What precise outfit would you wear for a low-key night out with new work friends? To a nice bar / pub , local, not clubbing or super posh or anything. On the side of very casual but elevated from my school run look!

Age 43, first time out in ages since DC basically. Trying to avoid the whole "jeans and a nice top" / 'clearly haven't been out since I was child-free' vibe!

It's going to be cold.

Actual current outfit ideas / accessories would be welcome!

I think jeans and a nice top can be brought up to date. Just need the right jeans, eg wide/mom/cropped and a neat/minimalist top, or a slightly oversized shirt. With some jewellery to elevate. Trainers fine.

DreadPirateRobots · 29/11/2024 12:33

Ye olde jeans and a nice top. In my case, probably the black lace shirt I bought on Vinted and my exaggerated barrel leg jeans from Cos with the pointed strappy Ganni dupe pumps from M&S.

Polyp0 · 29/11/2024 12:35

Barrel leg jeans from Anthropologie and frilly pink blouse from Me&Em. Didn't realise I was such a cliche 😂

mynameiscalypso · 29/11/2024 12:35

I'd be wearing faux leather trousers (of whatever style you like) and some kind of top in a contrasting material.

Apfelkuchen · 29/11/2024 12:38

Wide leg/barrel leg jeans, jumper or blouse/shirt and trainers, with some earrings from Oliver Bonas

If you want to be really contemporary, the New Romantics are back in and it's about maximalism top-wise - lace and ruffles a-go-go. Footwear silhouette is slim and neat - ballet or pointed pumps or sock boots, or classic Chuck Taylors tick the boxes.

Cords and a nice top.

My ‘very casual’ is probably more flouncy than some people’s …

At the moment, day or night, I’m wearing to death a brown Shetland jumper from La Fetiche - bought a few years ago and only now truly coming into its own paired with a translucent printed midi skirt from Zara that brings out the beautiful colours of the jumper’s yoke.

Outside during the day under a brown tweed coat. Inside under a huge cable knit cardigan from Marni in a complementary colour. (Old-ish).

Three choices of polishable brown footwear - knee high flat boots or lace up ankle boots or t bar flat shoes - depending on what feels right. With mustardy green wool Margaret Howell socks if they’re going to show.

From Dec 1 I’ll be swapping the translucent skirt for a dark, sequinned skirt also from Zara. (I sized up and it’s very long, may have it shortened in the new year if I still want to wear it occasionally.)

All invariably worn with a new and ridiculously extravagant brown wool beanie, and tiny emerald earrings and an enamel Hermes bangle, both ancient old.

I have other clothes … But this outfit seems to be all I want to wear right now.

(Should have said - I’m considerably older than you, @coffeepulease …)

Thanks! Counter to some of the suggestions (which sound lovely btw) - how would it be if I wore a sweater with a slip skirt? Or is that out now? The reason being that I really don't suit ruffles, blouses or any fuss near my face, plus the place in question will be COLD! Weather tomorrow expected to be near freezing and the place isn't warm.

I have nice simple earrings from Cos I could wear with? Footwear probably no-one's going to see but have flats, Mary Jane's or chunky boots.

Jumper and slip skirt works. In that case, I would pair with chunky boots (it's about contrast; voluminous casual jeans with neat feminine footwear, or silky feminine slip skirt with chunky masculine boots).

coffeepulease · 29/11/2024 14:37

Or I have a knit dress but it's not the longer length that's very in

Ahem … Grin

(The only thing I’d add regarding our shared outfit is that it helps if the items each have some individual personality rather than just being generic beige insta-wardrobe.)

lindyloo57 · 29/11/2024 16:22

@GodRestYouMerryGentlewench your outfits sounds lovely, any chance of a photo, I would love to get into midi skirts more, and stop wearing jeans so much .

GodRestYouMerryGentlewench · 29/11/2024 16:45

Here are all of Zara’s skirts:

https://www.zara.com/uk/en/woman-skirts-l1299.html?v1=2420454&page=2

For some reason, despite a general vast discrepancy between quality of styling and quality of products, I do find that amidst all the dross they have some surprisingly excellent skirts. They hit just the right note - an element of devil may care playfulness and interesting up to the minute design, but still cheap enough to be worn purely for the fun of it. And so easy to wear. I recall wandering into my local Zara branch just days before the first lockdown and buying a silvery pleated skirt on sale for £5.99. Last minute, for a concert - in the end I wore it endlessly, day and night for about three years, until it was an actual rag.

ElizabethVonArnim · 29/11/2024 20:38

I always hate everything I own and wear but I have a friend who always looks nice when we go out. Last time, she wore all black - pleather miniskirt with opaque tights and chunky flat black boots, slim fitting black jumper and quite a lot of lipstick and a bangle. It looked casual but going-out-ish and she wasn't cold.

boygirlcatdog · 29/11/2024 21:21

I would wear this outfit pretty much. I have the exact blouse and would wear with jeans and either loafers or ankle boots. Pavements can be icy atm! And a massive coat 😂

boygirlcatdog · 29/11/2024 21:22

So in summary... jeans and a nice top!

Edited

What's the jumper like?
I'd wear this but definitely with boots like DMs or something and hair curled/brushed out, and a darker wintery makeup.

@GodRestYouMerryGentlewench I think I want to be you! Sounds amazing 😍
