Preowned 'never worn' or 'worn once'. Really????

Am I cynical that when I see something on Vestiaire or Vinted etc and it's described as 'only worn once' or 'never worn' then it's a big fat porky pie?

How often are things really worn once before someone decides to get rid of it? ONCE??? Not 4 times? Not half a season? Just the once?

It immediately makes me not want to buy the thing

I have an absolutely terrible habit of not returning things if I decide I don’t like it or it doesn’t fit. So in my case, “never worn” would be quite accurate.

There may be other chronic procrastinators like me out there!

I think some people will buy an outfit for a special occasion only and then sell it, because they don't want to be seen in the same outfit twice; or they think by the time the next occasion comes along it will be out of fashion; or possibly they found the outfit uncomfortable in some way on the day, e.g. constantly having to adjust neckline.

DrZaraCarmichael · 27/11/2024 07:52

Well I don't know about Vinted, but I volunteer in a charity shop and often see things which are either BNWT or brand new. There are some giveaways like the spare button still attached in the little plastic bag, or the little bit of plastic used to attach the tag still in the label, but the tag torn off.

Lots of people buy a shit load of clothes they never get round to wearing. This is especially the case I've found with party/special occasion clothes, very often worn once and donated. Or things people have bought in the sales at the end of a season and by the time it gets round to next summer/winter they don't want them any more.

The problem with vinted though is that you can't inspect the item carefully beofre buying.

FlaskOfRevenge · 27/11/2024 07:53

My sister wore a party dress once, it was beautiful and beaded and by the end of the night the inner tops of her arms were chaffed red raw from dancing in it. She sold it and definitely only wore it that one time.

She has lots of events that involve the same people so tends to wear an outfit once and sells it on, better that than it sitting in her wardrobe unworn.

GrimDamnFanjo · 27/11/2024 07:53

I got stung with a badly worn leather bag described as new! I was fuming.

ZippyLilacStork · 27/11/2024 07:55

A posh party dress, I believe it, lots of people only go out occasionally and don’t want to wear the same thing twice.
Day to day clothing, I’m not convinced but I suppose you might by something not like it as much as you thought you did or miss the return window

Octavia64 · 27/11/2024 07:57

Posh party dress definitely believe it.

My ExH when we got divorced and went through our stuff had so so many clothes he'd bought and never even unwrapped.

BilboBlaggin · 27/11/2024 07:57

My husband had a buying habit. Always purchasing new clothes, more than he ever needed. He died this summer and the stuff I found in his wardrobe...many items with tags still attached, some he only wore once. It's criminal how much money he wasted, but I've been honest on Vinted and said "only worn once" when I know it to be true and the item even looks unworn. I dare say some people are fibbing, but there are many reasons why someone might sell after one wear.

PeonyBlush10 · 27/11/2024 08:00

I’m always telling the truth when I list an item of clothing for sale with the description new, unworn or worn twice etc - I’ve made quite a
few mistakes over the years buying clothes that have sat unworn in my wardrobe. I’m also very honest with descriptions of faults etc. It doesn’t pay to be dishonest. I’ve sold many items and never had an issue with customer dissatisfaction or returns. It’s much more stress free to be
honest.

itsbiblical · 27/11/2024 08:01

It is totally possible for things to be used once.

I've bought shoes that were ok being tried on, but once I wore them for a night out realised they were too high/uncomfortable/too tight.

Stuff I've bought in a sale thinking I'd wear it but didn't. Things I've bought for a wedding or holiday so wore once but wouldn't wear again. Things I've bought thinking I'd lose a bit of weight but didn't 😂

stanleypops66 · 27/11/2024 08:03

I'm awful for ordering things and then not wearing them but I've got better lately with easier returns.

mitogoshigg · 27/11/2024 08:04

Party outfits I'd believe, I've bought dresses and worn once

walltowallkents · 27/11/2024 08:08

I am ashamed to say half my wardrobe is stuff I’ve never worn or only worn once.

I sell stuff on Vinted listed as such and have never had any issues because it’s clear when it arrives that it’s in perfect condition. I have however received stuff from Vinted that’s been “worn once” and it’s covered in fake tan and stinks to high heaven, so I think it just depends on the seller.

BlackSwan · 27/11/2024 08:10

Some people lie through their teeth. I only buy things with tags on now.

Ellie1015 · 27/11/2024 08:10

My teens constantly want something then hardly wear it. Very frustrating.

Snorlaxo · 27/11/2024 08:13

There will be people telling porky pies but there will be others who missed the returns date, gained or lost weight so can’t wear a novelty item like a party dress or Christmas jumper or live like a celebrity and don’t want to be caught in the same item twice.

charlieinthehaystack · 27/11/2024 08:13

both times i bought outfits for my daughters weddings well over £100 including handbag jewellery shoes etc but when i sold i split it all up as I found not many people wanted a whole ensemble. there was no point in me keeping it as it was not something i would really wear again as if i went to someone elses wedding it would just be a 'normal' dress i could reuse. the 2nd outfit i had 3 the same tops but each in different sizes as it took three tries to find one that was comfortable and the skirt two different sizes same reason. though it was high end designer the sizes were very skimpy. i found selling each of those individually better so people could get something that fits, in two pieces i always need odd sizes but dont often get a choice. it all sold quickly including the hats but in the end I kept the necklace. i chose good condition rather than vgc even though they were to cover myself really as you always get one who decides a problem though they were immaculate only the shoes had sole wear but i did clean them and it was an inside do.

WalterdelaMare · 27/11/2024 08:16

I just sold a dress on Vinted that I wore once. To a wedding. I’ll never wear it again. I’m about to put another up that’s at least 3 years old and I’ve never worn and it still has the tags on. It’s been sitting in its box from Hush all this time.

RLmadmum · 27/11/2024 08:16

My wardrobe is genuinely full of dresses that have only been worn once 🙈

honeylulu · 27/11/2024 08:19

If it's a party dress or wedding outfit it may well only have been worn once, possibly twice or not at all (changed mind, didn't lose enough weight, event cancelled etc.) I've bought lots of second hand stuff like this and it really does look good as new.

I do it myself. Something like gym kit or jeans I'll wear over and over but a party dress only one or two wears, because then everyone has seen it, so I might as well try and recover some of the outlay.

Exactly. I have several garments I’ve tried on at home, gone ‘God, no’ and failed to return in time, so ‘never worn’ would be perfectly truthful.

TheDevilsTelephone · 27/11/2024 08:20

The main reason I've sold items in the past is precisely because I've realised that for whatever reason (didn't fit well, not comfy, decided didn't suit, preferred other things) I've only worn it once, then it's just sat collecting dust in the back of my wardrobe, so I sell it.

dhxxx · 27/11/2024 08:23

I've lots of things I bought in summer 2019 that I've only worn once due to covid weight gain/pregnancy 😂

DataPup · 27/11/2024 08:23

Yes, I'm about to list some jeans that have only been worn once. I tried them on and thought they were an ok fit but a bit looser than I'd have liked, after an hour of wearing them they'd loosened up so much that they were falling down.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 27/11/2024 08:24

"How often are things really worn once before someone decides to get rid of it?"

The only thing I can think of is a condom.
