Preowned 'never worn' or 'worn once'. Really????

Am I cynical that when I see something on Vestiaire or Vinted etc and it's described as 'only worn once' or 'never worn' then it's a big fat porky pie?

How often are things really worn once before someone decides to get rid of it? ONCE??? Not 4 times? Not half a season? Just the once?

It immediately makes me not want to buy the thing

I've bought several things over the years that I've worn once, realised I didn't love or didn't feel good in (or didn't have another occasion to wear it) and then it's just sat in my cupboard unloved. Sold eventually through Vinted.

TBH the things I've worn loads of times I either still really like and don't want to get rid of, or have worn so much that I don't think they'll get any money (so give to charity shop instead).

Also I recently bought a great pair of boots on Vinted which had been "worn once) but honestly looked straight out the box to me, I was so chuffed!

I was browsing Facebook marketplace and someone was selling a couple of body warmers. One was listed as good, worn a few times and the picture was it laid on the bed. (Fair enough, no issue there) but The other was listed as new without tags, never worn, the picture was someone topless wearing it. They were different colours so I’m hoping they just got the colours the wrong way round, as I was like okay… weird 😂

I've recently listed some never worn clothes and shoes. It's genuine. I bought the shoes about 15 years ago because I fell in love with them. I soon after changed jobs, lifestyle and I never really had an event to wear them too. 15 years later I've finally accepted that as much as I love them they really aren't ever going to be worn anywhere. Similar story with clothes. Might as well see if someone will want them.

Normallynumb · 27/11/2024 15:01

I've never had a problem with any purchases and I will buy used very good tops in my favourite brand as the label design has changed and I can tell the age.
I've just this morning bought a pair of Sketchers for £8 which genuinely look as if they've been tried on once and didn't fit.

sosad24 · 27/11/2024 15:11

Every now and then, I decide to be brave and buy a colour or style that's not the norm for me. It often ends me with wearing it once,or not at all, to understand that it is still not for me.

It happens way too often!

But often it's not a special occasion garment. It's something incredibly classic. Like a blazer or classic winter coat. Why would anyone wear a classic winter coat once then think nah. I don't like it

There are a myriad of reasons why someone might sell something only worn once even if it is a classic timeless piece.

I bought a beautiful timeless S Max Mara coat in Selfridges sale. It was too big rather than oversized, something I had to admit to myself after wearing once. I dithered too long and missed the returns date. Sold it. I also had several beautiful sets of unworn lingerie that I hadn't got round to wearing. Unfortunately, I got breast cancer and had a double mastectomy without reconstruction. Items sold without issue.

On the other side, last week, purchased something that was listed as worn once. Again, a classic item - the softest pale grey cashmere sweater. Although it did regrettably smell of perfume, albeit v. lovely perfume, the item is immaculate (and unlike fabric conditioner, does not make my eyes water). More than happy to believe it had only been worn once.

Thankfully, have only been caught out by the odd thing listed as worn once when it clearly has not. Have always been able to get my money(and postage) back. Refund request always immediately accepted without complaint so I know they were chancers.

I have an absolutely terrible habit of not returning things if I decide I don’t like it or it doesn’t fit. So in my case, “never worn” would be quite accurate.

There may be other chronic procrastinators like me out there!

Same I can't be bothered to return items sometimes either to much hassle

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 27/11/2024 20:56

Those of you who don't return things are you all loaded or is the stuff really cheap?

I very rarely have to return things and it's always because I wasn't honest with myself about the sizing. I take it to the Post Office the next day.

I've never bought anything on Vinted. I hate the way the clothes mostly look as if they've been used to line a dog basket.

I'm sceptical about most of BNWT. Many arty/ upmarket brands tie the tags on with string, ribbon, or little safety pins. It's easy to unfasten and reattach.

My wardrobes are stuffed to the gunnels. I don't own a single item of clothing I don't love. The only things I don't wear are because they're too small but I live in hope

Yes.

ImTheOnlyUpsyOne · 27/11/2024 21:02

I have LOADS of clothes I've worn once or never worn because I'm waiting to loose weight...gain weight...come back into style. I hate getting rid of nice clothes. I'm sure DH would love me to put them all on vinted lol

Bakedpumpkin · 27/11/2024 21:13

I often only wear things once for a dinner / party - it’s bad but I always fancy something new.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 27/11/2024 21:13

I'm boggled by the only wear once/ never wear.

If it's day wear , I'll wear it there and then. Can't wait- what's the point of delaying? At the very worst, might have to wait for the weather to be appropriate.

