I can't do jeans anymore!

I'm 55, a size 10/12 pear shape depending on the shop and have always loved wearing jeans, a skinny or straight leg.

Since going into the menopause, I've put on weight around my middle so wearing jeans is now really uncomfortable.

I haven't tried going up to size 14 yet!

What other style of trousers are out there that won't make me look huge?

You could always try jeggings?
(if you can deal with the collective scorn of stylish MNers!)😂

You are not " huge" at a size 10/12.

I remember getting towards the end of menopause and suddenly starting to feel so trapped in my fitted clothes. I hadn't gained weight or changed shape, just suddenly couldn't stand feeling bound up! I now wear loads of loose dresses, and baggy trousers. It took me a while to find what I felt comfortable in, so I wouldn't feel able to make specific recommendations for you, but fwiw, when I'm trying something an item has to pass two tests before I even look in the mirror. The first is whether I like the look of the item, the feel of the fabric, etc., the second is how it feels on. If it passes those two then I'll have a look in the mirror. Good luck!

I am a 12 and was giving up on my jeans because of the menobelly. But I have bought 2 pairs of Levis Rib cage and they are very comfy. Expensive but worth it.

I have not worn jeans for many years and am super sensitive to anything digging in my waist, also can't stand the restrictive material. I recently found Beyond Nine with their stretchy waist bands and have not looked back.

Lentilweaver · 03/12/2024 10:06

Uniqlo has a lot of stretchy baggy trousers.

Thanks all for your helpful suggestions. I will go forth and explore.

@dudsville Yes, exactly that feeling. Such a relief to get them off!!

I haven't worn jeans for years, hate the feeling of denim around my legs, skirts are fine though. I live in jersey trousers.

OnlyFrench · 03/12/2024 15:41

I feel your pain.... I've wondered about maternity jeans it's got so bad!

Uniqlo and M&S jeggings are remarkably comfortable and I've found M&S wide and straight leg cords much softer. They also do some very cheap jersey stretch wide legs which are my travelling trousers.

Finally, just bought a pair of grey pin striped drawstring waist smart trousers from Zara.....

I would love to not wear jeans anymore, but I'm not sure which style of skirts to wear in winter, I feel the cold so my satin slip skirts are worn in summer only, I only wear skinnies or straight jeans, so anything wide and baggie I feel makes me look big, I only wear a size 10 to 12 so not big but petite 5ft 3, I have a leather short skirt to wear with tights, but don't feel comfortable wearing it just around the house, thats what I need at home comfortable clothes but not leggings as I like to cover the bum and that means long shirts or jumpers. Are dresses warm enough.

When I had an operation that left me with a similar issue, I found the following helpful: button extenders (make waist a bit bigger without going up a size anywhere else), softer/stretchy jeans like M&S supersoft (look like regular denim but much more comfy), some maternity jeans also work fine.

I’m 37 and a size 12. I’ve put on a little weight since having children but nothing drastic.
I stopped wearing jeans after having my first. I found them suddenly very uncomfortable after living in them for about 15 years previously.

MonkeyTennis34 · 31/12/2024 20:06

Jeans update!
I bought a pair of M and S straight legged indigo Magic jeans, £45.

They are brilliant...comfortable and slimming. I've found my holy grail!
