress longer?

There are endless possible options - it just depends on the specific dress and your inclination to experiment.

Wear the dress as a tunic and wear leggings underneath

JustAFear · 04/12/2024 07:52

Can you share a picture of the dress? As has been said, there are lots of options but depends entirely on the shape and fabric of the dress.

EntropyCentral · 04/12/2024 08:10

I was told you should only wear clothes that you are entirely comfortable in. Having to think about constantly adjusting your clothes affects your whole demeanour and it shows. In this case I'd probably plump for leggings which makes a too short dress perfectly decent and you can relax without pulling constantly at your hemline.

Harrumphhhh · 04/12/2024 08:28

You can get tight slips from M&S, kind of like wearing a mini skirt under the dress. That will hopefully mean it won’t ride up (will stop the static from tights) but if it does, people will only see the slip.

MistletoeRegrets · 04/12/2024 09:01

‘I was told’ - by myself - that I’d rather give up socialising for a decade than leave the house in leggings under a too short dress …

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 04/12/2024 09:04

I always wear shorts under a dress and they do prevent the dress from riding up a lot as well as providing extra security against flashing. Oh and in winter they keep your bum warm 😂.

MySweetGeorgina · 04/12/2024 09:06

Just wear something else

nobody cares what you wear, in a nice way, maybe borrow something from a friend?

If a short dress rides up it is usually because it is slightly too tight and it “sits” instead of “hangs” so you will be be tugging it down all the time and not be relaxed at all
