Hair dryer help please. Air wrap? Shark?

I know nothing about hairdryers other than a twenty quid one from Amazon is perfect for my short straight hair and for the dog when he’s been out in the rain!
Dd (23) has naturally curly hair which she has started to embrace! After years of just drying it straight and it always having a bit of curl (and lots on a wet day) she now plaits it after washing and lets it dry naturally. However sometimes there’s no time for this. I’d like to treat her to a more appropriate dryer for her hair type but I’m lost.
Do I need an air wrap? Or is a cheaper equivalent ok? There’s a shark on Amazon Black Friday deals at 229 pounds called Flex style 5 in 1 styler and hair dryer. Has anyone tried this. Air wraps are a bit expensive but I’d rather not waste money on a cheaper alternative if they are no good.
Thank you

Sorry probably should also have said that her hair is fairly long (halfway down back) and is also quite fine.

I tried the GHD hairdryer at Champneys last month and I was amazed by how good it was. I have fine strands of hair that's thick and wavy and it did lovely things to my hair (and dried it so quickly). Following with interest for other suggestions, but that's my Black Friday pick.

@JaneandtheLaundry thanks I will have a look

I've been coveting the Curlsmith hairdryer which has 40% for Black Friday. I can't justify it as mine is only a year old, but it'd be my choice for curly hair

I was just going to say you need a dryer with a diffuser- then I looked at the boots website and this curlsmith dryer (I have no experience of this dryer btw) has the biggest, most impressive diffuser I have seen lol. I personally don't rate the dyson dryer or its dupes and also don't see my hairdressers clamouring to buy it either (I take that to mean something lol). I usually spend around 60 on a dryer and they're all similar- same size, same power, same settings and attachments. For a curly girl haircare method though, the diffuser is key. An airwrap is a totally different thing, imo, kind of like buying false eyelashes for someone with amazing lashes

Don't get a Dyson whatever you do, such a waste of money.

I know nothing about curly hair but I know every hairdresser I've ever had has Parlux hairdryers.

Stumpedasatree · 25/11/2024 09:59

I have a Parlux with a diffuser attachment which is fantastic for curls.

Ooof well horses for courses - I love my Dyson but I'm lazy and it's really easy to use and gives my fine crap hair quick volume. It's lasted 6 years so far.

Agree, my daughter got one as a gift, the curls don’t last and it’s really tricky to use, she finally got an appointment in the ‘salon’ at Oxford street where they show you how to use it, spent 50 quid on some Dyson restyling cream the hairdresser convinced her was necessary and would make all the difference.

Still doesn’t hold curls and still a pain to use.

canyouletthedogoutplease · 25/11/2024 10:13

Something with a big diffuser bowl and option of cooler temperature would be my shout.

Futurethinking2026 · 25/11/2024 10:18

Disclaimer - I don't have curly hair but I have the shark 5 in 1 and love it so much. Dry's my hair so well! It comes with a diffuser which is what you will need.

Hope2025 · 25/11/2024 10:19

You need a Parlux with a diffuser. She’ll be over the moon!

nicky2512 · 25/11/2024 13:36

Thank you all so much. I’m still not 100% decided on which to buy but basically I’m taking from these reviews that a diffuser is the most important thing.
The flexstyle doesn’t have a diffuser with it but the much cheaper speed style does. I still think she’d love the look of the shark or Dyson but I’m going to have a good look at the other recommendations.
I really appreciate the help.

Actually just realised five in one should have a diffuser but I can’t see it mentioned at all. Sorry I can’t do links but this is the one I was looking at.

I would get the speed style over flexstyle (I have both), the speed style dries my hair much faster and the only thing it doesn't have it the curling wands which I assume she wouldn't want / use with curly hair.

If you are stuck on FlexStlye, you can choose your own five accessories here:

Or the brand new folding speedstyle for cheaper (mine is the older non folding one).