If it's dressy up stuff, if I don't have an event I'll do my best to create one. I've never bought anything to wear only once. I've no problem about wearing formal/ dressy up stuff on several occasions.

I've got a black tie dinner on Friday. I bought the dress in 2017 for a very formal wedding. It was around £600. I've worn it loads- at least 3 years running to an industry black tie event.

I get so much enjoyment out of wearing my clothes.

Oceangreyscale · 27/11/2024 21:19

I've bought things, worn once and realised they aren't comfortable for me or don't fit as well as I thought, or they don't go with other things I have.
I'd be honest in the description otherwise I'll probably have to refund the buyer anyway.

I've sold quite a few things I've only worn once - shoes in particular as I have really awkward feet! I can't return them if they've been worn.
Similarly I've bought many nearly new things.

KirstenBlest · 27/11/2024 21:26

Worn once = looks newish unless you examine it. Probably been worn at least 10 times
Worn twice = worn quite a few times by someone very clumsy

Instant ick for me is Gorgeous/Stunning/Beautiful in the listing's title.

doublec · 27/11/2024 21:27

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle I do my best to return anything I know I'm not going to wear. Indeed, I know myself well enough to know that if I don't wear something within a fortnight of purchase, I will never wear it. So return it. Sometimes though, things don't work out like this. Maybe I have bought something in winter that I intend to wear in the summer, but by the time summer has come round, I've gone off it, it does fit right or something else. Obviously by this time, I cannot return. As a result, I try not to buy thing out of season.

Other times, even the best intentions go awry. I decided to sell some unworn lingerie due to not needing it any more after a double mastectomy. I also sold some other new items of clothing that i knew wouldn't hang properly once I was flat. An expensive coat that i know I should have returned immediately due to its size - it was too big - but was just too beautiful to return. I kept hoping I'd feel differently and tried to wear the coat many times. It never felt right. The good news is I sold it for what i paid for it and the coat went to a great home and was worn, rather than languishing in my wardrobe.

And yes, some is stolen. But much isn't. You also have to take into consideration that a lot of women/girls on these platforms are influencers, sex workers including high class companions, cam girls etc etc. The one thing they all have in common is they get given stuff. Many sell on without wearing it. Others have shopping addictions. Some like to wear things just once or are simply too lazy to take items back.

eeeeeeeee · 27/11/2024 21:31

I don’t really sell anything on, so when I buy clothes I don’t do so with the view of reselling anything.

I’m in my 20s and I have some clothes that are new with tags on, dresses I haven’t worn that would look appropriate at a wedding or graduation - things that I couldn’t wear on a day to day basis. Then fashion trends changed, I gained weight…so I’m left with some items in my wardrobe that I never wear and that are new with tags yet old season.

I also went through a habit of buying a lot of clothes so my wardrobe could do with a clear out. I did sell some clothes years ago online, but now I pretty much just can’t be bothered. There’s clothes I have that I have been meaning to return but didn’t do so in time etc. Things I have bought last minute and worn once and decided it isn’t flattering.

So although I don’t sell anything online, I can totally see how this may occur.

SparrowFeet · 27/11/2024 21:45

I've seen so many things on Vinted 'BNWOT' where they have literally stuck the photo of them wearing the item at a wedding on the reel.
I take it now on Vinted that if it's brand new without tags that it usually means worn once. Very good could mean anything

HerRoyalNotness · 28/11/2024 00:07

I have so many things I’ve bought in the past that I’ve not worn or only 1-2 times. Not on purpose, not sure why I do it. I had a pair of ted baker trousers with a matching blouse I bought for a wedding event (next day lunch) 11 years ago. We didn’t go to the lunch in the end so it’s never been worn. I just put it in a box for goodwill this week. 😞

downwindofyou · 28/11/2024 15:08

I've seen on Vestiaire that some sellers have dozens of a type of thing. Like dozens of BNWT cashmere Burberry scarves for example.

They are fakes surely. Why would one seller have 150 items all BNWT Burberry and Fendi cashmere scarves? Al photographed the same way

I buy things and only wear them once if they were for a specific event like a wedding or something and then I would sell it. I also buy things and forget to return and then I never wore them.

Pinkruler · 28/11/2024 16:56

If its a dressy event I often wear the dress once or twice then sell it on.

Basically I don't go out to those events much at all (once every few years) so if I keep things like that they go out of fashion.

And am guilty of buying things and persuading self that I fit them, when they are in fact a bit tight.

Yes.

Yes I often wonder how much stuff sold on Vinted is stolen.
