Christmas jumper for MIL

charltonred · 23/11/2024 18:57

MIL has asked for a knitted winter jumper as her Christmas present, husband usually sorts present but he really has no clue so he’s asked me to help. Tbh I’m struggling too, I have no idea where she shops and she also said she was a size 14 so I’m not really sure what style would suit either. It’s the first Christmas we’ve spent with them so will be there when she opens it on Christmas morning so I want it to be nice and something she likes, scared of picking something that won’t look nice.

Can anyone recommend anything they may have seen lately that could fit the bill?

Sainsbury's and Tesco both have lovely Christmas jumpers in

Woolovers?

Doggymummar · 23/11/2024 19:01

You need to snoop in her wardrobe and see where she shops. Otherwise it will be wrong and you will never recover.

Mygreyhair · 23/11/2024 19:02

Not sure of your budget but these are really good value for cashmere. And at least with M&S you know you’ll be able to swap it.

Surely you can guess the types of place she shops based on her look/lifestyle…

give us some clues about her and we might be able to help.

BashfulClam · 23/11/2024 19:04

Peacocks had some beautiful ones. They have online presence as well as shops.

MrsWhites · 23/11/2024 19:04

In this sort of situation I always go with the fail safe M&S. Get a gift receipt and make it clear that you won’t be offended if she wishes to exchange it.

TomaytoTomaato · 23/11/2024 19:08

Quite pricey, but I saw this the other day and thought it was lovely...

I'm tempted by loads of them. Must resist.

I got one last year and it’s gorgeous.

I definitely can’t snoop in her wardrobe.
I know I should probably know more about her but she’s lived abroad for 10 years since I met my husband and I’ve really not spent much time with her. I think that’s why I’m so nervous buying a bloody jumper for her.

I’ll try give some more info , I’d say not particularly stylish (I’m really trying to word this so it doesn’t sound unkind). But I’d say maybe typical middle aged, a bit frumpy. I wouldn’t say she has a ‘style’ as such, she doesn’t wear make up and I’ve never seen her dressed up. Very casual maybe is her style? Jeans, walking shoes long sleeve t shirt style tops.

M&S is a good shout I’ll have a look there, supermarket and peacocks probably a bit cheaper than we’d usually spend I’d say maybe £50-75 is the budget.

That sounds a bit of a worrying start to a MIL relationship tbh. Is there any way that your DH can ask for hints? The guessing around about how to please your MIL is really not a good trend to encourage.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 23/11/2024 19:21

Do you want a Christmas jumper (reindeer, snowflakes, ice skating meercats) or a wearable year round jumper to give her for Christmas?

PorkPieForStarters · 23/11/2024 19:25

@GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut I had the same question, does she want a Christmas-themed jumper or a nice, warm jumper she can wear in winter?

LadyLapsang · 23/11/2024 19:34

John Lewis Donegal wool blend roll neck jumper in Barrow 65.00 - fits true to size
TK Maxx has some Chinti & Parker jumpers in at the moment
House of Bruar, some 2 ply cashmere half price
Brora - expensive but lovely
Massimo Dutti - wash really well
White Company
otherwise M & S

Wetcappuccino · 23/11/2024 20:37

White Stuff have 25% off fairisle knits at the moment.

Are you sure she wants a "Christmas jumper"?
I know that on MN every present, no matter how inappropriate or unwanted is supposed to be gratefully received but my poker face wouldn't kick in if I unwrapped that.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 23/11/2024 20:59

If it's a jumper as a Christmas present rather than a novelty Christmas jumper, then there's not a single item here I wouldn't be delighted to receive.

They're slightly over your budget but none of them are "typical middle aged, a bit frumpy" but I assume you're not actively looking for something to fit that remit?

charltonred · 23/11/2024 21:07

Sorry for confusion , she wants a jumper for Christmas NOT a novelty Christmas jumper.

Thanks @LadyLapsang that's really helpful.

No not looking for something frumpy and middle aged however I just meant by that I don’t want to be buying a skimpy, slim fitting, cropped or likewise style as that’s not something that she would wear. I’m trying to think of what would be flattering to her shape really and having not shopped for anything like this before I’m a bit stumped but will heed the advice and do some more digging and look at all the suggestions

Size 14 should mean she can wear most styles reasonably well.

If you are not sure of the look, I’d go for feel and get cashmere so the texture is the “ feature”. There’s a lot of more affordable cashmere about these days. Personally I’d steer clear of pattern or embellishments.
